Arteta decision had Martin Keown ‘screaming at the TV’ in Arsenal defeat to PSV Eindhoven

Martin Keown says a tactical decision by Mikel Arteta and his couching staff in Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat to PSV Eindhoven had him ‘screaming at the TV’.

The Gunners needed a single point to secure top spot in their group but goals from Joey Veerman and Luuk de Jong won the game for the Dutch side.

Arsenal were way short of their best in general but Keown picked out a particular moment as a great cause for frustration.

Kieran Tierney was tasked with marking big centre-forward Luuk de Jong, who outjumped the Arsenal full-back to double PSV’s lead.

Speaking about the corner, Keown told BT Sport: “For the second goal, Tierney picks up De Jong from the corner and straight away I’m screaming at the TV because he shouldn’t be the one marking him.

“Ramsdale comes, thinking he can cure the problem, but it’s a big haymaker from him. It’s one of those that needed a straight arm but it was wild from Ramsdale.

“Tierney doesn’t even get off the ground, I don’t know why he was marking him. If I’m Holding I would make myself available to help him but he didn’t do that either.”

Arsenal sit top of the Premier League and had won their opening four Group A games in the Europa League.

Speaking after the defeat, Arteta admitted his side did not reach the standard he demands from his players.

“I’m very disappointed,” he said. “It’s the end of a long run where we won a lot of games and we have to reset.

“Congratulations to PSV – they were the better team today. We were nowhere near our level and we know that in Europe it’s very difficult to win.

“We didn’t get any control. We didn’t get the ball in the areas we wanted. We gave so many balls away, which allowed so many transitions, which was what they were looking for whenever they got in the right structure.

“They were on top of a lot of things that last week was different.”

Foot injury rules Payne out of Ireland’s clash with Wallabies

THE IRFU HAS confirmed that Jared Payne will not be involved for Ireland against Australia on Saturday.

The 29-year-old has returned to Ulster to recover from the sprained foot he sustained in the 29-15 victory against South Africa.

Payne took part in a running session with Ireland’s medical staff yesterday evening, but his foot was “tender” immediately after. As a result, the decision has been made to rule the New Zealand native out of the clash with Michael Cheika’s Wallabies.

It is not expected that Payne will be sidelined for the long-term.

Having worn 13 against South Africa, Payne’s absence opens the door for Robbie Henshaw to move to the outside centre berth this weekend. Gordon D’Arcy, Stuart Olding and Ian Madigan are all viable options at 12 for head coach Joe Schmidt.

Versatile Ulster back Olding was put forward for media duty today by the IRFU, usually a hint of involvement, although that may come from the bench. Madigan was excellent at out-half against Georgia on Sunday, while D’Arcy offers tried and test defence in midfield.

Meanwhile, Mike McCarthy has returned to Leinster to undergo his return-to-play protocols after suffering concussion against Georgia, and has also been ruled out of involvement this weekend. That leaves Dave Foley almost certain to be part of Ireland’s replacements bench.

Rory Best came through training today and is available for selection against the Wallabies. Richardt Strauss was strong at hooker against Georgia, and against South Africa off the bench, while Sean Cronin started that clash with the Springboks.

Making a call in the number two shirt is a welcome selection dilemma for Ireland’s coaching, even if Best’s experience gives him a strong chance of returning.

“He trained today and trained well,” says Ireland forwards coach Simon Easterby.

“It’s a good place to be. Rory has proved his fitness today and took part in full training, which was great. It’s great to have a bit of quality and depth in that position.”
