Mayo Civic Center Region 1 Wrestling Hall of Fame 2014 Class

The Mayo Civic Center Region I Wrestling Hall of Fame inducted eight members on Monday during the Southeastern Minnesota Wrestling Seniors Banquet in Rochester, Minn.

2014 Mayo Civic Center Hall of Fame Honorees:

ATHLETES:

Dave Cummings, Le Roy High School
Dave won the 1970 MSHSL 154-pound one-class state high school wrestling championship. He was an NCAA All-American at Mankato State. Dave coached 13 years at Worthington High School where he directed his teams to seven Minnesota state dual meet tournament appearances – including 3rd, 4th, and 5th place team finishes in the large class. Dave has officiated 35 years at the high school and collegiate levels.

Pete Veldman, Albert Lea High School
Pete won the 1951 state high school wrestling championship for Albert Lea High School as a heavyweight. He placed 3rd and 4th in the Big 10 for the Minnesota Gophers. The Gophers won Big 10 Titles in 1957 an 1959. Pete was a long-time coach and athletic director at South St. Paul High School. He officiated 42 years at all levels including 5 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Pete also established the LeRoy Mass Scholarship fund at Albert Lea High School.

Ronald Jacobsen, Owatonna
Ron was a four-time high school state placewinner in the one-class system for Owatonna. He graduated in 1957. Ron is regarded by many as the most decorated wrestler in the school’s history. He won two NJCAA titles, was an Olympic team alternate in 1960, an All Marine Corps champion, national AAU runnerup, and earned Pan Am medals. Ron was a long-time coach at the University of New Mexico. He is a member of a number of halls of fame.

COACHES: The Hall will honor two long-time assistants.

Bill Frame, Pine Island
Bill has been a permanent fixture in the Pine Island wrestling program for close to 40 years. Bill wrestled for Pine Island for six years in the 1970s and has coached as a varsity assistant for the past 32 years. Bill also served the school district as head girls track coach.

Dave Frame, Albert Lea
Dave has been a valuable assistant and junior high and JV coach the past 30 years for hall of fame Coaches Neal Skarr and Larry Goodnature. Dave started the wrestling program at Mankato Bethany Junior College and coached wrestling in West Africa for a year as well. Dave is Bill Frame’s uncle.

OFFICIAL:

Jerry Reker, Kasson-Mantorville
A member of the SMSU and MWCA Halls of Fame, Jery has been an official the past 29 years at all levels. He has officiated 17 MSHSL State Tournaments. Jerry has been a mentor to many young officials and has conducted officiating clinics. He has served as an administrator for 31 years. Currently Jerry’s a Principal at Kasson-Mantorville. He has had outstanding coaching careers in Logan Iowa, Grand Meadow, and Wabasha-Kellogg.

CONTRIBUTOR:

Louie Ohly, Rochester Lourdes
Long-time Rochester Attorney Louie Ohly was the “heart and soul” of the Rochester Lourdes High School wrestling program. He was a key financial contributor for the wrestling program, and other athletic programs at Rochester Lourdes through1987. Son Jim was a state runnerup for Lourdes. Son John was an NJCAA All-American at Rochester Community Techinal College. He received an NCAA Division I scholarship to wrestle at Oregon State.

PIONEER COACH:

Gordon Paschka, Winona
The late Gordon Paschka was a head wrestling and head football coach at Winona High from 1952 to 1960. A former Big 10 All Conference Guard for The U of Minnesota, Gordon played on the 1940 and 1941 national championships teams at Minnesota. He led the way for Faribault native Bruce Smith to win The Heisman in 1941. Gordon also played in the NFL with the Eages and the Giants. He was drafted in the fourth round (28th overall) where he was converted to a fullback.
