Canada's Gender Pay Gap Means Male Execs Make Almost $1M More Than Women In Similar Jobs: Study

OTTAWA — A new report on the country’s highest-paid CEOs is adding evidence to the argument that women face a “double-pane glass ceiling” at the top of Canada’s corporate ladder — first in getting to the executive suite and, once there, earning as much as their male counterparts.

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives calculates that of the more than 1,200 named executive officers, or NEOs, at 249 publicly traded companies in Canada, women earn about 68 cents for every dollar made by their male counterparts.

The study says the gap closes to 86 cents when looking at the wages of women and men in senior manager roles, almost in line with the country’s overall pay gap of 87 cents based on Statistics Canada calculations.

The gap at the top means that, on average, men earn about $950,000 more annually than women in similar executive positions.

Watch: Here’s how long it will take to close the gender wage gap. Story continues below.

The author of the report says the findings, while focused on the executive level where pay is already high, point to a larger equity issue.

“This is certainly about executives — that’s what we’re looking at — but I think it’s reflective of what’s happening throughout corporate Canada and the difficulties that women face in getting a fair shake even if they do have the qualifications,” said David Macdonald, the centre’s senior economist.

The findings are attached to the left-leaning centre’s annual report on the salaries of Canada’s highest-paid CEOs, who are estimated to earn what an average worker makes in a year by the time lunch rolls around Wednesday.

A review of corporate filings of publicly traded companies shows the top CEOs earned an average of $10 million in 2017, the most recent year available, or about 197 times more than the average worker.

‘Old boys’ club’ relied on for executive searches

An earlier analysis by The Canadian Press, cited in the centre’s report, found a similar gap among the country’s top 60 publicly traded companies. The review of records for 312 NEOs showed only 25 women and they earned an average of 64 cents for every dollar earned by male counterparts.

Interviews with about a dozen executives revealed a range of reasons.

They told The Canadian Press about how companies rely on the “old boys’ club” for executive searches. They also spoke about how outdated — and unchallenged — corporate culture in some companies leave women out of top jobs or fail to provide workplace support. The executives also mentioned a lack of confidence and risk-taking among women, an issue highlighted in academic research on executive pay.

Macdonald’s report zeros in on three issues.

First, few women are CEOs — about four per cent of Canadian CEOs and 10 per cent of top executives are women — where pay is the highest.

Second, “performance pay” given to top executives — stock, stock options or cash rewards based on how a company performs — is predominantly higher for men than women. Eliminating bonus pay from the equation shrinks the gap to 82 cents, or almost the gap in the wider workforce.

Finally, companies that have more women in their executive ranks tend to be smaller organizations, and therefore pay less than their larger counterparts, Macdonald said.

Federal legislation passed in the spring created a “comply or explain” model for diversity on corporate boards, rather than setting quotas for the number of women, for instance. Macdonald’s report, citing a decade of data from Norway where quotas have increased the number of women on boards, suggests quotas aren’t the answer to closing the pay gap.

Luke Perry, Beverly Hills 90210 star, dies aged 52

Luke Perry, the actor who starred in the TV show "Beverly Hills 90210," has died at the age of 52.

In a statement confirming his death, his publicist said: "Luke passed away today after suffering a massive stroke."

He was surrounded by his family, including his children Jack and Sophie, in Los Angeles.

Born and raised in rural Fredericktown, Ohio, Mr Perry became a heartthrob on "Beverly Hills 90210," which ran from 1990 to 2000. He played Dylan McKay.

Mr Perry also had roles in a handful of films, including "The Fifth Element," "8 Seconds" and "American Strays."

He appeared in HBO’s prison drama "Oz" and voiced cartoons like "The Incredible Hulk" and "Mortal Kombat."

In more recent years, he starred in the series "Ties That Bind" and "Body of Proof."

Shannen Doherty, who played his love interest Brenda in "Beverly Hills 90210," sent a message of support to Perry following his stroke, sharing a picture of the two together on the show.

According to TMZ, paramedics responded to a call to his home in Sherman Oaks, California on Wednesday morning from where Mr Perry was transported to a nearby hospital.

Mr Perry was responsive and talking when paramedics arrived at the home, but his condition deteriorated.

He was hospitalised a day after it was confirmed many of the cast of "Beverly Hills 90210" were to reunite for a reboot of the show.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Easter Egg Solutions, DLC Seemingly Revealed

Details about Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s upcoming DLC and canceled campaign, as well as solutions to some of its Easter Egg mysteries, may have been revealed over the weekend.

Eurogamer reports that someone claiming to be a recently fired Treyarch quality assurance tester posted the info to Reddit under the since-deleted CallofNobodyCares account.

Reddit user CadzTrikz, however, reposted all of the leaked info, and players proceeded to verify that the Zombies Easter egg solutions were legitimate.

The remainder of this story contains potential spoilers.

According to the leak, Black Ops 4’s first DLC pack is a prequel to the game’s Chaos storyline that revolves around four new characters attending a mansion party. Everyone else at the party is said to be of the paranormal variety: zombies, ghosts, werewolves, and even Nosferatu. CallofNobodyCares also claimed the DLC will be full of secret chambers and will have an upgradable German “wonder weapon” based on Black Ops 4’s Ray Gun.

In addition to this first DLC pack, all subsequent packs are said to feature one Zombie map. Treyarch also plans to add Nuketown Zombies content at some point as well as more maps following the Aether storyline. A four-versus-four mode is also planned for Zombies, but there is a possibility it will be canceled.

Speaking of canceled modes, Treyarch was supposedly working on a campaign mode for Black Ops 4 as recently as mid-2017. The campaign was being designed as a two-versus-two co-operative race to finish each mission. Treyarch is said to have given up on the mode to allow it to focus on its desire to create more multiplayer maps.

As for the Easter eggs, CallofNobodyCares provided a number of solutions. Among them were the last steps for unlocking the Viking Funeral Easter egg on the IX mission that ends with a random power-up and a rock performance.

Elsewhere, he told players how to upgrade the Golden Spork into the Sporkknife by collecting stones and placing them in certain spots during the Blood of the Dead Mission. CallofNobodyCares also provided solutions to the Voyage of Despair mission’s Engine Room valves mystery and the steps for getting the character Samantha to explain the “Crooked Man in a Crooked House” riddle in the Classified mission.

Earlier this month, Treyarch added a new boss enemy to Black Ops 4 and made a companion app available for download. Fans aren’t happy with all of Treyarch’s plans for Black Ops 4, however, and many have complained about microtransactions.

Distemper Forces Gander SPCA To Put Down Almost Every Dog In Its Care

Nearly all of the puppies and fully-grown dogs at a Gander, Nfld. shelter must be euthanized to prevent the spread of an incurable and contagious virus.

According to a statement released by the Gander SPCA on Tuesday, an autopsy completed for a rescued puppy confirmed that it had distemper — an illness that damages a dog’s respiratory, digestive and nervous systems.

The virus is fatal in half of cases, and even dogs that survive almost always sustain permanent physical damage.

Dogs remain contagious for some time, threatening the well-being of other dogs for up to three months.

The shelter has quarantined its dog area since the puppy’s illness was discovered and the creature was euthanized.

Distemper is a rare, debilitating virus that can damage a dog’s major organs and central nervous system. Permanent palsy or shaking can occur if a dog’s brain is affected.

In an effort to protect not only other uninfected dogs, but also other wildlife including foxes, coyotes and bears, a team of veterinarians came to the conclusion that the best way to contain the virus was to euthanize every animal exhibiting signs of the virus.

“We have clung to hope these past couple of weeks, trying our absolute best to keep the virus from spreading from the puppies to our adult dogs, but they too started showing symptoms of distemper,” the shelter said.

Distemper can be avoided through vaccination

“Vaccinating your companion animals is of the utmost importance when it comes to stopping the spread of distemper and other virus that can be harmful or fatal,” the statement reads.

Only two adult dogs, Kali and Brock, have not shown signs of the disease. The animals will remain under strict quarantine for the foreseeable future, according to the statement.

The loss reinforced the need for isolation rooms in the shelter was clear during this “emotional” time, the SPCA statement said.

“While we feel defeated with this great loss, we will continue to push forward and advocate on behalf of those who can’t defend themselves.”

The shelter did not immediately return a request for comment.

Indianapolis’ Foley No-Hits North Georgia; Greyhounds Win Game 2 of NCAA DII Championship, 1-0

OKLAHOMA CITY – Indianapolis junior Morgan Foley twirled a no-hit gem and senior Taylor Russell drove in the game’s only one as the No. 10 Greyhounds (48-13) edged No. 7 North Georgia, 1-0, in game two of the 2015 NCAA Division II Championship, Thursday afternoon at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

Foley outdueled fellow NFCA First-Team All-American pitcher, Courtney Poole, by striking out 10 and walking two in her second no-hitter of the season and third of her career. The junior righty fanned eight of the first 10 batters she faced. Improving to 39-8, Foley only had to deal with four base runners, one in scoring position, all game. Two of those runners were taken care of by her battery mate Jenny Thompson, gunning down both Nighthawks (49-8) attempting to steal.

The only run of the contest came in the sixth on back-to-back hits by second-team NFCA All-Americans Casey Williamson and Russell. Williamson led off with a double that dropped between the left and centerfielder in no man’s land. Russell, who finished 2-for-3, followed with a cue shot off the end of the bat that rolled up the middle for the game-winning RBI.

Foley’s no-hit bit had a bit of a scare in the bottom of the seventh. With the tying run on second and one out, UNG’s Ansley Phillips roped what looked like the game-tying hit. It wasn’t so as Greyhound first baseman Natalie Lalich snagged the screaming line drive and doubled Kim McMillan off second to secure the no-hitter and more importantly the victory.

Poole, the Schutt Sports NFCA Player of the Year, suffered the tough loss and dropped to 42-4 on the season. She scattered five hits, struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Indianapolis returns to action tomorrow and will face Shorter, a 4-2 winner over St. Mary’s, in the first winner’s bracket game at 4:00 p.m. CT.  North Georgia heads to the elimination bracket and will take on St. Mary’s in game seven at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 23.

Ontario's Hydro One Is Sending Technicians To Help Fire-Ravaged California

Hydro One technicians will help with recovery efforts in California following a devastating wildfire that killed dozens of people and destroyed thousands of homes.

Ontario’s largest utility said about 20 forestry technicians will travel to northern California on Monday to help inspect electrical systems in areas that were obliterated by the fire.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this devastating fire,” said Greg Kiraly, Hydro One’s chief operating officer, in a statement. “Our highly skilled forestry technicians are uniquely qualified to help inspect the system during this time of crisis.”

Watch: Officials say the Camp fire is now 100 per cent contained. Story continues below.

U.S. authorities said the Camp fire was fully contained on Sunday after burning for more than two weeks, killing at least 85 people, flattening nearly 19,000 buildings and leaving 249 people unaccounted for.

Crews are sifting through ash and debris looking for human remains while also trying to repair power, telephone and gas utilities.

Hydro One said it will be inspecting 8,000 kilometres of electrical transmission lines in Chico, Calif., near Paradise, the town that was destroyed by the wildfire in about a day.

The company said that every kilometre of line must be inspected to ensure communities can access power safely, noting that inspections will also identify possible hazards along the transmission lines to prevent electrical fires from starting.

‘I’m just trying to survive here’: Shamima Begum prepares for life in a chaotic Syrian refugee camp

A hundred miles from the tarpaulin tent which Shamima Begum now calls home, the caliphate she once crossed the world to join was in its death throes.

A dwindling band of Islamic State fighters were surrounded by advancing Kurdish forces and facing annihilation beneath waves of American and British airstrikes.

But the 19-year-old from east London was indifferent to the end of the jihadist territory. She was worried instead about about finding baby formula for her week-old son, Jarrar.

3 Yoga Poses To Help Relieve Stress When Trying To Conceive

There are many factors during ovulation and fertilization that need to align to facilitate getting pregnant. Sometimes, issues such as ovulation disorders, endometriosis, high stress or other complications can impede fertility.

Osteopath and myofascial release therapist, Dr. Liza Egbogah BSc, DC, DOMP from the[fix] in Toronto, says non-invasive osteopathic treatments and even a specialized yoga practice can be effective in relieving pelvic adhesions scar tissue that can block or distort the fallopian tubes, which may hamper conceiving.

Watch the video above for a quick guide on postures that can help relieve fertility stress.

Myofascial release treats skeletal muscle immobility and pain by relaxing contracted muscles, improving blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulating the stretch reflex in muscles.

“I have seen great success in patients experiencing barriers to fertility, especially if you have a history of abdominal or pelvic surgery or trauma to the area,” says Dr. Egbogah.

Here are Dr. Liza’s recommended poses to help relieve fertility stress and improve circulation in the pelvic and abdominal areas.

Standing forward fold: With feet hip-width apart, interlock fingers behind your back. As you bend forward, the back of your hands should be pointing towards the ceiling. Relax your head and neck toward the ground completely while you feel an opening of the chest, and breathe while bent forward for 10 deep breaths.

What it does: This pose stretches the muscles of the back and improves the blood supply to the pelvic region and the nervous system. The forward fold can also help relieve stress, and alleviating stress is imperative when trying to get pregnant.

Nighttime goddess stretch: Lie on your back with knees bent. Place the soles of your feet together, then let your knees fall open, forming a diamond shape with your legs. Use your hands to gently push your knees towards the ground. If you feel any strain, elevate your legs by placing a pillow underneath each knee. Hold for 30 seconds.

What it does: This poses stretches your inner thighs and groin muscles. It also helps relieves stress and menstrual cramps.

Spinal twists: Sit with both legs straight in front of you. Adjust your legs so that you can sit evenly on your sitting bones. Cross your right foot over your left thigh and place it on the floor outside your left knee. Fold your left leg in, with your foot outside your right hip. Hold your right knee with your left hand, and place your right hand on the floor diagonally behind you. Lift your left arm high. Twist the torso as you draw your elbow down on the outside of your right thigh. Hold each pose for 30 seconds and repeat each side twice.

What it does: This pose enhances blood circulation to the pelvic area, and reduces stress.

You can practice these poses every day to help manage stress and get your body moving.

Guardians Fans Spend Over $4K on Rehire James Gunn Billboard on Way to Disneyland

Fans of director James Gunn created a website and paid a company $4,000 to run a digital billboard just outside of Anaheim, CA to show their support for Gunn and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, reported by THR.

The billboard is just four miles away from Disneyland in Anaheim and reads, “Save the Galaxy: James Gunn for Vol. 3.” It also has the group’s website at the bottom in large letters, RehireJamesGunn.com.

A GoFundMe campaign was created last month to raise money for billboards to be posted outside both Orlando and Anaheim Disney Parks. The group’s goal shows a total of $12,000, with close to $5,000 already being raised.

“One billboard near each park for at least one month, preferably during the holidays to maximize exposure,” the GoFundMe page reads.

A group of fans originally started the group and website after Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 last July due to conservative personalities on social media resurfacing old tweets that held controversial topics and jokes.

29-year-old Ohio chef, Giuseppe Cincinnato and one of the people behind the billboard, told THR it is to show their campaign is “not just all online outrage.”

“We really love Gunn as both a creator and the man we’ve seen him mature into,” Cincinnato said. “Even if this wasn’t going to cause Disney to see their mistake, we could at least show James Gunn how much support he has in his corner of the galaxy.”
