Why Wasn’t Carl in Rick’s Final Walking Dead Episode? Angela Kang Explains Chandler Riggs’ Absence

This interview contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 9, episode 5, “What Comes After.”

Although Rick didn’t die in Andrew Lincoln’s final episode of The Walking Dead, our hero was visited by several “ghosts” from his past while attempting to outrun a herd of walkers and make it back to his family: Jon Bernthal’s Shane, Scott Wilson’s Hershel, and Sonequa Martin-Green’s Sasha – each of whom gave our bleeding hero some much needed advice and motivation when it seemed he might be ready to give up and become zombie chow.

Many fans were disappointed that Chandler Riggs’ Carl and Sarah Wayne Callies’ Lori didn’t make an appearance for Rick’s swansong, given their close connection with the character, but Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang tells IGN that their close familial bond is exactly why the writers chose to keep Carl and Lori out of sight.

“We really took this concept of something called the Third Man phenomenon; a lot of times when people are on the brink of death, it’s a very common phenomenon that people who survive it, they believe that they saw somebody who came to help them, either somebody that they knew or sometimes just a total stranger like a sherpa appears out of nowhere to lead them down the mountain and it turns out that person was never there, it’s like a survival instinct that kicks in of some sort,” Kang explains.

“Creatively I felt that Rick’s hallucinations, these dreams that he’s having of Shane and Hershel and Sasha, they’re giving him specific things he needs in the moment to keep going: Shane’s giving him this primal courage, Hershel’s reminding him of the heart of everything, Sasha imparts some wisdom and gives him the bigger picture, and he keeps looking for his family,” Kang adds. “But I think if he were to see Lori and Carl in this afterlife, he might want to just stop because he’s found them, he’s home. His brain won’t even allow him to see them because he has to keep going for the family he still has, so that’s the heady part of it, and we never really need people to understand it, but that was our thinking behind why he does not see the two of them.”

Kang also tells us that the show’s six-year time-jump was designed in part to get Rick’s daughter Judith to the same age that Carl was when the series began, and also as a way of bookending Rick’s journey.

“There was something that felt like it really brought the story to an exciting place because we’ve never done a jump in time that long, but also it felt like it was a fitting end to this story of Rick’s journey,” she says. “He started off looking for his family and then he lost Lori and Carl who were the first two people he was looking for, but he found so much more. We’re left behind with this child who… there’s no reason why this child should’ve survived except she did, and it’s because of this community and this family that they’ve found that has protected her, and she has grown and thrived, and there was something about that felt like a nice little capper to the story of Rick’s arc on the show, but also rockets us into the next little chapter of the story that we’re telling.”

For more from Kang, check out why episode 5 is (surprisingly) the last we’ll see of Maggie this season, and read Andrew Lincoln’s take on ending Rick’s story with the three upcoming movies that The Walking Dead has planned. And below, check out the first photos from episode 6 to see how the rest of the characters look after a six-year time jump.

Gucci withdraws ‘golliwog’ black polo neck amid accusations of racism

Gucci withdrew a designer black polo neck from its shops and websites on Thursday after it was compared to offensive “golliwog” images, in the latest racism row to engulf an Italian fashion house.

The black jumper, which sells for £690, can be pulled up over the lower half of the face, leaving a person’s mouth framed with giant red lips.

The row came as several politicians in the United States, including the attorney-general of Virginia, have been embroiled in “blackface” controversies after blacking up in the past as a prank or joke.

Mark Herring, the state’s attorney-general, issued a statement on Wednesday saying that he wore brown makeup and a wig to look like a black rapper during a party that he attended as an undergraduate in 1980.

The Gucci sweater prompted indignation on social media, with one woman writing: “You mean to tell me NO ONE saw the awful blackface resemblance with this shirt? This is clear-cut proof that there is a HUGE lack of diversity at Gucci.”

The polo neck was described as “a racist golliwog image”, with one Twitter user remarking: “Jesus Christ. Who actually thought that this would be a good idea?”

But others said the criticism was an over-reaction. “The only offensive thing about this is the price. I suppose balaclavas are all racist now, too,” was one typical remark.

In a statement, Gucci said: “We deeply apologise for the offence caused by the wool balaclava jumper. We confirm that the item has been immediately removed from our online store and all physical stores.

"We are fully committed to increasing diversity throughout our organisation and turning this incident into a powerful learning moment for the Gucci team and beyond.”

Gucci is the third Italian fashion house to be accused of peddling racist stereotypes in the last few months.

In December, Prada was forced to withdraw a line of “Sambo-like” figurines and key rings that featured monkey-like characters with big red lips.

The company issued an apology, saying that the "resemblance of the products to blackface was by no means intentional.”

“First Prada, now Gucci. Shouldn’t it be quite easy for major fashion houses to avoid producing items that look like racist tropes? Why does this keep happening?” one woman commented on social media.

In November, Dolce & Gabbana had to apologise for an online ad campaign which featured a Chinese model struggling to eat Italian dishes such as spaghetti and pizza with a pair of chopsticks.

The model laughed and giggled apologetically, in a depiction which was criticised as a negative and outdated stereotyping of Chinese women.

The advertisement prompted fury from many Chinese and the fashion house had to cancel a fashion show in Shanghai.

Chinese retailers withdrew D&G products from their shops and websites, while some celebrities publicly criticised the brand.

The row was reignited when Stefano Gabbana, co-founder of the fashion house, posted a smiling poo emoji on his private Instagram account and referred to China as “a country of shit”.

The company insisted that his account had been maliciously hacked.

Last month, the model who appeared in the advertising campaign said it had almost wrecked her career.

“I feel guilty for causing the disturbance,” said Zuo Ye. “I never expected that this one time would almost ruin my model career.”

Promising that she would “grow from this experience”, she said she was mortified to have been accused of deriding Chinese women.

It is not just Italian brands that have been accused of racism and prejudice.

In 2011 John Galliano, the British designer, was sacked as creative director of Dior, the French fashion house, after hurling anti-Semitic and racist insults at a couple dining in a brasserie in Paris.

He later blamed his addiction to drugs and alcohol for the tirade and said he had no recollection of what he had said.

Canada's Tech Pay Gap Means Women Take Home $20,000 Less Than Men

TORONTO — Women in Canadian tech jobs, with a bachelor’s degree or higher, earn nearly $20,000 less a year than their male counterparts — and that pay gap can be just as stark for visible minority and Indigenous tech workers, a new study says.

The Brookfield Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, housed within Ryerson University in Toronto, crunched 2016 Statistics Canada census data with methodology based on the U.S. O*Net system for skills breakdowns.

It found a $19,750 pay gap between female and male workers with a Bachelor’s degree or higher, with women averaging $75,500 a year, compared with $95,100 for men.

Watch: Gender pay gap will take 200 years to close. Story continues below.

“These numbers pop out at you,” said Sean Mullin, the Brookfield Institute’s executive director.

“An almost $20,000 gap between men and women with a bachelor’s degree in the same profession in 2016, is still a pretty significant thing and we as citizens, should aspire to be better than that and to fix those types of disparities.”

The report defines tech workers as people either producing or making extensive use of technology, regardless of industry.

The research encompasses both digital occupations, which typically contribute to the development of hardware or software, and high-tech occupations that require advanced technical skills and usually includes engineers and scientists.

Brookfield said there are about 935,000 Canadians working in tech occupations, representing 5.1 per cent of the Canadian labour force that year.

When all Canadian tech jobs are examined, regardless of education, the pay gap shrinks to $7,300 with men earning $76,200 annually on average and women earning roughly $68,900.

Mullin said the report didn’t delve into causes of the gap, but noted that men were being drawn to more technical, higher paying jobs. He also pointed out that general research has shown women are less likely to enter science, technology, engineering and math careers and face additional barriers from family and cultural stereotypes.

“There are diversity and representation challenges, but they are not necessarily worse than other parts of the economy,” he said. “In some ways (tech) is better, but better is not good enough. We shouldn’t be satisfied with better.”

Across visible minority groups, the study found women receive lower compensation than their male counterparts in almost all cases. The exception was Chinese women, with an average salary $73,430 — about on par with Chinese men.

Meanwhile, Indigenous tech workers were paid significantly less than their non-Indigenous counterparts.

Inuit tech workers, regardless of sex, made about $45,000 per year on average. Workers identifying as First Nations earned $64,000 and Metis tech workers averaged $71,700.

“The tech sector has a long way to go,” said Mullin. “There shouldn’t be any reason why there are salary differentials between these groups and yet the data shows that there are.”

But Mullin stressed that the report didn’t just find areas in need of improvement, but bright spots too.

Tech workers were paid “considerably more” than non-tech workers, with high-tech workers earning on average $45,000 more and digital workers making $21,000 more.

Mullin said the Canadian tech sector has grown by 24 per cent over 10 years, becoming the country’s third highest category for jobs for growth.

Canada, he said, is on track to add at least another 200,000 jobs in the sector over the next decade.

“The tech sector is a good thing. These people are growing part of our economy and they tend to pay more than the average,” he said, “but if the tech sector is gong to be a big part of Canada’s future then we have to make sure it is being accessible and participation in it is open to everybody.”

Swiss resort in mourning after avalanche across piste kills ski patroller

The Swiss resort of Crans Montana has declared a week of mourning following the death of a ski patroller in an avalanche that crossed a piste. There will also be a minute’s silence at 2:23pm today.

Search and rescue teams have been out in force in the resort since the avalanche swept across a piste busy with half-term skiers at around 2.15pm on Tuesday afternoon.

An avalanche across a piste is very rare, and a particularly frightening occurrence since skiers and snowboarders on a resort’s official groomed pistes expect to be protected by prevention systems.

Resorts not only close at risk areas, their ski patrol sets off avalanches in areas where snow build up may be a danger, before skiers are allowed on the pistes below them.

However, social media footage from skiers who were on the Kandahar piste in the Plaine Morte area of Crans Montana shows the moment when a cloud of snow descended the groomed run.

One skier uphill of the videographer was engulfed by the snow. Other images and video from the scene show snow piled up on and around the piste – police statements say the avalanche was 100 metres wide and 840 metres long, 400 metres of which was on the piste.

Four injured people were rescued immediately, including two ski patrollers who were helping someone who had been involved in a separate accident. One of the ski patrollers, a 34-year-old man who had worked at the resort since 2010, later died from his injuries.

Rescuers were quickly at the site, searching for potential victims. According to statements from Valais Police, 244 people were engaged in the mission, including health workers and the army as well as ski patrol, along with eight helicopters, teams of avalanche dogs and piste basher machines.

The four injured people were airlifted to hospital in nearby Sion on Tuesday. Three of them, including the skier involved in the earlier accident and a second ski patroller, suffered only minor injuries. All but one of the three have now been released from hospital. Witnesses told police others could be buried so the search continued overnight and on Wednesday.

Representatives of the Institute for Snow and Avalanche research in Switzerland (SLF), which monitors avalanche activity, were also at the scene. With warm temperatures and sunny days across the Alps, following plentiful snowfall in previous weeks, avalanche risk had been set at a moderate 2 out of a possible 5 in the resort on Tuesday.

Avalanche risk of 2 means unstable slabs of snow causing avalanches are possible in the mountains. Avalanches usually take place off piste, and skiers and snowboarders venturing away from marked runs are advised to go with a mountain guide who knows the area and can make informed decisions about which slopes are safe.

They should also wear avalanche safety equipment such as a transceiver that enables them to be found if buried under the snow and to search for others, an avalanche airbag that inflates to carry them above the snow, plus a shovel and probe for helping with searching.

Because the risk of being caught in an avalanche on piste is so low, people who stay on the marked slopes are not advised to wear them and rarely do. As well as the usual search equipment, rescue workers in Crans Montana made use of a machine used by regional police that looks for mobile phone signals.

The cause of the avalanche is still being investigated by the public prosecutor’s office. However, speculation has included that it could have been triggered by skiers traversing across the off-piste slope above the piste, unstable snow, or even a localised earthquake.

Avalanche safety: How to stay safe from avalanches when skiing

Whatever the cause, the avalanche risk for Switzerland reported by the SLF remains generally low for the Valais region, which is also home to famous Swiss ski resorts such as Zermatt, Verbier, Andermatt and Saas Fee. It is now at 1 or 2 out of 5 everywhere for the most dangerous types of dry-snow avalanches, however in Crans Montana and some other resorts such as Gstaad the risk is set at 3 (considerable) for gliding avalanches in which the whole snowpack naturally slides down the mountain.

Most deaths from avalanches happen off piste. According to SLF, in the last 10 years (from 2008/09 to 2017/18) there was just one other death caused by an avalanche hitting a resort slope in Switzerland. In the same period there were 181 avalanche accidents involving freeriders or ski tourers off piste, resulting in 231 fatalities.

Avalanche expert Henry Schniewind of Henry’s Avalanche Talk also says the risk of an avalanche happening on piste is tiny. He told The Telegraph: “What happened in Crans-Montana is known as a post controlled avalanche – when a slope previously controlled for avalanches, which presumably it was, slides. It’s the biggest nightmare for resorts and ski patrollers anywhere, but it’s also extremely rare.

Essential guide | Off-piste skiing

“At this time of the season, all ski resorts are under pressure to open their slopes but they certainly don’t compromise on safety. However, accidents can happen. In this case, a local ski patroller lost his life and it reminds us how brave these people are, they risk their lives to help others.

“Right now, because of the rapidly warming temperatures, natural avalanches are being triggered. The risk of an avalanche on piste is tiny. If a piste is closed, this reminds us not to go on it. We need to wait for the investigation to find out exactly what happened here.”

Police statements say many calls have been made to its helpline, and the investigation on Wednesday focused on ruling out potential missing persons – the search has now been called off and a no-fly zone over the piste lifted. The Kandahar piste in Crans Montana remained closed while the enquiry continued.

The patroller, who has not been named, leaves a wife and two children. The lift company said: [The ski patroller] was passionate about the region and particularly about rescuing people in the Alpine environment. He was much appreciated by his team and the whole of the company both for his personal and professional qualities.

“CMA management and all staff have been deeply affected by the event and want to express their most heartfelt sympathy and compassion to the rescue worker’s family and loved ones.”

The resort has set up a support unit for colleagues, relatives and tourists, and employees and visitors are invited to wear a black armband for a week starting today, available from lower lift stations.

National Energy Board Endorses Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion

CALGARY — The National Energy Board has endorsed an expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline following a reconsideration of its impact on marine life off the B.C. coast.

The energy regulator says an increase in tanker traffic resulting from the pipeline would hurt southern resident killer whales and increase greenhouse gas emissions.

But it says the side effects can be justified in light of what would be the pipeline’s benefits.

“While these effects weighed heavily in the NEB’s consideration of project-related marine shipping, the NEB recommends that the government of Canada find that they can be justified in the circumstances, in light of the considerable benefits of the project and measures to minimize the effects.”

Alberta has been fighting hard for the Trans Mountain expansion so that the province could move more crude oil to ports and from there to lucrative overseas markets.

Starts the clock for feds’ decision

The energy board’s original approval of the project was set aside last summer by the Federal Court of Appeal, which said the regulator had not properly considered on marine life.

The NEB’s report starts the clock on a 90-day period for the federal government to decide whether the project should proceed.

Officials in Resources Minister Amarjeet Sohi’s office have said a final decision won’t be made until consultations with affected Indigenous groups are complete.

The consultations were also an issue the federal Appeal Court raised when it put a halt on the project.
