Mr Trump said that Kim had insisted all economic sanctions against…

ASA/USA Softball Announces Three Finalists For 2015 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and USA Softball announced today the three finalists for the 14th annual USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award.

The award, which is considered the most prestigious honor in Division I women’s collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. Florida’s Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.), Oregon’s Cheridan Hawkins (Anderson, Calif.) and Michigan’s Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif.) are the three remaining athletes in the running.

Past winners of this award include UCLA’s Stacey Nuveman, Florida State’s Jessica Van der Linden, three-time winner Cat Osterman of the University of Texas, Tennessee’s Monica Abbott, Virginia Tech’s Angela Tincher, two-time winner Danielle Lawrie of the University of Washington, Stanford’s Ashley Hansen, back-to-back winner Keilani Ricketts of the University of Oklahoma and 2014 winner Lacey Waldrop from Florida State.

The 2015 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Pitcher of the Year, Lauren Haeger has amassed a 26-1 record, an 1.34 ERA and 183 strikeouts in the circle through regional play. If that wasn’t enough, the senior also holds a .335 batting average, .653 slugging percentage and .474 on-base percentage. Haeger was voted SEC Pitcher of the Week three times this season and was the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week in week two. Florida will face Kentucky in this week’s Super Regionals for a spot in the NCAA Women’s College World Series (WCWS), which will be held in Oklahoma City on May 28-June 3.

Back-to-back Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year, Cheridan Hawkins boasts a 29-3 record, an 1.40 ERA and 249 strikeouts through regional play. Ranked in the top 10 in the nation in wins, shutouts and saves, Hawkins was also named first team All-Pac 12 and leads the conference in wins, ERA and opposing batting average.  Oregon will vie with N.C. State this week in the Eugene Super Regional, with the winner earning a spot in the WCWS.

A two-time Big 10 Player of the Year, Sierra Romero ranks in the top 10 nationally with a .474 batting average, a .628 on-base percentage, 78 RBI and a .987 slugging percentage, while slugging 21 home runs. A three-time unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten first team, Romero was also named the 2015 espnW Player of the Year and established a new NCAA record for career grand slams. Behind their junior slugger, the Wolverines won their eighth straight Big 10 regular season title and will face Georgia in this week’s Super Regionals.

The winner of the 2015 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced on May 26 at a banquet just prior to the start of the WCWS.

The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award is voted on by coaching representatives from 10 Division I conferences in the 15 ASA Regions, members of the media who consistently cover Division I softball across the country as well as past winners of the award.

Air Canada Halts Flights To India Amid Tensions With Pakistan

MONTREAL — Air Canada says it has suspended service to India as tensions mount between that country and Pakistan.

An airline spokeswoman says a flight en route to Delhi turned back over the Atlantic Ocean this morning and has headed back to Toronto.

A second Air Canada flight from Vancouver to Delhi today was also cancelled.

Watch: India expects safe return of pilot held in Pakistan. Story continues below.

Spokeswoman Isabelle Arthur says the airline has implemented a “goodwill policy” for affected customers and is monitoring the situation in order to resume service once it “normalizes.”

Pakistan said Wednesday it had shot down two Indian warplanes and captured two pilots in the disputed region of Kashmir, raising tensions between the two nuclear powers to a level unseen in this century.

Air Canada operates daily service from Toronto and Vancouver to Delhi and four times weekly between Toronto and Mumbai.

Jack Reacher Author Says Streaming TV Reboot in the Works Without Tom Cruise

Lee Child, the author who created and penned 23 Jack Reacher novels and various short stories, has confirmed that a TV reboot of his prolific series is on the way, albeit without Tom Cruise in the titular role.

In an interview with BBC Radio, Child claimed that, despite various fitting qualities, Cruise was simply too short for the role, clocking in at 5’7”. Jack Reacher, on the other hand, is supposed to be 6’5” tall.

“I really enjoyed working with Cruise. He’s a really, really nice guy,” said Child. “We had a lot of fun, but ultimately the readers are right. The size of Reacher is really, really important and it’s a big component of who he is. The idea is that when Reacher walks into a room, you’re all a little nervous just for that first minute. And Cruise, for all his talent, didn’t have that physicality.

“So what I’ve decided to do is – there won’t be any more movies with Tom Cruise. Instead we’re going to take it to Netflix or something like that. Long form streaming television, with a completely new actor. And I want all those readers who were upset about Tom Cruise to help me out – participate in choosing the right actor for the TV series. We’re rebooting and starting over and we’re going to try and find the perfect guy.”

Though the decision to forgo Cruise as Jack Reacher may have been for this simple reason, he isn’t known for being a television actor in the first place. Considering that the second Jack Reacher film, Never Go Back, earned considerably less than the first, it’s possible the switch to television and Cruise not appearing could be a result of a combination of factors.

Child confirmed that a deal was signed last week to make the series into a streaming show, though no specific streaming service, release dates or casting have been announced.

For more on Jack Reacher, check out our review of the original, which we described as “a pedestrian flick riddled with cliches and one-note characters.” In our review of the sequel Never Go Back, we said it’s “a fun, absurd action romp with a few memorable moments that can’t help but be boosted by Cruise’s natural onscreen charisma.”

Jay-Z hires lawyer for British rapper 21 Savage over ‘absolute travesty’ deportation threat

Jay-Z has come to the defence of UK-born rapper 21 Savage, describing his arrest and detainment by US immigration authorities as “an absolute travesty” and paying for a lawyer to represent him.

21 Savage, whose real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, is a British national who moved to the US aged 12 in 2005 and went on to overstay his visa.

He was arrested in his hometown of Atlanta on Sunday, and his case has become a cause celebre for the music community, with Cardi B, Meek Mill and Offset calling for his release.

21 Savage is nominated for two Grammy Awards at this weekend’s ceremony, including record of the year for the chart-topping track Rockstar with fellow rapper Post Malone.

Jay-Z, 49, announced on Thursday that his entertainment company, Roc Nation, has hired New York-based immigration lawyer Alex Spiro to assist with the case.

"The arrest and detention of 21 Savage is an absolute travesty, his U visa petition has been pending for 4 years,” wrote the Brooklyn-born rapper on his Facebook page.

"In addition to being a successful recording artist, 21 deserves to be reunited with his children immediately, #Free21Savage."

21 Savage, 26, has three children who are all US citizens.

Mr Spiro told US showbiz website TMZ the legal team will "not stop" until 21 Savage is released.

He also denied ICE’s claims that the rapper has a criminal record. Immigration authorities said on Sunday he was charged with drug offences in 2014, but his legal team say they were subsequently expunged from his record.

Mr Spiro added: "What we have here is someone who overstayed their visa with an application pending for four years – not a convicted criminal that needs to be detained and removed but, by all accounts a wonderful person, father, and entertainer who has a marijuana offence which was vacated and sealed."

The U visa he has applied for is for victims of crime, after his lawyers said he survived a shooting in 2013.

MacDonald and Poole Selected Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Cal State East Bay senior outfielder Jaynie MacDonald and North Georgia junior Courtney Poole were named the Louisville/Slugger NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively for games played over Feb. 23-March 1.

MacDonald batted .417 (8-17) with a double, five home runs, eight RBI and six runs scored in five games as the Pioneers went 3-2 last week, including two wins over then-No. 19 Humboldt State. The Salinas, Calif. native slugged 1.412 and homered in three straight at bats spanning two games against Humboldt State, which included two long balls with three RBI in 7-5 triumph over the Jacks. Recording the game-winning round tripper in the series opener, MacDonald also generated three two-hit contests and scored twice in three games en route to a CCAA Player of the Week honors.

“Jaynie is a special student-athlete,” said Cal State East Bay head coach Barbara Pierce. “She is the first one at practice and the last one to leave. She always does the little things and the things no one else wants to do. She had a monster week, and it was well earned through the hard work she puts in every day at practice and in the gym.”

Poole, a native of Powder Springs, Ga., had a hand in five of North Georgia’s six wins last week as she went 4-0 with a save and highlighted the week by tossing her first perfect game and the second in program history. The Peach Belt Pitcher of the Week allowed just one run (0.30 ERA) on 11 hits, struck out 34 with just one walk and held opponents to a .132 batting average in 23.1 innings of work. In her perfect game, she struck out five and retired all 15 batters she faced in the five-inning win over Tiffin. Poole also struck out nine in a five-inning win over Union and capped off her week fanning 12 in a complete game victory over Pfeiffer.

“It’s a great honor to be named National Pitcher of the Week by the NFCA,” Poole said. “I could not have done it without the help of my teammates. It was a team effort that led to our success last week.”

“Courtney worked really hard through the fall and it is great to see her hard work paying this season,” UNG head coach Mike Davenport said. “She is shouldering much of the load for us in the circle and I’m very proud of the way she has carried herself and stepped up as a team leader. We’re thrilled the NFCA is recognizing her performance.”

25 Ontario Pot Licence Lottery Winners Announced Out Of 17,000 Applicants

TORONTO — Ontario has announced the first 25 companies that can apply for cannabis retail licences in the province.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario says Tripsetter Inc., The Niagara Herbalist and Pure Alpha Holdings are among those that have been selected through a lottery.

The agency accepted expressions of interest for the licences earlier in the week, and received more than 17,000.

Of those, more than half came from sole proprietors hoping to open up shop, while a third came from corporations.

Licenses divided regionally

Those selected have five business days to turn in their applications along with a $6,000 non-refundable fee and a $50,000 letter of credit.

The licences are being divided regionally, with five going to the east of the province, seven in the west, two in the north, six in the Greater Toronto Area and five in Toronto itself.

Recreational cannabis can currently only be purchased legally in Ontario through a government-run website, with the first private stores set to open April 1.

The Progressive Conservative government had initially said it would not put a cap on the number of outlets, but later said it would begin with only 25 licences due to what it called serious cannabis supply issues that had to be addressed by the federal government.

Attorney General Caroline Mulroney said Friday that she had confidence in the retail licensing process led by the AGCO, which extended a Wednesday afternoon application deadline by an hour after receiving a flurry of last-minute applications.

“I’m confident,” Mulroney said. “A fairness monitor was overseeing the process. The people who wanted to apply, if they did so in the time frame, their application will be processed.”

Working to address supply issues

The AGCO has said it can levy thousands in fines if applicants who get retail licences do not open their stores on time. Failing to sell pot by April 30, for example, would result in a $25,000 fine.

Mulroney stressed that the province will lift the cap on the number of stores in the province once the federal government addresses supply issues.

“Certainly, we need to see more stores in place across the province but given the national supply shortage and the amount of supply that we currently have, we believed that we need to do this in an equitable way,” she said.

Critics have said Ontario’s store cap will allow the black market to thrive, but Mulroney stressed that the government could not ask store operators to open with no guarantee of product supply.

Three-Run Fifth Surges No. 24 Shorter Past No. 7 St. Mary’s in Game One of NCAA DII Softball Championship

OKLAHOMA CITY – Behind a three-run fifth and sophomore Ericka Bynum’s 3-for-3, two RBI performance, No. 24 Shorter defeated No. 7 St. Mary’s, 4-2 in game one of the 2015 NCAA Division II Championship, Thursday afternoon at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

Heading into the bottom of the fifth trailing 2-1, the Hawks (42-15) put three runs on the board and did not look back. Senior Maggie Meacham’s opposite field two-run double to the left centerfield gap put her team up for good, 3-2. Bynum (pictured) tacked on an insurance run, shooting a RBI single back up the middle.

That’s all freshman hurler Amanda Blanchard needed to earn the three-hit complete-game win. After surrendering a two-out home run and the lead in the top of the fourth, Blanchard buckled down and retired the final 10 batters of the game. She struck out five and walked a batter to improve to 19-4.

Joining Bynum in the multiple-hit category for the Hawks were freshman Niki Hall, a third-team NFCA All-American, and sophomore Cameron Carter with two hits apiece. Shorter was 12-for-24 at the plate with two extra base hits.

Bynum put Shorter on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-out RBI single to right, scoring junior Kendall Johnson. Johnson drew a two-out walk, stole second and moved to third on an error before Bynum came through with her first RBI of the day.

Senior and second-team NFCA All-American, Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone started in the circle for the Rattlers (48-11) and helped herself out in the top of the fourth, sending a two-out, two-run moonshot down the leftfield line for a 2-1 lead.

However, the Hawks started to find a groove in the fifth and forced a pitching change. It didn’t slow down Shorter, which registered five hits, four to the opposite field and one back up the middle, in the decisive three-run fifth.

Gutierrez Touchtone recorded two of the Rattlers’ three hits. Haley Rickter also singled for St Mary’s. Guitierrez Touchtone (28-6) suffered the defeat, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits. She struck out two and walked one.

Shorter returns to action tomorrow and will face the winner of game two between No. 6 North Georgia and No. 10 Indianapolis at 4:00 p.m. CT. St. Mary’s moves to the elimination bracket and will face the loser of game two on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
