Fox News condemns its own host over comments about congresswoman’s hijab

Fox News has condemned its host Jeanine Pirro after she questioned whether a Muslim congresswoman’s wearing of a headscarf stood in conflict to the US Constitution.

In a rare rebuke of one of its star presenters, the network said: "We strongly condemn Jeanine Pirro’s comments about Rep. Ilhan Omar. They do not reflect those of the network and we have addressed the matter with her directly."

Pirro suggested on her Saturday show that Ms Omar’s religious beliefs may run counter to the US Constitution, saying: "Think about it: Omar wears a hijab, which, according to the Qur’an 33:59, tells women to cover so they won’t get molested. Is her adherence to this Islamic doctrine indicative of her adherence to Sharia law, which in itself is antithetical to the United States Constitution?"

Ms Omar, who is a Somali-American and of the first Muslim women elected to Congress in November, has been at the centre of a furious row over anti-Semitism after controversial comments she made about Israel.

The Democratic Party was forced to pass a resolution in the House of Representatives last week condemning the use of anti-Semitic stereotypes after Ms Omar compared support for Israel to “allegiance to a foreign country”.

Ms Omar, who has already been once rebuked by Democrat leadership over her comments on Israel in the two months she has been in office, triggered this new row with a tweet.

She wrote: “I should not be expected to have allegiance/pledge support to a foreign country in order to serve my country in Congress or serve on committee”

Pirro, also known as Judge Jeanine, opened her weekend programme criticising Ms Omar for “anti-Israel sentiment” and questioned whether it was rooted in the representative for Minnesota’s Islamic beliefs.

“She’s not getting this anti-Israel sentiment doctrine from the Democrat Party. So if it’s not rooted in the party, where is she getting it from?” Pirro said on her "Justice with Judge Jeanine" show.

The comments drew criticism from her own colleagues. Hufsa Kamal, a producer on Fox’s "Special Report with Bret Baier," tweeted: "@JudgeJeanine can you stop spreading this false narrative that somehow Muslims hate America or women who wear a hijab aren’t American enough? You have Muslims working at the same network you do, including myself."

Responding to the furore, Pirro said her intention "was to ask a question and start a debate."

"Of course because one is Muslim does not mean you don’t support the Constitution. I invite Rep. Omar to come on my show any time to discuss all of the important issues facing America today."

Rape Culture Is Winning The World Cup

I’ve become sucked into watching the World Cup games this year. I think my mind is starving for something to focus on that’s not horrifying world news. But it’s hard to ignore the many ways in which the event is, and always has been, incredibly gendered.

While many are criticizing the sexual harassment and sexism pervasive at this year’s World Cup, sexism in the world of sports (or anywhere) is nothing new at all. But seeing how the World Cup is currently in its throes, there’s no time like the present to take a look at some of the many shocking ways in which this year’s mega-event has truly crossed the line, including for sports journalists that are women.

Julia Guimarã

On Sunday, Julia Guimarães, a sports reporter for Brazil’s TV Globo and sportv, had to scold a man who tried to kiss her during a live report in front of a stadium in Yekaterinburg before the Senegal-Japan match. She successfully ducked the idiot and proceeded to tell him off as her mic was cut. “Don’t do this,” she said. “I don’t allow you to do this, never, OK? This is not polite. This is not right. Never do this. Never do this to a woman, OK? Respect.”

Guimarães later tweeted that it’s “hard to find words,” and that similar incidents had also happened to her twice already in Russia, one of these at the Egypt-Uruguay game. “It’s awful. I feel helpless, vulnerable. This time I gave an answer, but it’s sad, people do not understand. I wanted to understand why you think you have a right to do that,” she said, according to a translation.

Julieth Gonzalez Theran

Berlin-based Colombian journalist Julieth Gonzalez Theran was groped and kissed during a live-air broadcast at the World Cup. It happened fast. As she was giving a live report from Moscow, a man appeared out of nowhere, grabbed her breast and kissed her on the cheek. She continued with her report, fully ignoring the guy, but later expressed her outrage on Instagram.

Claudia Neumann

Claudia Neumann is the first woman ever to narrate a men’s World Cup game for German public broadcaster ZDF. Sadly, and unsurprisingly, Neumann has experienced a barrage of hatefully sexist online abuse and criticism from male fans.

At the start of this year’s World Cup, she responded to the internet hate calmly. “No, I do not care about it,” she said, adding that the internet hate represents only a “minority that receives a lot of attention.”

Burger King’s “controversial” World Cup ad campaign

Yo, check out this: Burger King Russia’s ad was honestly and truly offering money and free burgers to Russian women impregnated by Russian World Cup players. Unsurprisingly, it was removed after people, you know, reacted.

“Each will receive 3 million rubles [$47,000 USD],” said the ad, “and a lifelong supply of Whoppers. For these girls, it will be possible to get the best football genes and will lay down the success of the Russian national team on several generations ahead.”

Although it’s unclear whether or not this next-level vile ad was a response to comments made by Russian politician Tamara Pletnyova, who urged Russian women not to have sex with foreign World Cup visitors, I’m calling multiple isms on this one either way. Burger King has since issued an apology, but, um, where to even start?

Getty Images joins the party too, because why not

If I haven’t sufficiently rained on your World Cup parade just yet, Getty Images posted a gallery of photographs titled “World Cup 2018: The Sexiest Fans,” comprised entirely of shots of (conventionally) attractive (and in most cases, scantily clad) women. They, of course, came under the gun after that for not feeding their straight women (or gay/bi men) viewers any eye candy whatsoever, and seemingly mocking the concept of women enjoying sports. Getty has since removed the gallery and issued a brief apology.

Brazilian UN Women issues a statement

The many misogynist incidents at this year’s World Cup are just the latest evidence that rape culture is thriving around the world, and knows no cultural bounds.

In addition to these incidents, a bombardment of Twitter posts showcasing sexist and harassing behaviours by Brazilian soccer fans in Russia actually prompted the Brazilian office of UN Women to issue a statement, decrying the “deliberate intention of some Brazilian fans to sexually harass women during the World Cup.”

For me, one silver-lined takeaway in all of this is social media. In many cases it has been a real outlet for targeted women reporters, and a powerful tool for rallying support and rightful indignation, as well as spreading awareness. Because what more can we really do than spread the good word and fight misogynist bullshit wherever and whenever possible?

Star Wars Theme Park Gets Its Own Theme From John Williams

John Williams, the legendary Star Wars composer, will be creating new and original Star Wars themes that will be used exclusively in the upcoming Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge theme park.

Announced by Bob Chapek, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products, Williams, who suggested that Star Wars: Episode IX may be his last Star Wars film, will be a part of Galaxy’s Edge for years to come through his music and, as Disney said, “Star Wars wouldn’t be Star Wars without Williams’ incredible, sweeping scores.”

Disney also revealed a preview of Williams’ work, which you can see below, that was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios and features footage of the construction underway at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

In addition, names and new details for two of the major attractions that will be featured at Galaxy’s Edge on opening day were revealed – Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

In Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, guests will be able to control the “fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy in one of three unique flight crew roles.”

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will put guests “in the middle of an epic battle between the Resistance and the First Order.”

As for the rest of Galaxy’s Edge, guests will be able to “visit a street market in Black Spire Outpost, shop at food stalls where you can enjoy delicacies like blue milk, or visit the Cantina where you can see an old friend, Rex, as well as creatures and characters that are hallmarks of the Star Wars Universe.”

Lastly, Disney shared two new concept images for the Star Wars-themed resort that is coming to Walk Disney World Resort that will allow you to “experience a fully-immersive, multi-day Star Wars adventure aboard a luxury starship complete with high-end dining, space-view cabins, and exciting action.”

Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge will open at Disneyland Resort in summer of 2019 and at Walt Disney World Resort in fall of 2019.

Indian court dismiss opposition attempts to block Modi biopic days before general election

Two Indian courts have dismissed legal bids to delay the release of a biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi this Friday, less than a week before the first round of voting begin in India’s general elections.

The Bombay High Court on Monday dismissed a petition by activists demanding a stay on the release of PM Narendra Modi, before voting on the grounds that its screening provided the prime minister with "unfair electoral mileage".

The Delhi High Court too ruled similarly against an appeal that argued the biopic cannot be independent of the political personality on whose name and life the biopic is based, and hence would "unduly" influence voters.

The film’s trailer features dramatic music and flag waving as it retells Mr Modi’s journey from a lowly tea seller in western Gujarat state to becoming prime minister in 2014 as head of India’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

The two-minute-and-a-half teaser also portrays Mr Modi leading his followers and Indian soldiers in snowy terrain in the Himalayan disputed Kashmir region, before they face a fusillade of bullets from Muslim militants.

“If you strike us again, we’ll strike harder,” Mr Modi says brandishing the Indian flag and yelling “Glory to Mother India”.

Adopting a tough policy against Pakistan stand and inside insurgency-ridden Kashmir are the major themes of Mr Modi’s and the BJP’s election campaign.

The main Opposition Congress Party and other regional parties opposed to the BJP, however, view the biopic as a "naked and cynical political move" and have petitioned the Election Commission to delay its release till after the polls.

If the Commission rules in their favour it could also adversely affect a 10-part web-based series on Mr Modi’s life that too is due for release later this month.

The Modi biopic follows two other recently released political films in the run up to the elections.

The Accidental Prime Minister – a biopic of Mr Modi’s predecessor Manmohan Singh from the Congress Party – was released in January and portrayed him as a weak and ineffectual head of government.

Another film, Uri: The Surgical Strike, dramatised India’s covert military action inside Pakistan-administered Kashmir in September 2016 and significantly boosted Mr Modi’s image as a decisive and no-nonsense leader who deserved re-election.

Following Tuesday’s court ruling, the Election Commission of India that conducts and oversees all federal and provincial polls will now adjudicate on the matter.

Sandip Ssingh, the biopic’s producer and scriptwriter, said he was now hoping to release his film by April 5.

“We are happy that justice has been given to the film”, he declared, adding that he was merely endeavouring to tell the story of a great human being in order to ‘inspire’ all Indians.

New Brunswick's Cannabis Retailer Announces Layoffs Three Months After Legalization

FREDERICTON — New Brunswick’s cannabis retailer is laying off staff, saying it has a better understanding of “operational needs” three months after the historic legalization of recreational marijuana.

Cannabis NB said most of the layoffs involved people with seasonal contracts, but some are part-time or full-time employees.

Spokeswoman Marie-Andree Bolduc said Thursday that despite supply challenges, operations have normalized at the 20 stores and they now understand the needs of each outlet.

Watch: Want to invest in pot stocks? Here’s what you need to know. Story continues below.

She said the move is typical for new retail operations, and in line with a need for “long-term fiscal responsibility.”

Under the former Liberal government, New Brunswick had seen legalized cannabis as green gold — a chance to rake in profits and create production and retail jobs, with a community college program developed for cannabis technicians.

In a statement, Bolduc did not immediately confirm the number of people laid off.

“In preparing for the launch of the new legal cannabis industry, Cannabis NB wanted to ensure that a well-trained, qualified team was built that was large enough to set up the retail locations, fill the work schedules and deliver the right customer experience and education based on demand,” she said.

“The teams and roles were structured to allow flexibility in the delivery of the customer experience needed and manage expectations that staffing of stores may change after launch.”

Bolduc says they’ll be releasing quarterly sales figures at the end of January.

Madonna Shares Cover Of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' In Birthday Message

Madonna turned 60 today, and celebrated by giving Canadians just another reason to adore her.

The queen of pop released an official video of her cover of Leonard Cohen’s 1984 hit “Hallelujah.” She’d originally performed the Montreal singer and songwriter’s iconic ballad in a surprise appearance at the 2018 Met Gala, but only amateur fan videos and a few publications captured the divine show — until now.

“In celebration of my birthday and as a ‘thank you’ for all your donations on my Birthday Fundraiser, I wanted to share a very special performance from this year’s Met Gala,” Madonna tweeted Thursday.

The video attached to her tweet shows just the beginning of Madonna’s performance (such a queen move! Always keeping us hanging!), but the full video on her YouTube channel shows her singing all three songs in that night’s repertoire: “Like A Prayer,” “Beautiful Game” and then bringing it home with “Hallelujah.”

Cohen died in 2016 at the age of 82, leaving Canada in mourning over the loss of one of our greatest musical artists. This year, Canada’s Walk of Fame announced that he will get a posthumous honour.

Earlier in August, Madonna revealed that she’d moved to Portugal to escape U.S. President Donald Trump. But, with this cover, she can go ahead and consider herself an honourary Canadian.

Strategy Guide Publisher Prima Games Shutting Down

Longtime strategy guide maker Prima Games is shutting down next year, according to new reports.

Variety reports that a spokesperson for publisher DK said “I can confirm that the decision has been made to no longer commission new Prima Games strategy guides and the U.S.-based imprint will be discontinued in Spring 2019. We are in conversations with the Prima Games team and cannot comment on this further at this point.”

Prima’s three U.S. offices reportedly will be shut down one at a time starting with its Roseville, Calif. location by the middle of this month, according to EGM. The Indianapolis location will close its doors in March 2019 while it’s unknown when the New York City office will be closed.

As of publication time, customers can still preorder guides for upcoming games. A Prima representative told GamesIndustry.biz that the company will not commission any new strategy guides and will discontinue all imprinting in spring 2019.

It’s unknown how many employees will be put out of work when each office shuts down. “We are in conversations with the Prima Games team and cannot comment on this further at this point,” a Prima representative told GamesIndustry.biz.

Prima Games was founded in 1990, becoming the first company to print guides for Nintendo Entertainment System games. In 2015, it merged with its biggest competitor, Brady Games, after Prima parent company Penguin Group bought BradyGames parent company Random House.
