CW Orders Batwoman Pilot With Game of Thrones Director Involved

The CW’s Batwoman project, starring Ruby Rose, has been given a pilot pickup order and Game of Thrones director David Nutter will helm the pilot.

As reported by EW, this pilot pickup order follows the DC crossover event that introduced Ruby Rose’s Batwoman and took place in three parts across The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl.

EW also has the official description of the series, which is as follows;

“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (star Ruby Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”

As previously mentioned, Emmy-winning director David Nutter will lead the pilot. Nutter has directed such episodes of Game of Thrones as The Rains of Castamere (The Red Wedding), and has more episodes on the way in the upcoming final season.

Additionally, Nutter is “also know around Hollywood as “the pilot whisperer” as he’s credited with directing numerous successful pilots that were eventually picked up to series.”

His credits, alongside Game of Thrones, include first episodes of such series as The Flash, Arrow, The Mentalist, Supernatural, Without a Trace, and Smallville.

There have been reports of a Batwoman TV series dating back to July of 2018 and we’ve recently discussed how this crossover event set up the now announced spinoff series.

That seems like all the justification the Legends would need to get involved in this conflict. Sometimes I Wish I Had 'Good Hair'

As a young girl, I lived for Saturday morning cartoons. In the cartoons I watched, the little black girl had pretty brown pigtails, or dark hair just as straight as her blonde friend. Same skin as mine, but different hair.

As I grew, so too did my TV choices, from after school specials, to angst ridden teen dramas, to late night sitcoms and blockbuster movies. While my entertainment choices changed, the girls and women I saw on screen rarely did. White women with flowing hair. Black women with big curly weaves. Brown women with long hair down their backs. Never someone who looked quite like me.

Soon I came to realize, that “black” faces are wanted on TV, to represent diversity and growth in a highly exclusionary industry, but only certain black faces. Usually a girl of mixed race, whose skin is fair and whose hair is relatable to most people. A girl whose hair can be called “exotic” or “unique” while not being too different. Little black girls, usually under the age of 10, are allowed to have nappy roots, but never leading teenagers or adult women whose sex appeal equals ratings. And, in case you were wondering, it’s OK for guys to be dark skinned with nappy hair, even if the actress’ playing their sisters are not (e.g. Cosby Show, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air).

Eventually I came to realize that I’m not pretty. Not in the way that others want me to be. My hair, thick and nappy, is too different from that of the usual leading lady, so it is hidden on screen. Either covered or ignored altogether. I think about all of the beautiful black actresses given great opportunities to shine today (Storm Reid in a Wrinkle in Time or Zendaya in Spider-Man), and that’s amazing, but can count on one hand how many dark skinned girls rocking natural hair exist in mainstream media. (To be clear I think there needs to be various representations of “blackness” on screen. I loved that author Nicola Yoon wrote Everything Everything so that her daughter could “see herself in media”.)

To this day, when I watch an actress’s silky strands sway and move on TV, pangs of jealousy hit me. I can’t help it. Sometimes for brief moments, sometimes longer. If only I looked like that, I too would be prettier, happier, more likeable.

Now here’s the thing, my argument is not that mixed girls shouldn’t be on TV, or that weaves and braids are bad. Please, girl, let your curls go free, rock your weave and own those braids. I simply wished, still wish, that there were more people on screen who made me feel as if I could be pretty enough to be on a TV show, that I, with my hair as is, could have enough sex appeal to land the new attractive neighbour.

I simply wish that Danai Gurira had been on screen when I was younger, and that there were more black female faces and hair in mainstream media (not just Black Panther) that looked like hers. I simply wish that the family with two black parents wouldn’t suddenly have a mixed daughter with thick curly hair. I simply wish that there were more dreadlocks, more box braids, more bantu knots, more cornrows, more 4C afros in our media, beyond edgy fashion shows and editorial spreads.

In short, I wish that my nappy black hair was normalized. Not made a big ordeal like in Nappily Ever After, or as something we should feel ashamed of like in Good Hair (I’m sorry, but you can’t shame women for wanting to change their hair when they’re told it’s the only way to be accepted), but simply there. Simply there in the casting choice, simply there in the way a character finger combs her braid-out in the morning, simply there without being “othered.”

We know about the unnatural, often unattainably high, beauty standards created for women, and men, of all colours. I would like to end on a better note but that’s just the way it is, and something has to change. Maybe if we start with small changes in our cartoons, after school specials, angst ridden teen dramas, late night sitcoms and blockbuster movies, infuriating instances like a young girl getting kicked out of class for her braided hair extensions wouldn’t still occur today. And maybe the next generation of black girls will learn to be a little kinder to themselves.

Nintendo Explains Why E3 Is Still Important, ‘No-Brainer’ to Participate

In the wake of Sony’s announcement that it will skip E3 for the first time in 24 years, Nintendo said it will still attend, calling the show an “outstanding opportunity” to make new announcements.

Following The Game Awards last week, I spoke to Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime about exactly why E3 is still a priority for Nintendo.

“E3, those five days, is the opportunity for the world to find out what’s new for video games as entertainment. And during that time, we generate more engagement than…whether it’s CES or Comic-Con, or other big entertainment events,” Fils-Aime told IGN. “People tune in to find out what’s new and to have first playable experiences for our industry. That’s why E3 is important to Nintendo.”

Still, Fils-Aime emphasized that just showing up isn’t enough, and that Nintendo has changed its approach each year to match the games it’s currently highlighting.

For us it’s a very effective opportunity to deliver our message, and therefore it’s a bit of a no-brainer for us to participate.

“Our mentality has been to constantly innovate what we do and how we message at E3,” he said. “We’ve innovated in how we utilize our booth space, to create a little piece of Hyrule or to create a little piece of the environment in Super Mario Odyssey, as examples. We innovate in how we deliver our messaging, whether it was the big stage productions or whether it’s the Direct communications that we do today.

“And so everyone’s watching, we drive innovation, we leverage the elements, so for us it’s a very effective opportunity to deliver our message, and therefore it’s a bit of a no-brainer for us to participate. Now, what’s important as an industry, though, is that E3 in total continues to innovate and it continues to be that leading opportunity to drive consumer engagement in this way. So that’s why we participate. That’s why I sit on the board of the ESA and help drive some of this thinking. It’s important to us.”

As for what Nintendo shows during the event, Fils-Aime said it’s a balancing act between games that will be released soon and those that are further away. Often the latter will be used to reassure fans that more traditional experiences are on the way, such as the core Pokemon RPG reemphasized alongside the announcement of Pokemon: Let’s Go, or a mainline Fire Emblem game (which later became Fire Emblem: Three Houses) announced alongside Fire Emblem Warriors.

“Broadly speaking, we like to talk about games that are closer. Typically, for example, at E3, we’ll focus on content maybe extending into the first or second calendar quarter following E3. That is typically our horizon,” he said. “We believe that works because it’s close enough that the fans can be excited and look forward to it. And when we do have an exception and do something different, we’re doing it for very specific reasons.

“Maybe we have two experiences within a particular franchise, and we know that one might be maybe a nontraditional representation of that franchise. Or maybe then it’s important for us to frame that the more traditional visualization of that franchise is coming. ‘Fans, don’t worry, but here’s something different to tide you over in the meantime.’ So that’s how we think about it, and how we approach our consumer communication. We want to be near-end. We want to deliver news when it’s most meaningful. We don’t want to be so far out that the consumer either loses interest, or worse, gets frustrated.”

France celebrates 40,000 gay marriages in 4 and a half years

While mass demonstrations greeted the authorization of gay marriage in France in mid-2013, between that point and 2017, around 40,000 same sex couples have been officiated, new statistics show.

Proponents of gay marriage are hopeful following new marriage statistics released by France’s National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies Tuesday. The data for 2017 shows that 7,244 same sex marriages were officiated during the year.
On Twitter, one user expressed hope for a day when gay marriage would become so naturalized it would no longer even put in a separate category.

Despite the fact that the total of number of marriages decreased fairly dramatically in the 20-year period leading up to 2017, the number of homosexual unions has been slowly but steadily increasing. This indicates a demographic trend which coincides with a depleting population growth rate in France several years running.

Some skeptics, however, suggest waiting until the numbers come in on the related divorce rates before making conclusions. This is something worth considering in a country where over half of the marriages end in divorce, according to statistics from 2016.

While less than one percent of France’s marriages were between same sex couples, the numbers are surprising given the country’s intense reaction to the gay marriage law passed in May of 2013. Nearly 400,000 people took the streets of Paris to oppose the initial ruling in protests which eventually turned to violence as far-right demonstrators fought with police in the heart of the capital.

New Zealand mosque shootings: everything we know so far about the Christchurch attacks

Four people are in custody after 50 people were killed and 20 more were seriously injured in shootings at two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch.

New Zealand Police said there had been "multiple fatalities" following what they described as a "tragic series of events" in the Canterbury region on Friday.

What has happened in Christchurch?

Officers first responded to reports of shots fired in central Christchurch at about 1.40pm local time (12.40am GMT). 

Two shootings took place at two separate mosques in the city, one at Masjid Al Noor mosque on Deans Avenue and another at Masjid Mosque, Linwood Avenue.

Police said they also defused a number of improvised explosive devices found on vehicles after the shootings.

All schools and council buildings were put on lockdown and members of the public were told not to go outside. The lockdown has since been lifted.

Attack ‘streamed live’

New Zealand police have warned that "extremely distressing footage" exists relating to the shooting in Christchurch and have urged that it not be shared.

A video reportedly streamed live on Facebook showed a gunman filming himself firing at worshipers inside the Al Noor mosque.

Facebook later said they had removed the video and disabled the account. 

The suspects

Four people were taken into police custody following the attack. A white male dressed in camouflage, army-style clothing who identified himself as Brenton Tarrant filmed himself opening fire in the Al Noor mosque. 

Twenty-eight-year-old Australian Brenton Harrison Tarrant appeared in court on Saturday charged with murder over the attack. Police said more charges would follow.

Wearing handcuffs and a white prison shirt, the Australian-born former fitness instructor and self-professed fascist sat impassively as the judge read the charge against him.

He did not request bail and was taken into custody until his next court appearance scheduled for April 5.

Jacinda Ardern said: "This individual has travelled around the world with sporadic periods of time spent in New Zealand.

"They were not a resident of Christchurch, in fact they were currently based in Dunedin at the time of this event.

"Inquiries are ongoing to establish whether the other two who were arrested were directly involved with this incident.

"The forth person who was arrested yesterday was a member of the public who was in possession of a firearm, but with the intention of assisting police.

"They have since been released."

Tarrant  left a 74-page anti-immigrant manifesto in which he explained who he was and his reasoning for his actions. He said he considered it a terrorist attack.

Ms Ardern says the suspect held a Category A gun licence which enabled him to legally obtain semi-automatic weapons. She says the country’s gun laws will change in the wake of the attack.

Tarrant said he was of Scottish, Irish and English stock and moved to New Zealand temporarily to plan and train and then stayed there after deciding to conduct the attack.

“I have read the writings of Dylann Roof and many others, but only really took true inspiration from Knight Justiciar Breivik,” he wrote.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said: "I can confirm that the individual who was taken into custody I have been advised is an Australian-born citizen," he told reporters in Sydney.

"As family members with our New Zealand cousins today, we grieve, we are shocked, we are appalled, we are outraged, and we stand here and condemn absolutely the attack that occurred today by an extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist."

Tarrant appeared in court on Saturday on one count of murder and is remanded until April 5.

The victims

New Zealand’s Prime Minister has confirmed 49 people dead with another 20 seriously injured in today’s attacks.

Several of those killed or wounded in the shooting rampage were from the Middle East or South Asia, according to initial reports from several governments.

Jacinda Ardern said her government was working with consular officials from countries including "Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Malaysia," to deal with the aftermath of the attack.

The Bangladesh cricket team was arriving for Friday prayers when the shooting occurred but all members were safe, a team coach said.

Thirty-nine people remain in Christchurch Hospital, 11 of them in intensive care.

New Zealand’s ‘darkest day’

A solemn New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Friday the deadly mosque shootings in Christchurch had plunged the country into one of its "darkest days".

"Clearly, what has happened here is an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence," Ardern said in an address to a shocked nation.

"Many of those who will have been directly affected by this shooting may be migrants to New Zealand, they may even be refugees here," Ardern said.

"They have chosen to make New Zealand their home, and it is their home. They are us. The person who has perpetuated this violence against us is not."

"They should have been in a safe environment," she said.

Gun Law

Ardern reiterated her promise that gun laws would change in New Zealand, and said the firearms used in the mosque shootings appear to have been modified.

She said: "New Zealanders will question how someone can come into being in possession of weapons of this nature.

"The guns used in this case appear to have been modified. That’s a challenge police have been facing and a challenge we will look to address in changing laws."

Troy’s Day, South Alabama’s Brown, FAU’s Hanson garner Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I weekly honors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Troy University’s Hannah Day, South Alabama’s Devin Brown and Florida Atlantic’s Kylee Hanson were selected Louisville/Slugger NFCA Division I Player and Co-Pitchers of the Week, respectively, for contests played March 14-20.

Day, a native of Crestview, Fla., had a weekend to remember that attributed to her .812 (13-for-16) batting average, six home runs, 20 RBI, 12 runs and 2.125 slugging percentage over four games last week. In Troy’s three-game Sun Belt series at Appalachian State, she hit .857 (12-for-14) with three doubles, all six long balls, 19 RBI and 11 runs scored. The senior rightfielder reached base safely in her first 10 plate appearances and posted four-plus RBI in all three contests.

“I’m very honored to have received this recognition,” Day said. However, this would not have been possible without our coaches and each of my teammates doing their job. Our coaches prepared us with a game plan and we bought in and in the end it paid off.”

Following a 3-for-3, four-RBI outing in the opener, Day was 5-for-5, clubbing three home runs, registering two doubles, knocking in program-record nine runs and scoring five times. Her 16 total bases matched an NCAA single-game mark and her three dingers tied a school record. Day closed out her monstrous weekend, going 4-for-6 with a double, two more homers, six RBI and four runs scored.

“Hannah is one of those special players and competitors,” said head coach Beth Mullins. “She has worked hard to help her teammates and this program be successful. It is a huge honor for her and Troy softball that she has been recognized with this award.”

Highlighted by a perfect game, Brown went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 17 innings for the Jaguars last week. The senior righty struck out 11 of 15 batters against Louisiana-Monroe to become the second Jaguar to toss a perfect game.

“This is a really big honor for our team,” said Brown. “We played really well together last week, and we took a big step forward. This is a big moment for me, and I’m very happy about it.”

Brown, a sophomore from Mobile, Ala., preceded the perfecto with a one-hit shutout of the Warhawks, striking out seven and walking one in five innings. She also twirled a four-hit complete game against Southern Miss in which she struck out 10 and surrendered an unearned run in a 5-1 non-conference victory. For the week, she allowed five hits and held opponents to a .089 batting average.

“I’m really proud of Devin and her progression,” head coach Becky Clark said. “Last week, she was really efficient, which is one of the things we’ve been emphasizing in the bullpen. It was a great week for her, and I’m happy to see the work she’s been putting in pay off for her and her teammates.”

Hanson twirled three two-hit shutouts and struck out 23 in helping Florida Atlantic to three of its five wins and catapult them into the No. 23 ranking in this week’s USA Today/NFCA DI Top 25 Coaches Poll. It’s the program’s first ranking since 2004 and also the Owls’ first 3-0 conference start since 2008.

“It’s an honor,” said Hanson. “There has been a lot of hard work and preparation that the team has put into this season. It feels like everything is coming together.”

The junior from Jupiter, Fla. opened the week with an eight-inning gem against RV UCF. Hanson struck out a week-high nine batters. In a pair of shutouts at Conference USA foe Middle Tennessee, the right-handed hurler struck out six in the opener and closed out the series with eight. In the finale, the Conference USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year did not allow a runner into scoring position.

“We expected big things out of Kylee this season and she has lived up to those expectations,” said NFCA Hall of Famer and FAU head coach Joan Joyce. “This award is nice because it means that her hard work is being recognized.”

Canada grounds Boeing 737 MAX due to mystery ‘new data’ from crashes: What do we know so far?

Canada has announced a nationwide ban on Boeing 737 MAX flights in its airspace, citing “new data” linking two deadly crashes. Info from the US federal database revealed pilots have long been complaining about the plane’s issues.

In a statement to the press, Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced that the “new data” influencing the decision came from “validated satellite tracking,” and that it suggested similarities between the two crashes involving the new Boeing jet. Although the data was sufficient to justify shutting down Canadian airspace to all flights involving the commercial jet, the minister stressed it was too soon to draw any conclusions.

“This safety notice restricts commercial passenger flights from any air operator, both domestic and foreign, of the Boeing 737 Max 8 and 9 aircraft from arriving, departing, or overflying Canadian airspace,” Garneau said.

Around 40 of the aircrafts were in use throughout various Canadian fleets, which has led to canceled and delayed flights across the country in the wake of the ban.

Earlier in the week, Garneau had suggested that grounding the jets would be a “premature” decision, taking a stance similar to the US’ FAA which has still not taken any action against the American-made aircraft. Garneau did not specify precisely what the new details revealed, but investigations into the US federal database show that pilots had already leveled serious complaints about the aircraft.

‘Nose-diving’ complaints

According to a CNN report, two American pilots reported that they had experienced issues after engaging the Max 8’s autopilot system, including the plane unexpectedly dipping into a nose-dive. The autopilot had to be disengaged for the rest of the flight.

Both the Ethiopian Airlines and the Lion Air pilots reported similar “flight-control problems” to air traffic control shortly after take-off, adding to suspicions that the problem is intrinsic to the aircraft.

‘Criminally insufficient’ flight manual

Another report complained about the woeful inadequacy of the flight manual, describing it as “inadequate and almost criminally insufficient.” The same report said that it was “unconscionable” that pilots were being expected to fly the plane with insufficient training and limited information.

Sunday’s Ethiopian Airlines crash left 157 people dead, and followed another crash involving the same airplane model just a few months earlier in Indonesia which killed 189. While the crashes raised widespread concerns about the aircraft’s autopilot function, Boeing has repeatedly stated that the vessel is safe and airworthy.

Brunei set to introduce death by stoning for adultery and gay sex

Adultery and gay sex will be punishable by stoning to death and the limbs of convicted thieves will be amputated under a new law set to come into effect from next week in the tiny southeast Asian kingdom of Brunei. 

A new strict Sharia penal code is to be enforced from next Wednesday defying heavy criticism that has kept the brutal provisions on hold for the last four years. 

Homosexuality is already illegal in the former British protectorate, but now it will become a capital offence. The law only applies to Muslims and punishment will also be “witnessed by a group of Muslims.”

Human rights groups who have lobbied against the enshrining of “cruel and inhuman punishments” reacted with horror at the decision to plough ahead with the extreme aspects of the penal code.

Amnesty International demanded an “immediate halt” to plans for vicious punishments so “heinous” that they allowed for the amputation of children’s limbs.  

“The international community must urgently condemn Brunei’s move to put these cruel penalties into practice,” said Rachel Chhoa-Howard, Amnesty’s Brunei Researcher.

“To legalise such cruel and inhuman penalties is appalling of itself. Some of the potential ‘offences’ should not even be deemed crimes at all, including consensual sex between adults of the same gender,” she added.

The tiny, resource-rich sultanate has a population of just over 450,000 and is located on the island of Borneo, next to the more moderate Islamic nations of Indonesia and Malaysia. 

In comparison to its neighbours, Brunei has grown conservative in recent years, including banning the sale of alcohol and introducing stiff penalties for open and excessive Christmas celebrations, for fear that its Muslim population could be led astray. 

There was widespread international condemnation when Brunei first announced the roll-out of the Sharia penal code – an Islamic legal system which prescribes strict corporal punishments –  in 2014.

The implementation of the law has since been delayed as officials work out the practical details under heavy opposition from rights groups. 

A notice on Brunei’s Attorney General’s Chambers dated December 29 last year quietly announced that the provisions would take effect on April 3. 

However, a religious affairs ministry spokesman said on Wednesday that Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Brunei’s leader, was expected to make an announcement on that date about the enforcement of Sharia.

 “Only after the event we will know regarding the date of the implementation of the new laws,” he told AFP.

Everything You Need To Know About Weed (But Were Too Afraid To Ask)

With the countdown to cannabis legalization Wednesday, some novices may feel lost navigating the new world of government-sanctioned bud. Whether you’re a first-time user, coming back to cannabis after a hiatus, or looking for a refresher, experts say there are basics bud beginners need to know in order to achieve their best buzz.

The chemical “orchestra” of cannabis

Oyedeji Ayonrinde, a psychiatry professor at Queen’s University, says cannabis consists of hundreds of chemical substances, more than 100 of which are known as cannabinoids, which act on receptors in the body to alter a range of physiological processes.

Among this “orchestra” of cannabinoids, said Ayonrinde, there are two main soloists: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Ayonrinde said THC is the more psychoactive compound that creates the euphoria commonly associated with “the high,” while CBD is more “chill,” inducing a relaxing effect.

For new cannabis users, Ayonrinde recommends selecting a strain with less than 20 per cent THC. This may be represented on labels as a CBD-to-THC ratio, he said, and it’s important to know both numbers, because a higher potency of CBD can rein in the effects of THC.

As an analogy, he said to imagine THC being the accelerator of a car, and CBD as being the brakes. A three-to-one THC-to-CBD ratio would be your standard car; a 30-to-one ratio would be like a car with the brakes of a motorbike; a 300-to-one ratio would be like a car with bicycle brakes.

Start low, go slow

This is a common refrain among cannabis connoisseurs, but for Adolfo Gonzalez, co-founder of CannaReps, a Vancouver-based training program for dispensary workers, it serves as a mantra. His philosophy is to encourage users to start with the lowest possible dosage to achieve their desired high.

“To consume responsibly and to stop when you have enough, that’s the cornerstone of the teaching when it comes to safe and effective use, and that’s always where we start,” said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez said finding your “minimum effective dose,” while most often used in a medical context, has important benefits for recreational users. If a cannabis user keeps consuming past the point of getting high, said Gonzalez, their tolerance will go up, and it will take a higher dose — and therefore more money — to achieve the same effect the next time around.

Is it a sativa or an indica? In most cases, both

Ayonrinde said cannabis strains have traditionally been sorted into two categories: sativa and indica. Sativa plants tend to be associated with more cerebral effects, while indica strains were thought to produce more of a bodily sensation.

However, Ayonrinde said with the cross-breeding of cannabis plants, most of the strains on the market are not purely indica or sativa, but a hybrid. “If we look at for instance dogs, there may be breeds of dogs, but then with more and more cross-breeding … there may actually be more mongrels than thoroughbreds.”

This cross-breeding, however, has allowed for more potent strains of cannabis — some with THC levels tens of times higher than in decades past, said Ayonrinde.

For baby boomers who are reacquainting themselves with Mary Jane for the first time since their youth, he warned that weed may be stronger than they remember.

“This isn’t grandma or grandpa’s weed. This is very different,” he said. “If a person probably smoked casually 20 or 30 years ago, and tried to smoke heavily with some of the contemporary preparations of hybrids, they may find themselves quite surprised.”

Trust your nose, and your friends

If deciding between strains like blue dream, sour diesel and purple haze fills you with dread, Toronto-based cannabis educator Irie Selkirk recommended that novice users ask dispensary workers to help them pick out one or two samples.

But because varieties of cannabis can be as complex as the people who take them, she said friends with cannabis can provide unique insight into what strain best suits their needs.

If you still feel overwhelmed among a forest of bud, Gonzalez said your nose can be a good tool to help you sniff out the right strain.

“If your nose says ‘no,’ it’s probably not a good idea,” said Gonzalez. “When you smell something and you’re like, ‘Ah, that smells delicious. I would love to sleep in that,’ that’s your body telling you that cultivar (variety of plant) may be well suited to you.”

Get the right equipment

If you’re sparking up on Oct. 17, Selkirk said you can either buy a pre-rolled joint, or go to your “local cannabis artisan” to purchase a range of smoking implements, such as rolling papers, a bong or a pipe. She also recommended that cannabis newcomers invest in a grinder to break up loose bud, and a semi-automatic rolling machine if they’re struggling with their joint technique.

For those who want a more discreet method of consumption, she said using a vaporizer may be a good option, because they are less odious in terms of odours. Vaporizers can range in price between $50 and $300, she said.

Selkirk underscored the importance of storing cannabis in a cool, dry place in order to preserve its intoxicating properties. For parents of underage children, she said cannabis should be stored in a smell-proof bag with a combination lock, and be prepared to explain to their kids why it’s under lock and key.

If you’re too high, sniff a lemon

It won’t be legal to buy edibles or concentrates for about one more year, but you can make food or drinks using cannabis in your own home as long as you don’t use organic solvents to create concentrated products.

When cannabis is inhaled, the effects can be felt within a few minutes of dosing, and typically peak within about half an hour, according to Health Canada. However, with ingestible cannabis, like edibles and cannabis oils, the agency said the acute effects may be felt within half and hour and fours hours of consumption.

This lag in onset time is at the core of what Selkirk termed the “rookie move” of consuming cannabis: having a marijuana-infused treat, and taking more when you don’t feel anything, only to have the effects hit you all at once.

If you do get too high, or even green out — a state of discomfort characterized by nausea, anxiety or dizziness after consuming cannabis — Selkirk suggested finding a place to lie down, drinking a sugary beverage and smelling a tart lemon, a peppercorn or a clove, saying the strong scents can mitigate the effects of THC.

Ayonrinde said he did not know of any scientific studies to support the efficacy of these homemade remedies for cannabis overconsumption.

It may be necessary to seek medical help for those who are experiencing severe effects.

Stay safe, have fun

Ayonrinde emphasized that new and even experienced cannabis users should try to avoid mixing cannabis with other substances, including nicotine and alcohol.

He said stoners should also be aware of the potential harms of cannabis, which can include paranoia, an increased risk of psychosis among heavy users and those with a family history of mental disorder, as well the “well advertised risks” of driving while high.

While the legal age for consuming cannabis is at least 18 or 19, depending on the province, Ayonrinde said cannabis users under the age of 25 should take particular caution before sparking up, because their brains are still developing.

“Frequent, heavy use with a developing brain has a complete different risk profile to people with maturing brains,” he said. “If (young people) want their best brain, then they should have their best information regarding cannabis, too.”

The experts were unanimous in encouraging users to enjoy their high and all of the giggling, euphoria, deep sleep and therapeutic benefits that come with it.

“Cannabis enhances our experiences, and it enhances our senses,” said Selkirk. “Foods taste better, are more flavourful. Touch can be more stimulating. Conversations can be more complex… It turns on a light for a lot of people.”
