Alabama’s Rhoads Stadium to Host 2016 NPF Championship Series

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – National Pro Fastpitch announced today the 2016 Championship Series will be held at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala. and will take place August 19-23. Rhoads is the home field of the National Champion University of Alabama softball team and holds the prestigious honor of leading the nation in NCAA regular season attendance for the past nine consecutive years.

The previous award of the Championship Series was for a three-year stint, 2014-2016, and placed the league’s hallmark event at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. However, due to scheduling conflicts in the multi-purpose venue that required lead-time for converting the playing surface to a football field, the facility became unavailable for the desired dates of the 2016 NPF Championship.

“We were fortunate in 2015 to experience a record attendance for our Championship Series in only our second year in Alabama,”commented NPF Commissioner, Cheri Kempf. “Re-locating the venue just a short distance away in Tuscaloosa will allow us to capitalize on regional consistency with the Series. It also can not be understated, the beautiful facility that is Rhoads Stadium and the overwhelming support of local and regional fans for the sport of fastpitch softball.”

“The NPF Championship Series is a great opportunity for Tuscaloosa to host athletes and visitors from all over the world,”commented Jay Kasten, Director of Sports for Tuscaloosa Tourism & Sports. “The event will be an exciting time for the City and is expected to have a large economic impact on our community. We are proud to support such a great event and look forward to packing Rhoads Stadium.”

The NPF Championship has been held in four different locations since the league taking over complete operations of the Series in 2010. The 2010 and 2011 Series’were held in Sulphur, LA; 2012 and 2013 Series’in Rosemont, IL; and the most recent 2014 and 2015 Series’were held in Hoover, AL. The 2015 Hoover Series saw both single day attendance and overall attendance records broken.

“It is a consistent focus of the league to continue to build our Championship Series as an event, both in-venue and on television. Much of that challenge lies in finding great hosts for the event and venues that will build on, and compliment the extraordinary play you will see take place on the field. Tuscaloosa has exhibited a clear willingness to meet that challenge head on,”said Kempf. “College softball venues are on the fast track and the University of Alabama leads the way in all categories. I anticipate a special year for our Championship in 2016.”

Of the field of six affiliate NPF teams, only four qualify for the Championship Series. The top four finishers in regular season competition standings will make their way to Tuscaloosa in August. Last year’s champion, Chicago Bandits, captured the title for the third time in their twelve year history.

Former Alabama softball stars, Kelly Kretschman and Kelley Montalvo are currently under contract for the USSSA Pride and Akron Racers respectively, and both have participated in every Championship Series since beginning their NPF careers. Kretschman, the league’s oldest player at 35 years old, took home the league’s coveted Mizuno Player of the Year Award in 2015.

Ancillary events and a complete and detailed Championship Series Week schedule will be finalized and announced in January. Tickets will go on sale following the schedule being finalized.

The league is currently holding their annual Winter Meeting, through Friday, in Atlanta, Georgia, in conjunction with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Convention.

Israeli killings of Palestinians at Gaza protests last year may amount to war crimes – UN inquiry

The Israeli military may have committed war crimes in 2018 when 189 Palestinians were killed and 6,100 wounded at Gaza protests, a UN human rights inquiry has found.

Palestinian demonstrators “did not pose an imminent threat of death or serious injury to others when they were shot, nor were they directly participating in hostilities,” the panel’s report said on Thursday, citing confidential information about those responsible for the killings.

The commission said every use of live fire during the protests was unlawful, while also calling on Palestinians to cease the use of incendiary kites and balloons.

The UN report took into account hundreds of interviews with witnesses and victims, as well as medical records, photos, video and drone footage.

The independent panel wants the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet to pass the findings to the International Criminal Court.

Tel Aviv slammed the report, branding accusations a “theatre of the absurd.”

“No one can deny Israel the right of self-defence and the obligation to defend its citizens and borders from violent attack,” Acting Foreign Minister Israel Katz said.

A massive wave of protests known as the “Great march of the Return” started at the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip on March 30 and lasted until the end of 2018. Protesters called for an end to the siege imposed on Gaza by Israel and Egypt for over a decade.

Israeli authorities claimed they used force to proteсt the border from attacks by armed militants.

In June 2018, the United States quit the UN Human Rights Council, saying it was biased against Israel.

Mussolini drawn into row over whether to cut down Rome’s ‘Fascist’ pine trees

The legacy of Benito Mussolini has been drawn into a row over whether to cut down Rome’s ‘Fascist’ pine trees.

During recent storms, several trees crashed to the ground, killing a man and a teenage boy, injuring several people and crushing cars.

Public parks had to be closed because of toppled trees or those that were judged to be in danger of falling.

The mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, blamed the accidents on the age of the capital’s trees, saying that many of its distinctive umbrella pines were planted during the Fascist era.

“Many of the trees that fell down are 90 years old – they were planted by the Fascist regime and they are now reaching the end of their existence,” Ms Raggi, a member of the anti-establishment Five Star Movement, said.

That was dismissed as nonsense by Rachele Mussolini, a Right-wing politician and the granddaughter of Il Duce.

It was not the age of the trees but a chronic lack of pruning and maintenance that was to blame, said Ms Mussolini, a city councilor allied to the hard-Right Brothers of Italy party.

The umbrella pines planted by her grandfather during “the Ventennio” – the 20 years of Mussolini’s fascist rule – needed more care, not chainsaws, she said.

“The age of a tree does not, in itself, determine whether it might fall or needs to be cut down. There are many factors that influence a tree’s stability,” she wrote in a motion presented to Rome’s city council.

Trees were at risk because of “shoddy maintenance”, Ms Mussolini said.

She called for an urgent plan to find a solution for preserving the umbrella pines, which with their distinctive flat-topped foliage are a quintessential part of the Roman landscape.

She is not the only Mussolini descendant to have gone into politics. Alessandra Mussolini, her half-sister, is an MEP and served as an MP in Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party.

They are the daughters of Romano Mussolini, the son of the dictator, who renounced Fascism and became a jazz pianist.

More than 70 years after his death at the hands of partisans in northern Italy, there is still a small but vocal minority who defend Benito Mussolini.

They claim that although he plunged Italy into war with Britain and France and introduced race laws that persecuted Italy’s Jewish population, he accomplished many positive things, from draining marshy parts of the country and eliminating malaria to building model new towns.

Matteo Salvini, deputy prime minister and head of the hard-Right League party, has alluded to his admiration for Mussolini.

Last summer, he was criticised for using a phrase that was made popular by the dictator.

Responding to criticism that he was fomenting xenophobia with his anti-immigrant rhetoric, Mr Salvini wrote on Twitter: “Many enemies, much honour”.

The words he used in Italian – “Tanti nemici, tanto onore” – were almost identical to one of Mussolini’s phrase – “Molti nemici, molto onore”.

Last week he tweeted a quote by Ezra Pound, an American poet and Fascist sympathiser who moved to Italy in the 1920s, lauded Mussolini, ranted against Jews and expressed support for Hitler.

“If a man is not willing to take some risks for his own ideas, either his ideas are worthless or he is worthless,” Mr Salvini posted.

Pound was arrested by American forces on charges of treason at the end of the war and spent years in a psychiatric hospital.

Italy’s most prominent far-Right group, CasaPound, takes its name from the American.

But many Italians are deeply critical of Mussolini’s legacy. On Tuesday, two Italian cities revoked the honorary citizenship that had been granted to Il Duce in the 1920s.

The decision was taken by the city councils of Empoli, near Florence, and Bergamo, in the north of the country.

They are the latest in a long list of towns and cities to cancel honorary citizenship granted to the dictator, including Livorno and Pisa in Tuscany, Ravenna on the Adriatic coast, Turin and Mantua.

USSSA Pride to represent NPF in Italy

Kissimmee, Fla. — USSSA is returning to Italy this May. The Pride will arrive in Rome on May 1 to participate in a four-game exhibition series against the Italian Women’s National Team, while also running a few coaching clinics in the process.

USSSA has continuously strengthened their presence internationally on the baseball side, making its mark in the European baseball market and USSSA Fastpitch has been following suit to strengthen its own international ties.

Last August, USSSA sent six Pride players overseas to share their softball knowledge with young Italian softball players around Milan during three-day instructional clinics. The Pride players visited three separate professional Italian softball venues and focused on basic fundamentals, while also getting a taste for Italian culture.

USSSA Pride third baseman, Andrea Duran, was among the six Pride players who traveled to Italy this past August to not only participate in the clinics, but ultimately promote the sport of softball as well as the NPF in and around Milan.

“The clinics we hosted last August went really well,” said Duran. “I was impressed by the talent of the girls and I was even more blown away by their eagerness to learn. They were all very coachable and committed to work hard for us every day.”

Clinics this May during the Italian Tour will feature hands on experience with local Italian coaches since the young players will be in school. Coaches will be instructed on practice routines and warm-ups the Pride players use themselves to prepare for the NPF season and hopefully learn some new techniques to implement year-round.

The USSSA Pride Italian Tour will kick things off in Montegranaro and make their way to Parma, Verona and end their trip in Milan.

The full roster has not been released as of yet, but Megan Willis will take the role of coach against the Italian National Team, the same role Willis took during the Pride Fall Tour back in October.

“I think this trip to Italy is going to be amazing for everyone involved,” Willis said. “The softball games are expected to be hard fought contests, and the coaches’ clinics should be amazing with an overwhelming amount of information.”

The USSSA Pride’s four-game series against the Italian National Team will take place May 2-5.

Not only is the experience an exciting one for USSSA, the Italian National Team has a chance to get back together and play top competition in preparation for this summer’s World Cup. Eager to play against the best, the International Softball Federation has made the decision to pause their season so that their national team players can compete in this exhibition series.

This is not the first time NPF players have made their way abroad; many NPF players have chosen to extend their three-month NPF season by joining the Japan Softball League. The biggest difference, apart from location, is that the Pride will be representing USSSA as a team.

The tour in Italy provides the Pride with a chance to put their own pre-season work in and face the top ranked team in Europe before the NPF season starts in June. USSSA is following the trend many professional sports leagues have executed such as the MLB in Australia and the NFL in London. Following the tour, USSSA will be responsible for the NPF in Italy.

Megan Willis, who has hosted a few clinics in France is no stranger to the European softball scene and hopes to strengthen USSSA’a relationship with European teams and players.

“It’s my hope that bringing the Pride to Italy will not only showcase our team’s talent, but also introduce the NPF” said Willis. “One reason baseball has been able to grow as a sport in Europe is with the help of MLB players. Being able to have that title and educate young athletes as well as coaches is huge.”

Andrea Duran also brings a perspective few can to the international game, participating in the 2008 Olympic games not to mention several World Cup Championships.

“I think it could be a very positive experience that brings us all closer,” said Duran “It is also a great opportunity to represent USSSA and to give back to the sport. The games in May are hopefully just the stepping stones to an even greater future in Europe that I am so grateful I got to be a part of.”

Man pepper sprays woman for refusing to wear hijab in Iran (VIDEO)

Video of an Iranian man apparently pepper spraying a woman following an altercation about her not wearing the hijab has been spreading on social media.

The video was shared on Instagram by Iranian activist and Voice of America journalist Masih Alinejad, who started the My Stealthy Freedom and White Wednesday campaigns to promote Iranian women defying the country’s modesty rules.

The video shows a man walking away from a woman who is shouting at him. The woman, who isn’t visible on camera, then follows the man as he walks away and they argue.

The man then turns around and walks back towards the woman, taking a canister out of his bag. It appears to be pepper spray and he holds it up near the woman’s face. The sound of it being sprayed can then be heard as the camera shakes and the video cuts out.

“This pro-regime man attacked me with tear gas for not wearing hijab,” the woman who filmed the video told Alinejad. “In Iran I face this violence every day but this is the first time I joined #MyCameraIsMyWeapon movement to protest, as a result many people came to support me.”

The man reportedly told the woman her scarf had slipped, and when she didn’t replace it, he objected. She alleges he also broke her glasses and a crowd gathered as their altercation unfolded.

Alinejad shared the video online, saying it was the second such incident flagged with the #MyCameraisaWeapon campaign, in which Iranian women film any altercations they get into with police or fellow Iranians for not wearing the compulsory hijab.

Italy faces olive oil crisis as climate change and disease cuts harvest by a record 57%

Italy faces the indignity of importing large quantities of foreign olive oil after a combination of climate change, disease and insect pests reduced its production of homegrown oil by a record 57%.

Unusual spring frosts, extreme summer drought and a rainy autumn – all phenomena blamed on climate change by scientists – played havoc with last year’s olive harvest.

The situation is so dire that the country is on course to run out of homegrown olive oil by April, after which it will have to depend on imports from countries such as Spain, Greece, Turkey and Tunisia.

Last year’s unusual weather inflicted an estimated €1bn worth of damage on the olive oil sector, according to Coldiretti, the national farmers’ association.

The 57% reduction in production was the worst for 25 years and threatens “tens of thousands of businesses, above all in the south,” Coldiretti said.

Olive trees have been hit hard not just by wild weather but also infestations of a species of fly that burrows into olives and lays its eggs, rendering the fruit useless.

The third major factor to have hammered the sector is a bacterium, Xylella fastidiosa, which broke out in the southern region of Puglia and has killed hundreds of thousands of olive trees there.

It is believed to have been accidentally introduced in exotic plants imported from Costa Rica several years ago. The bacterium is spread by an insect called the meadow spittlebug.

Efforts to contain it have proved unsuccessful and the bacterium is spreading “inexorably” north, the agricultural association said.

Before it was struck by the blight, Puglia produced around half of all Italy’s olive oil.

The oil sector is facing a “crisis without precedent” and tens of thousands of jobs have been lost, Coldiretti said.

Emergency funds from the national government are urgently needed if Italy is to avoid being “condemned to irrelevance” in the olive oil business, Ettore Prandini, the president of the association said.

Investment should be made and new trees planted. The olive oil sector is worth €3bn to the Italian economy, with the country supporting around 200 million olive trees, some of them centuries old.

Italy boasts more than 500 different olive varieties, “the biggest treasure of biodiversity” in the oil-producing world, said Coldiretti.

The dearth of homegrown oil will tempt some producers to supplement their supplies with foreign oil and try to pass it off as 100% Italian, the association warned.

Consumers need to check labels carefully to make sure the “Italian” olive oil they are buying really is Italian, rather than a blend containing oil from other countries.

Idris Elba Walks Golden Globes Red Carpet With Daughter And Canadian Fiancée Sabrina Dhowre

Idris Elba has plenty of reasons to smile at the 2019 Golden Globes. For one, his daughter Isan Elba — who just turned 17 — is the Golden Globes Ambassador, and for another, well, he’s celebrating his presenting duties on the red carpet with his Canadian fiancée Sabrina Dhowre.

Idris, Isan and Sabrina all arrived at the Globes together Sunday night in Beverly Hills, Calif., and posed together like a proud, happy family. Idris looked suave and sharp in his emerald green suit designed by Ozwald Boateng, a British designer of Ghanaian descent. Sabrina donned a black gown with a white and coral micro-floral bodice with spaghetti straps, while Isan also wore a mostly-black ensemble, with shimmering blue, silver and fuchsia sequinned details.

This marks the first time Idris has had both Sabrina and Isan with him at the Globes, and the trio kicked off E!’s red carpet coverage.

Speaking to Ryan Seacrest about his daughter’s big role at the ceremony, Idris said, “I can’t help but be a dad. I’ll just try to be cool.”

“I told her to keep her back straight, elegance is presence, smile and nod politely even if you can’t understand what anyone’s saying,” said Idris. “If you feel like you’re going to pass out … don’t.”

Watch: Isan Elba is so excited for her Golden Globes debut. Story continues below.

And Sabrina could teach Isan a few things about perfecting her stage presence as well.

Sabrina, an actress, model and 2014 Miss Vancouver, has been linked to Elba since 2017. The couple first met while Idris was filming the survival movie “The Mountain Between Us” with Kate Winslet in Sabrina’s hometown, and they got engaged last February. Idris has a soft spot for the city, telling reporters in September of 2017 that he “had a great time in Vancouver, I love it,” before adding, “The air was really good.”

Keeping with the family affair spirit, Sabrina also posted a good luck message to Isan on her Instastory, writing, “at the globes, kill it Isan Elba.”

Idris posted a tribute of his own before the big show.

Isan will be on-stage with co-hosts Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh all night long, as she assists with doling out the Golden Globe statuettes and escorting the presenters and winners following their speeches. And one thing is clear; her cheering section will be loud, proud and partly Canadian.
