Aziz Ansari's Comeback Tour Will Bring Him To Toronto, London And Kitchener

Aziz Ansari’s new comedy tour is bringing him to three Canadian cities at the end of this month: Toronto, London and Kitchener. A second show was added at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall (capacity 2,630) after the first one sold out.

Ansari has largely retreated from public life since January, when a story made the rounds online about a woman who says the comedian tried to pressure her into sex after a date. He responded with a statement saying he thought what had happened between them “by all indications was completely consensual,” and added that when she texted him the next to day to say she was uncomfortable, he was “surprised and concerned,” and that he “responded privately.”

The incident quickly became a lightning rod. There was a lot to unpack about how certain behaviours may come across as coercive even if they weren’t intended that way, and about the level of respect due even to casual sex partners. But instead of engaging with those ideas, the public conversation devolved almost immediately to accusations that #MeToo had gone too far, with institutions like the New York Times and The Atlantic publishing defences of the comedian with titles like “The Humiliation of Aziz Ansari” and “Aziz Ansari is Guilty. Of Not Being a Mind Reader.”

There’s clearly a significant segment of Ansari’s fan base who are eager for his comeback, as the sold-out shows indicate. (He also sold out venues in D.C. and Rochester, New York.) But not everyone is so quick to welcome him back. Facebook arguments have broken out on the event pages advertising both of his Toronto shows. Cosmo published “a debate” between two women, one who said she would see the show and one who wouldn’t.

By several accounts, Ansari doesn’t address the controversy in his new show. Vulture writer Ryan Glasspiegel, who attended a show in Milwaukee in August, wrote that “his material in this post-#MeToo context was more or less what it looked like before.”

One particularity new to this tour is that none of it will be captured on video — or even in an Instagram photo. Everyone attending the show will have to lock up their phone in a “mobile phone pouch with a proprietary lock” made by a startup called Yondr. Anyone caught with a phone in the venue itself will be thrown out.

“We appreciate your cooperation in creating a phone-free viewing experience,” the event description adds.

And there’s another significant change to Ansari’s material, according to Eren Orbey, a writer for the New Yorker. After attending an Ansari show in New Haven in October, Orbey was surprised to note that one of the comedian’s main targets was “wokeness.” The role he had previously built for himself in the comedy world was that of the feminist ally — Orbey points out that Ansari had riffed on “creepy guys” in previous comedy routines, and credited a girlfriend with helping him discover feminism.

But in his new set, Ansari’s “amused but progressive spirit” has now “crusted into suspicion about wokeness and its excesses,” Orbey wrote. He says it’s this “apparent hypocrisy” that might make it hard for some people to accept his comeback.

“One might have hoped that, nearly a year later, he could find a way to reckon with one of the movement’s messiest lessons: that even men who wish to serve as allies of women can, intentionally or not, hurt them in private.”

NCAA Rules Committee Approves Use of In-Game Video

Starting next season, softball teams will be able to review video and access information entered into electronic equipment during competition.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved the proposal from the NCAA Softball Rules Committee on Thursday. The new rule allows in-game use of video and statistical technology in the dugouts and other team areas as long as the equipment is not brought onto the playing field during an inning or used to review or challenge an umpire’s decision.

Additionally, tournament hosts will be allowed to film and stream all games within their tournament, not just those in which they are participants.

“The move to allow more freedom with the use of technology in the dugout is really consistent with the culture,” said Susan Cassidy-Lyke, chair of the Softball Rules Committee and athletics director and softball coach at Molloy College. “The sophistication of today’s technology and the expertise of the users simply make it a valuable strategic asset. Allowing access to the information will enhance the game while eliminating the burden of enforcement.”

The panel approved a proposal prohibiting players from wearing batting helmets that have highly reflective or mirror-like chrome finishes. The Softball Rules Committee believes these types of batting helmets are distracting to the defense because of the reflection of light.

Other softball rules (pdf) proposals approved by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel include:

 • A defensive player cannot block a base without having possession of the ball or being in the act of catching a thrown ball.
 • Dugouts must have protective netting or fencing extending at least 6 feet from the floor; this rule will be a requirement in 2018.
 • Foul poles should be a single color and extend at least 10 feet, but preferably 20 feet, from the ground. However, in 2018, foul poles on a team’s campus playing field will be required to extend at least 10 feet and be painted either white or optic orange.
 • When teams are playing on a non-regulation field such as in a dome or multi-use facility due to weather constraints, the home run fence must be a minimum of 190 feet down the lines and 220 feet to center field with a 6-foot-high fence. The home run fence can also be 210 feet down the lines and 230 feet to center with a 4-foot-high fence. If the fences are shorter, a batter hitting a fair ball clearing the fence will be awarded only a ground-rule double.
 • A runner’s lane will no longer be required to be painted on the field between home plate and first base.
 • Players cannot use a bat with a barrel that is yellow or non-contrasting to the ball.
 • A “no pitch” will be called if a batter is hit by a pitch while being out of the front of the batter’s box.
 • If a pitch is intentionally thrown at an umpire, the pitcher, catcher and head coach of that team are immediately ejected. In addition, the coach will be suspended from the institution’s next two games.
 • Base runners are prohibited from sliding out of the baseline directly into a fielder. In these instances, the base runner will be declared out.
 • Coaches and players may not question the strike zone or any call based purely on the umpire’s judgment. Questioning will result in a warning, and any subsequent violations can result in ejection.

Additionally, one rule passed in 2011 will be a requirement in 2016: Backstops made of wood, cement or brick must be padded.

100+ warships in 3 seas: Turkey flexes military muscle with largest naval drill in its history

Turkey is conducting an unprecedented three-sea naval drill, the largest in its history. This is also the first time Turkish air and ground forces have taken part in a military exercise on this scale.

The four-day Mavi Vatan (“Blue Homeland”) 2019 drill, involving 103 navy ships, began on Wednesday in the Black Sea, Aegean Sea, and the eastern Mediterranean simultaneously, giving Turkey a chance to show off its recently-upgraded fleet, which includes over a dozen assault boats and frigates in addition to corvettes, mine hunting boats, patrol boats, and submarines. Turkish-made Bayraktar and ANKA drones and jet fighters will also participate. The drill was planned six months ago, in accordance with NATO regulations.

Erdogan says Turkey does not want a dime from the IMF

Nothing at all can be done in the Mediterranean without Turkey,” Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced last week. “We will not allow that,” he emphasized, reporting that Turkey would begin drilling for oil and gas near Cyprus with two new exploration ships.

Large gas fields were recently discovered in a disputed area of the eastern Mediterranean, off the coast of Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus.

The move is expected to inflame regional tensions with Greece. In addition to the ongoing dispute in Cyprus, Athens and Ankara have also butted heads over the ownership of a group of islands in the Aegean – reviving a 20-year-old dispute – and a contested 10-mile strip of airspace, creating a sticky situation for NATO.

Turkey also irked the alliance by announcing on Tuesday it had signed a deal to purchase S-400 missile defense systems from Russia, despite US efforts to persuade them to buy American-made Patriots instead. The persuasion attempts reportedly extended to threats of sanctions, as well as warnings the Russian system was incompatible with NATO’s existing missile defense systems.

When Should the PS5 Launch?

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the PS4’s latest sales numbers from the holiday 2018 season. Over 5.6 million PS4 and PS4 Pro units were sold over the holiday season, bringing the PS4 to over 90 million units sold worldwide, with strong software sales also boosting the platform’s 2018 success.

And yet, at the same time, discussion of the PS5 has already begun — when will Sony formally announce the PS4 successor, what games will be released for it, and when will the system itself be released? Even with several huge titles like The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, and Death Stranding yet to be released, many are already looking beyond the PS4.

For more of our thoughts on whether we feel like we need the PS5, check out the latest episode of our weekly PlayStation show, Beyond!, below.

But is it in Sony’s best interest to cannibalize its own current success? Below, we take a look at both sides of the argument for debuting the PS5 as soon as possible versus taking time to allow the PS4 to go out on a high note.

Why Sony Should Release the PS5 Soon

Sony’s sales success is definitely notable, but it’s also worth pointing out that this still represents a year-over-year downward trend in sales. The PS4 sold 5.6 million units during this holiday season, while it sold 5.9 million in 2017 during the same period, and 6.2 million in 2016 at that same point.

A similar downturn in 2019’s holiday season is likely, one that could be larger given what games are released this fall. Sony has yet to date any of its anticipated exclusives for the fall, and while something like Call of Duty is a given, it’s unclear what Star Wars games EA could have, while there’s nothing quite like Red Dead Redemption 2 launching this year that we know of.

Microsoft and Sony's Next-Gen Consoles

2018 brought with it the first real rumblings of Microsoft and Sony's plans for next-generation consoles. While both companies have acknowledged the existence of new hardware, the details and potential release dates are still heavily rumored.

Microsoft first officially mentioned its work on a new Xbox (or Xboxes) during its E3 2018 press conference, when Phil Spencer said it was "deep into architecting the next Xbox consoles, where we will once again deliver on our commitment to deliver the benchmark of console gaming." Shortly after, a report published by Thurrott claimed Microsoft's next-gen plans include a "series of devices," code-named "Scarlett," that are expected to launch in 2020.

A subsequent report by Thurott, published in July, expanded on the Scarlett rumors. According to the report, Microsoft will release two consoles in 2020: a traditional piece of next-gen hardware and a cheaper, streaming-focused box.

Rumors about Sony's next-gen console, meanwhile, have been more scarce. The company's CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida, told the Financial Times next-generation hardware is "necessary," though he didn't comment on a potential name or any further details for what will likely become PlayStation 5. The FT report, however, claims Sony's next console "might not represent a major departure from the PS4, and that the fundamental architecture would be similar."

Considering these rumors, and given the fact that November will mark PlayStation 4 and Xbox One's sixth year on the market, it's not too farfetched to believe we may get our first look at the ninth generation of consoles in 2019.”,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2019/01/08/next-gen-1546961028863.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2019/01/08/next-gen-1546961028863_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”Big Video Game Rumors Going Into 2019″,”relativePosition”:”01″,”albumTotalCount”:10},{“caption”:”Nintendo Is Working on an Updated Switch

While the studio was long-rumored to be working on a Superman game, it shot down that speculation in late November, saying plainly its next game was "not Superman." With that rumor deflated, we're once again left without any clues as to what's next for Rocksteady.

Fans are eagerly awaiting more news on another long-rumored 2K Games sequel, Borderlands 3. While confirmation of its existence came in 2016, developer Gearbox has yet to formally announce a title or reveal any official details about the next Borderlands.

At GDC 2017, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford showed off an early tech demo of the next Borderlands in Unreal Engine 4. However, as Pitchford stressed at the time, this was simply a tech demo and "not a video game." Six months later, Pitchford said 90% of Gearbox's development team was "working on the thing I think most of you guys want us to be working on," which many took to mean Borderlands 3.

Sony is also looking to have a quiet 2019 publicly, at least as of now. The company skipped PSX at the end of 2018 and announced it’s also not going to E3 2019. Without these major promotional opportunities, and its unreleased exclusives unknown quantities when it comes to release dates, focusing on PS5 in 2019, with even a surprise release this fall, could be a great way to keep Sony in the conversation if its biggest releases aren’t until next year.

Unbeholden to E3, Sony can essentially hold a PS5 announcement event whenever they feel ready or want to react to their competition. Starting that conversation in early 2019 in an official capacity will keep PlayStation looking strong on both fronts — the company not only has major releases for PS4 yet to debut, but already has a clear plan for the PS5 with that sort of showing.

And of course, Sony has to take into consideration what its direct competitor, Microsoft, is doing with the next Xbox. Microsoft has already made it clear the company intends to start discussing the Xbox One’s successor soon, and its buying up of many studios in 2018 felt like the clear start of an exclusives arms race for the next generation.

By starting discussion of next gen in 2019, Sony can position itself as leading that conversation rather than responding to it.

Why Sony Should Hold Off on PS5

Yes, Sony’s sales numbers represent a downtrend year over year, but that’s hardly a surprise in the sixth holiday season in a console’s life. The PS4 is still clearly selling well enough, and owners are hungry for its exclusives, with Spider-Man selling nine million copies since its launch in September.

While the announced exclusive lineup for 2019 is relatively light compared to Spidey and God of War last year (with Shadow of the Colossus and Detroit: Become Human also debuting in 2018), Sony still has three giant exclusives in TLOU Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, and Death Stranding, left to debut before the PS5. Jumping the gun on the PS5, when those titles still need time in the spotlight, could hurt the tail-end of the PS4’s life cycle. If Sony, say, held an event early this year to announce its new console for 2020, why would anyone really want to buy a PS4 this holiday?

Announcing too early could hurt what life the PS4 has left in it, and there definitely seems to be some clear life based on its sales success. Its downward trend has been consistent over the last few years, with no huge disruption year over year in the holidays.

And, if Microsoft spends its E3 announcing plans for next gen, Sony could easily wait until all that info is out there to respond in kind whenever they please.

Should both console makers be looking to launch in 2020, particularly in the fall as they often have, holding an announcement for that same year, or close to it, could prove to be as successful as the PS4’s announcement. Announced in February and released in November, Sony spent all of 2013 really focusing on promoting its new console. To start promoting it this year, without plans to be at one of the biggest stages in gaming, could not just dampen anticipation for PS4 and PSVR titles to come but stretch the enthusiasm of fans leading into 2020 PS5 launch.

Should Microsoft really start to hit on the next Xbox in 2019, PlayStation can’t completely stay out of the spotlight. But with such a stable of anticipated PS4 titles left, Sony doesn’t need to dip into the PS5 well just yet. Even if sales are taking natural downturns, it’s not necessarily representative that people are clamoring for a new console just yet.

IGN’s own Brian Altano presented the idea on Twitter about whether we’re really in need for a PS5 just yet, and, for the most part, people seem quite happy with the current gen as is. The mid-generation console steps with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X represented a shift — we’re not nearly clamoring for as big of a technical jump because we’ve already seen one.

Looking at past trends in console life cycles, 2020 seems like the best bet to both announce in heavy detail, and release the next generation of consoles, on both Sony and Microsoft’s fronts. That doesn’t mean we’ll hear nothing about that generation this year, especially if surprise spring launches are in the works, but after such a strong fall for hardware, software, and PSVR, bringing PS5 into the conversation could hurt whatever momentum the PS4 has left in it.

Missouri softball’s pinch runner keeps Bulgaria, adoption in her heart

COLUMBIA, Mo. — In a rundown Bulgarian town, Raime Cohen eagerly waited inside what she called the “Kids’ House” for the promise of a new future.

An American couple pulled up to the orphanage where Cohen had lived since her biological parents gave her up shortly after birth. They were back after visiting six months earlier.

Cohen, 3, greeted them with a big smile and warm embrace. Days later, they all left together for a trip to the United States.

It was November 1999.

“Everything was like a new adventure,” Cohen remembered.

She is now on the Missouri softball team. Despite never being recruited by the program, she impressed coach Ehren Earleywine enough in a rare tryout to secure a spot on the squad.

She joins the Tigers, ranked No. 15 in the preseason USA Today poll, on a quest to win the program’s first national championship.

“If we do win the World Series, or even if we don’t win the World Series, winning games and being one of the top SEC teams is just exciting,” Cohen said. “I don’t care if I’m the main reason. It’s just being a part of it.”

‘This girl is for you’

Alan Cohen and his then-wife, Lorraine, wanted to adopt a child from out of the country.

Not knowing where to begin, he contacted a friend, an attorney who specialized in international adoption. Alan Cohen became the first person to use a new program for Bulgaria.

Through the program, his attorney had access to videos of eligible children.

“This girl is for you,” he told Alan Cohen after watching just the first video.

The couple agreed and started the adoption process later that day.

“Cutest little thing you ever saw,” Alan Cohen said. “She had an amazing resemblance to my family. Her baby picture looked like my sister’s baby picture.”

Later that year, he and his wife traveled halfway across the world to Bulgaria, a nation in Eastern Europe. Their destination was an orphanage located a four-hour drive away from the capital city of Sofia.

During the trip, they passed parts of Bulgaria that were in shambles, Alan Cohen said. The buildings were outdated and crumbling. One block away from the orphanage, he caught a whiff of the worst smell — one you couldn’t even imagine, he said.

The couple arrived at the orphanage, where about 30 children lived at any given time with a team of caretakers. It was a concrete bunker — the nicest building in the entire town, Alan Cohen said.

They got to see Raime Cohen for the first time. There was an instant connection.

Caretakers at the orphanage told Raime Cohen that Alan Cohen and his wife were her real parents who were coming back to see her and eventually take her home.

The couple flew back to St. Louis ready to adopt, but they were forced to wait through an arduous adoption process.

Six months later, they were back to take Raime Cohen home with them. When they arrived this time, she recognized them. Raime Cohen was all smiles.

“She put her hands out and said, ‘Let’s go,’” Alan Cohen said. “She couldn’t speak English, of course, but she was all ready to go.”

Their trip to the airport in Sofia was Raime Cohen’s first time in a car, she said.

“This is so cool,” Raime Cohen remembered. “I was never really outside of the ‘Kids’ House.’”

“The first thing I wanted when they asked was chocolate and chicken,” she said. Her adoptive parents obliged.

From then on, they became Mom and Dad.

Learning to run

It didn’t take long for Raime Cohen’s new parents to notice she loved sports.

On playgrounds in St. Louis, her parents taught her how to run. There had never been much space for organized games while in the orphanage. Now, she could roam free.

By elementary school, she was playing baseball with the boys.

“She was always a super athlete,” Alan Cohen said. “She preferred team sports because she liked being with other girls and boys.”

Raime Cohen went on to play basketball, soccer and lacrosse. She eventually started playing tennis, but it wasn’t her favorite because she competed by herself. Her desire to be on a team stretches back to her time in the orphanage, she said.

“I was kind of like an older sibling in the orphanage,” she said. “I took care of other kids in the orphanage. These other kids’ lives mattered just as much as mine.”

During her teenage years, Raime Cohen switched her focus to softball. She played for Clayton High School and also was on a club team.

“I fell in love with the sport,” she said. “Throwing, hitting, the environment … I enjoyed everything about it.”

She dreamed of playing college softball, even at a Division II or III level.

“If I can compete with Division I pitchers, I can probably play at a college level,” she remembered thinking.

Raime Cohen’s father and stepbrother both graduated from MU, and she wanted to follow in their footsteps. But the Tigers hadn’t recruited her. A collegiate playing career might not be in the cards.

She looked at other schools, but none of them jived with her academic ambitions. She chose MU for its broadcast journalism program.

The summer before the fall semester of her freshman year, Raime Cohen reached out to Earleywine to request a tryout. She had to at least try, she said.

“We don’t do tryouts, but you can send me a video of yourself running,” Earleywine said at the time.

“Alright, I’ll do that,” Raime Cohen responded. She sent him a video of herself running.

“OK, looks good,” he said. “Let’s meet.”

The two got together the week before classes began. They clicked right away, Raime Cohen said.

Just like that, Earleywine offered her a roster spot.

“I want you to be a pinch runner,” he told her.

“He told me straight up, ‘This is what I’m looking for you to do,’” she said.

Taken by surprise but still thrilled by the opportunity, Raime Cohen accepted the offer.

“I’m thankful he gave me any kind of role,” she said. “I was expecting, ‘OK, you can be on the team, but I don’t know if you’re going to do anything.’”

In collegiate softball, a player can pinch run for any teammate for the duration of a game. Unlike baseball, a pinch runner can re-enter a game more than once, and the player she’s pinch-running for can still bat and play defense. It gives the Tigers a speed advantage like the Kansas City Royals, Raime Cohen said.

“I’m actually not 100 percent sure how it works,” the freshman admitted. “I get confused with the rules. When coach tells me to come in and run, I’m like, ‘Alright, OK.’”

During practices, Raime Cohen runs bases almost the whole time.

“Coach is really big into baserunning, so there are some practices that are specific for baserunning,” she said. “First to third. Working on sliding. Stuff like that.”

Raime Cohen said it’s surreal to be on a Southeastern Conference team. She knows her role in the Missouri program and intends to thrive in it. What starts as a pinch runner position might expand over time.

For now, she’s content just being on the team.

Looking back

More than 16 years have passed since Raime Cohen’s final day in the orphanage. She said she often reflects on her experiences in Bulgaria.

“I don’t even know what I would have been doing right now,” she said. “And I don’t even know if I want to think about what it would’ve been. It wouldn’t have been a great future.”

Raime Cohen doesn’t go out of her way to share her background with Missouri teammates. Lots of them know part of the story but not “the ins and outs of it,” she said.

But those closest to her know how her time in Bulgaria shaped who she is today.

“I couldn’t be more proud or excited,” Alan Cohen said. “To watch my daughter play for the team I root for, my alma mater, that’s just too much. That’s more than I could ever ask for. She lights up my life.”

Raime Cohen said if she wasn’t adopted then, she might not ever have been. Her orphanage had been on the verge of shutting down.

“I wouldn’t have been given all these opportunities in Bulgaria,” Raime Cohen said. “My life is pretty privileged. I’m just thankful.”

Her life story gives her big perspective.

“I learned at an early age that I wasn’t the center of the universe,” Raime Cohen said. “I was lucky to be adopted.”

Pope labels child abusing clergy ‘tools of Satan’, calls for ‘all out battle’

Just a day after one of the Catholic Church’s most prominent cardinals admitted that child sex abuse files were either destroyed or never created Pope Francis has branded clergy who abuse children “tools of Satan.”

Speaking at the end of a historic Vatican conference on clerical sex abuse the Pope called for an “all-out battle” on the crime that should be “erased from the face of the Earth.”

Using fiery rhetoric, Pope Francis said that even a single case of abuse is an “atrocity” and vowed that the Church will protect children from the “ravenous wolves.”

He described the hearts of some clergy as having been “dulled by hypocrisy and power” and promised to bring abusers to justice.

He outlined that the National Bishops Conferences guidelines on clerical sexual abuse will be reviewed and bolstered and the Church’s definition of a ‘minor’ will be raised from the current age of 14 years to “expand protection” for children.

The Pope went on to argue that the “vast majority” of priests are good and also dedicated a significant chunk of the beginning of the speech to demonstrate that most child sex abuse takes place in families.

The four-day summit was attended by 114 bishops from all over the world. On Saturday Cardinal Reinhard Marx revealed to the gathering that predator priests were able to continue abusing children because files on their crimes were either destroyed or never existed.

As part of an admission that the rights of victims were “effectively trampled underfoot,” Marx said that “procedures and processes” that could have led to successful prosecutions were “deliberately not complied with.”

The landmark conference comes following several fresh abuse scandals in Chile, Germany, and the US state of Pennsylvania. Recent investigations revealed that abusers were frequently moved to other parishes and their crimes were hushed up to preserve the Church’s reputation.

Gaffin, Nunn earn Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I weekly honors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Tennessee’s Rainey Gaffin and USF’s Erica Nunn were selected Louisville/Slugger NFCA Division I Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, announced the Association on Tuesday afternoon.

Gaffin had a dominant week at the plate helping Tennessee stay undefeated at home (17-0) with four wins last week, including a three-game SEC sweep of then No. 11 Texas A&M. The senior posted a team-best eight RBI and 1.077 slugging percentage and registered a pair of three-hit contests against the Aggies. In addition, she chipped in at the plate, batting .545 (6-for-11) with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored.

“It’s such an honor to be chosen for this award and I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and coaches. There are so many great players in college softball and I’m just grateful to be considered among the best players in the country.”

The Thornton, Colo. native recorded a base knock in all four games with her biggest output of the week coming in game two of the series. She clubbed a grand slam and knocked in a career-high six runs in the series-clinching win. Gaffin also showcased her arm, picking up two wins with 14 strikeouts in 11 innings of work, including eight punchouts on Friday night against the Aggies.

“Rainey made a real effort last week to work on her approach at the plate and her mindset going into each at-bat,” said co-head coach Karen Weekly. “This award is a credit to her effort and staying committed to the process.”

Nunn, who improved to 20-6 on the season, was a perfect 4-0 over the week with two shutouts and 29 strikeouts. Posting a 0.32 ERA and a .188 opponent’s batting average, the senior southpaw allowed just one earned run and 15 hits over 22 innings of work.

“I’m thankful for this honor and to have this last season with my team,” Nunn said. “Coach Jessica Moore has helped me with my confidence in the circle and attacking hitters. My defense has continued to make great plays behind me to keep us in the ballgame.”

A native of Apex, N.C., Nunn recorded a week-high 11 strikeouts en route to a complete-game shutout in game two of an American Athletic Conference series against UConn. She opened the week with a two-hit blanking of Bethune-Cookman in which she fanned eight and did not walk a batter. In the other two contests against the Huskies, Nunn struck out six in a five-inning complete game and closed out the series by shutting out UConn over the final three innings to pick up her final win of the week in relief.

“It’s nice to see that Erica is getting national recognition,” said head coach Ken Eriksen. “She’s one of the main reasons why we are having such a successful year. The biggest difference this year for Erica has been her pitching coach, Jessica Moore. Jess has helped her mature not only in the circle but on the field as well.”

South Africa to downgrade status of its embassy in Israel once ‘modalities’ are finalized

Concerned with Israeli treatment of Palestinians and the lack of willingness to negotiate a two-state solution, the South African President announced that he remains committed to downgrading his country’s embassy in Tel Aviv.

“We are clear on our support for the achievement of the Palestinian state, alongside the right of the state of Israel to exist in peace and security with its neighbors,” Cyril Ramaphosa told the parliament this week, urging the government to implement South Africa’s ruling party’s 2017 resolution which called for downgrading the country’s embassy in Israel to the status of a liaison office, because of the “continued Israeli violations of the rights of Palestinians.”

A few weeks after Donald Trump’s White House recognized Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel and instructed the State Department to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to the Holy City, the African National Congress, under the leadership of former president Jacob Zuma, passed a resolution to show “support to the oppressed people of Palestine,” stressing that the two-state solution is the only way out of the Israeli-Palestinian crisis.

Israeli-South African diplomatic ties have been something of a love-hate relationship over the last seven decades. After South Africa become one of the first nations to recognize Israel in 1948, its ties with the Jewish state flourished under its white-minority rule. However, following the collapse of the notorious apartheid political system, which discriminated against the black majority, the country began to lean towards support of Palestinians, staging demonstrations and boycott campaigns against the state of Israel.
