Brawn targets end to team veto power on F1 rules

Formula 1 sporting director Ross Brawn is seeking a new approach to decision making that will stop individual teams from having veto power over rule changes.

Currently, any changes to the regulations during the course of a season have required the unanimous sign-off of all ten teams to be approved. It’s made it difficult for the sport to react rapidly to issues that have arisen.

But Brawn says that will change with the new way of running F1 being introduced for 2021, and that no single team should be able to unilaterally stop changes.

“There’s been an interesting philosophical change in that area, in the new governance,” he explained in an interview with Sky Sports F1 commentator Martin Brundle this weekend.

“In the past, it needed unanimity to change a rule during the year,” he explained. “That meant if you found a loophole – and I put my hands up as someone who has in the past – you could keep that advantage for a year.

“But was that good for Formula 1?” he asked, quickly acknowledging that teams were understandably primarily interested in their own success. “We care what’s good for Formula 1.

“So in the future you won’t require unanimity to change a rule during the year,” he continued, revealing that an 80 per cent majority – eight of the ten teams – would be enough to make changes from 2021.

“One of the crucial things about the governance going forward is we don’t have the situation where we get blocked completely from any change in the future,” he added in comments to RaceFans.net.

“The governance has to be a nicer and better balance of stability for the teams, with the ability to make developments when they’re really essential.”

Brawn acknowledged that he was also keen to see an end to Ferrari’s controversial unique veto on any changes to the sport, but conceded that there had been no firm decision on the matter.

“It’s not 100 per cent certain,” he replied when asked by Brundle whether Ferrari would still have that power in the future.

“I think we want to respect Ferrari and the long history they have in the sport, but I think a veto is a difficult thing.”

Brawn added that his priority in everything he was proposing was to make the sport “as great as possible”.

“We don’t have any other objectives, so our objectives are purely that,” he said. “When it comes to changes that are going to happen in the future, it’s always with those principles in mind.”

Overall, Brawn said he was satisfied with the new direction of F1 that has been outlined in recent weeks, which seeks to rid the sport of the “dreadful” current car designs that discourage close on-track action.

“We wanted to create cars where they can get closer together to race properly,” he told Brundle. “But that won’t happen unless we change the foundation of Formula 1.

“To do that we’ve brought in a budget cap to maximise the amount of money a team can spend. We’ve changed the revenue model so the prize money is distributed more fairly among all the teams.

“We’re looking at all the other elements of creating a racing car – which parts do we have that add very little value to anyone but the engineers who are designing them.

“We have an interesting new area which we call open source, so if you want to make [certain proscribed] parts yourself you put the design on a database so any team can go in and have a look at what you’re using.

“We believe it will make a substantial difference to the cost of the Formula 1 team and also to the competitive differential between the teams. These are areas of small competitive advantage but high cost to achieve that advantage.

“What we want to see is more significant and visible changes ot the cars that the fans can follow, commentators can talk about. Those are the differentials that we should be looking at, not hidden parts which no body knows anything about.

“This is it now. We’ve got a set of regulations I think are very sensible. They’re going in the right direction. Are they perfect? No, we’ll need to work on them.

“But they’re pretty good, and a whole lot better than anything we’ve done in the past.”

Former Pak PM’s Son Bilawal Bhutto Says Imran Khan Is Shielding Terrorists From Indian Jets

Every time when there is an escalation between India and Pakistan following a terror attack by any Pakistan-backed outfits the standard operating procedure in Islamabad (after denying their role) is to take the top leadership of the outfit into house arrest and let them out a few months later after the escalation cools down.

This has been true in the case of Hafiz Saeed, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, Masood Azhar, Syed Salahuddin or any other top terrorists India has named in its dossier following a terrorist attack.

This time too, it was no different – following the Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) terror attack in Pulwama last month which killed over 40 CRPF men, Pakistan played out the same old script – JeM had nothing to do with the terror attack.

Judge Gives Light-Hearted Reply When Asked If Nirav Modi And Vijay Mallya Will Share Same Jail

Fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi’s bail was rejected yesterday for the second time by the Westminster Magistrate Court. Infact, they feared that Modi wasn’t cooperating in the investigation and could fly out. During the hearing, the UK court even shared some light-hearted moments talking about Modi and Mallya sharing the same cell in India.

Westminster Magistrates Court Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot said that she was feeling a sense of “deja vu” because she was the one to have ordered the extradition of Mallya in December last year. The judge even asked which part of India will Modi be put in.

Wild animals, including elephants, often stray into human settlements for a number of reasons including in the quest for food and water, especially in the summers when the water sources in the forests dry up.

But more often than not they get chased away bursting crackers and with fire torches.

Max: Red Bull’s home track not the best for RB12

Max Verstappen says the Red Bull Ring, home of next weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix, is “not the most ideal circuit” for his Renault-powered RB12.

The Dutchman heads to Red Bull’s own track on the back of mature performances in Canada and Azerbaijan, which saw him bounce back from a scruffy Monaco showing to outscore his more experienced team-mate Daniel Ricciardo 16-12.

“I think Montreal and Baku were pretty positive for me,” Verstappen said. “I enjoyed my defence in Canada and was happy with fourth. It was a really good feeling to have Nico behind me and being able to defend my position. In Baku it was a tricky start with a good end.”

The 18-year-old admits this year’s edition of the Austrian Grand Prix will have a different flavour following his promotion to Red Bull’s main team earlier this season. However, Verstappen does not expect the Spielberg venue to play to the strengths of his car.

“In Austria you don’t have so many corners but the elevation changes makes it pretty special, and now driving for Red Bull you feel that even more as it’s our home GP so you feel very welcome by the fans. I think this year there are a few Dutch fans who are coming over so I’m looking forward to it.

“It might not be the most ideal circuit for our car in terms of performance but it’s still very enjoyable. Last year was actually a very good race – I qualified 7th and then eventually finished 8th so it wasn’t too bad.”

How Indians Got Caught In Middle Of The Power Tussle Between Iran And The West

India had no role in the Iran nuclear deal or its aftermath and have good relationships with both sides. But ever since the tension between the two sides escalated, the country has been caught up in the middle of it. That is because both sides have seized oil tankers of the other and both of them have Indians onboard.

It all began with the seizure of Grace 1, an Iran-flagged oil tanker off the coast of Gibraltar, by the British authorities for allegedly violating EU sanctions and shipping oil to Syria, a charge Tehran has denied. It had four Indians crew members who were arrested by the British authorities.

Former F1 racer Piquet Jr secures Le Mans return

Add Nelson Piquet Jr to the list of former F1 drivers set to race at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, with the reigning Formula E champion securing an LMP1 seat at Rebellion Racing.

The Brazilian – the son of triple world champion Nelson Piquet – will partner Nicolas Prost and Nick Heideld, against whom he usually competes in the all-electric series, in the #12 Rebellion R-One LMP1 AER powered car.

As part of his preparations for Le Mans, Piquet Jr will also take part in the 6 Hours of Silverstone and 6 Hours of WEC. The 30-year-old has already raced once at the French endurance classic, claiming fourth in the 2006 GT1 class alongside David Brabham and Antonio Garcia in an Aston Martin DBR9.

“I am thrilled to be joining Rebellion Racing for several races this season including, of course, the Le Mans 24 Hours,” Piquet Jr said upon the announcement.

“That race is one of the most special motorsport events in the world and I loved it so much when I raced there in 2006 that it has been very high on my list ever since to do it again.”

“I couldn’t be happier than to be doing it with such a great team and together with Nico [Prost] and Nick [Heidfeld] as my teammates. I can’t wait to get in the car at Paul Ricard later this month to begin our preparations.”

Piquet Jr’s F1 career only spanned 28 grands prix at Renault in 2008-09, though he did manage to secure one podium finish. His name remains associated with the infamous Crashgate controversy when he deliberately crashed at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix to help team-mate Fernando Alonso win the race.

Since leaving the sport, Piquet has shone in a wide range of series, including NASCAR, Rallycross, and Formula E where he won the inaugural championship last year.
