Bottas defends first corner incident but believes Williams still lack pace

Valtteri Bottas defended his first corner maneuver over Lewis Hamilton at the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Finn enjoyed a blistering launch off the grid to find himself third as the leaders channeled into Turn 1. The Williams driver committed to the inside of Lewis Hamilton who was oblivious of his presence there as Bottas harpooned the side of the Mercedes.

Despite only  superficial damage to his car, Bottas remained on course but was later handed a drive-thru penalty for his tangle with the reigning world champion.

“I committed to brake late into Turn 1,” Bottas explained.

” I saw a gap on the inside 50 metres before the corner and I thought “OK, that’s going to be my spot” but I think Lewis didn’t expect me to come on the inside, so we touched.

“It’s a shame because it cost us a lot today, but even after that the pace was not great. Of course my front wing was damaged and it wasn’t changed – we still need to see why – but the pace was not great and we were just going backwards.”

Obviously, Bottas lamented a penalty which he believed was unfairly applied, while Hamilton himself also labelled the encounter a racing incident.

“Of course I wasn’t happy when I was told about the penalty… I don’t know what to say, really, I need to have a better look at what happened, but I think this kind of thing can happen, going into such a tight Turn 1 like this one, so it was a shame.”

Still, despite the mishap, Bottas acknowledged that his Williams still does not have the proper pace to target a top spot finish.

“We had two new medium compound tyres for the race but we only used one. I used a soft compound tyre for the last stint, one that had only been scrubbed, so it was effectively brand new.

” We need to review our procedures, I think, but I don’t think that’s what cost us today. I think the fundamental thing is that we need to find more pace from the car.”

Gap with Verstappen reflects difference between cars – Sainz

Carlos Sainz will line in P8 tomorrow at the Circuit de Catalunya following a solid performance in qualifying this afternoon.

The junior bull not only outpaced his new team mate Daniil Kvyat, who has yet to completely familiarize himself with his new Ferrari-powered car, but Sainz also succeed in reaching Q3, joining countryman Fernando Alonso for a top 10 start.

“I can be a happy man today because I thought there wasn’t much to gain after Q2,” Sainz explained.

“But I just found a couple of things in sector 1 and 2 and suddenly saw the lap time becoming quicker and I clicked a bit so I could find another 3 or 4 tenths that I wasn’t expecting to find in the car. I’m happy with that.”

While Sainz and former team mate Max Verstappen were previously almost always perfectly matched at Toro Rosso, the Dutchman enjoyed a 0.6s lead in qualifying behind the wheel of his Red Bull.

A gap which most believe, including the Spaniard himself, reflects the performance differential between the two cars.

“I think at the moment at these kinds of tracks the Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari are on a different planet and I feel like I did the second of the normal planet.

“I think Bottas beat us there – I could have expected that no? We know they have something in qualy that we cannot pull out of our pocket and they (Williams) always pull it out.”

In the past, Sainz good qualifying performance has not always been a precursor for a good race the following day. So he’ll be hoping first and foremost for an incident-free Sunday afternoon.

“It was a good qualy but then I had many good qualys in the past but tomorrow we need to focus and execute our strategy properly.

“It’s not going to be easy because the run into Turn1 is really, really long so if you have a good start it doesn’t really matter because with the Mercedes engines behind and in front of us they will come back.

“Then for us to overtake will be very difficult because we know we are one of the slowest, if not the slowest in the speed trap. It’s going to be a tough day tomorrow.”

Hamilton: young F1 drivers need time to develop

Three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has warned that young drivers need time and support to find their footing in Formula One if they’re not to be damaged by the intense pressure of the sport.

Hamilton made his comments after being asked what he thought of the dramatic announcement that Daniil Kvyat was being dropped by Red Bull Racing and returned to his former team, the sister Toro Rosso squad in a swap with Max Verstappen.

“I think it is a good opportunity for one, and for the other unfortunate,” he said. “Red Bull has done well to bring through talent but I think they need to be aware the young drivers need time to progress.

“I just hope for Daniil, they’ve got two fantastic drivers here, that in this manoeuvre is doesn’t hinder either of their careers because they both have bright careers ahead of them.

“Too much pressure, too much stress, too much expectation early on can lead the wrong way,” he added. “There is so much pressure on us as drivers particularly at a young age especially when you’ve not done a lot of years in the lower classes and come in early. There is so much to learn and pressure on the shoulders.

Although it might appear that Verstappen has got the better end of things with the driver swap, Hamilton hinted he wasn’t envious about the Dutch teenager’s new found situation.

“To take a driver out of a team where he is comfortable and into another one it is a difficult position to be in. Do I agree with it? It doesn’t really matter but it’s definitely not something I would particularly do.”

While Kvyat and Verstappen both gained experience with the mid-ranking Toro Rosso team in their rookie seasons, Hamilton himself picked up a race seat at top-ranked McLaren for his maiden season, but admitted that wasn’t necessarily the right way in for everyone.

“I don’t think there’s a clear answer to that,” he said. “For me it worked perfectly going to a big team, but I did a lot more years in the lower categories than some of the others – probably a few more years than the two ahead of me (Kvyat and Verstappen) had.

“They’re going to grow in their own time, some take longer than others,” continued Hamilton. “Some are real quick at learning and some take longer, they need to make more mistakes.

“I remember my first days in the car, and I crashed my first day of driving! It was really difficult those first processes. Of course the team can make a big difference in how they help. It’s just really important not to hold a young driver back.”

Wolff in awe of ‘spectacular’ Verstappen race craft

Toto Wolff has described Max Verstappen’s race craft as “spectacular” following his performance in the British Grand Prix.

Verstappen started from third place at Silverstone and hustled Nico Rosberg in the wet during the opening laps before pulling a breathtaking high-speed move around the outside of the Mercedes driver at Chapel. As the track dried, Rosberg closed back in but Verstappen defended resolutely for a number of laps before eventually being passed at Stowe.

Speaking before Rosberg was demoted behind Verstappen for a breach of radio message regulations, Wolff praised the Red Bull driver’s performance.

“His race craft is spectacular,” Wolff said. “The way he positions the car, you can see that if there’s a good car underneath him he’s able to pull off a great fight. The Red Bull car is generally a good car that functions well under the wet with a lot of drag.”

Verstappen’s pass came on intermediate tyres after the race had started behind the Safety Car. With some drivers commenting on the length of the Safety Car period, Wolff believes the race should have started after a familiarisation lap.

“I think you can argue that at the start of the race it was very wet. There was lots of aquaplaning. Now, do you want to unleash them and see lots of cars spinning off the track?

“My personal looking at it is you can start under Safety Car for lap 2 and then once it was clear that there would be no more showers, the drivers have actually seen everything, it’s up to their judgement. But I’m not the race director.”
