Islanders’ Casey Cizikas will be out 3-4 weeks with leg injury

Casey Cizikas will miss the next three to four weeks after suffering a laceration on his left leg, the Islanders announced Wednesday.

The veteran center sustained the injury in the first period of Tuesday’s 5-3 win over the Flyers at Barclays Center when he collided with Philadelphia defenseman Ivan Provarov and took a blade to the leg. The 28-year-old Cizikas couldn’t put any weight on his left leg. Islanders’ medical staff helped him off the ice and straight to the locker room and did not return.

The Islanders subsequently recalled Cole Bardreau from AHL Bridgeport. Bardreau, 26, made his NHL debut Oct. 10 and recorded his first NHL point Oct. 27 against the Flyers.

Islanders buried by Predators as Craig Smith notches hat trick

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — This was a night to forget for the New York Islanders, who had their modest two-game win streak snapped.

Craig Smith scored three times, Juuse Saros made 31 saves and the Nashville Predators beat the Islanders 5-0 on Thursday night.

Rocco Grimaldi had a goal and an assist and Mattias Ekholm also scored for Nashville, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

Thomas Greiss allowed three goals on eight shots for the Islanders, who had won two in a row, before he was replaced by Semyon Varlamov, who made 16 saves.

Making his fourth start in Nashville’s last five games, Saros recorded his second shutout of the season and ninth of his career.

“It always helps with the rhythm and everything feels more natural playing more, so it’s been good,” Saros said.

It was Smith’s first career hat trick. Before Thursday, Smith had 19 two-goal games, including two this season.

“It was great,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of opportunities to get it, so it was nice.”

Smith scored just 35 seconds into the opening period.

Islanders defenseman Nick Leddy had the puck in the right circle. Smith lifted Leddy’s stick, took the puck and then beat Greiss with a quick wrist shot on the short side just underneath the crossbar.

“We didn’t have a very good start,” Islanders captain Anders Lee said. “We gave them a lot of opportunities and they buried three of them in the first period. We had our chances, but it just wasn’t a good enough effort to get us going in the game tonight.”

Smith got his second at 7:41 of the first.

Behind the New York net, Grimaldi sent a hard pass to Smith in the slot, where he beat Greiss with a wrist shot.

Ekholm chased Greiss when he converted a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle 13:33 into the first.

In the first meeting of the season between the teams Dec. 17 on Long Island, Greiss allowed five goals on 15 shots.

“Our effort and our focus on execution and turnovers were not good tonight,” Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. “I didn’t like our mindset tonight. There’s no way we’re going to win any games with that mindset.”

Grimaldi beat Varlamov 4:41 into the second and Smith completed his first career hat trick at 11:38. Smith got his 16th of the season off a pass from Predators captain Roman Josi.

Listen to Episode 11 of ‘Up In The Blue Seats’: Igor Shesterkin’s Brilliance feat. Mike Richter

It’s a brand-new episode of the “Up In The Blue Seats” podcast with former Rangers great Ron Duguay. This episode has a ton of discussion about Igor Shesterkin and just how brilliant the rookie goalie has been in winning six of his first seven career starts.

Ron and I then get into the future of Henrik Lundqvist in New York. I talk about my encounter with one of Lundqvist’s good friends from Sweden at a bar after Friday’s game. Will King Henrik return for the final year of his contract next season? Will the the future Hall of Famer retire a Ranger or play elsewhere?

NY Post Rangers beat writer Larry Brooks then drops by in his weekly spot to discuss everything going on with the team. He discusses how Shesterkin has cemented himself as the No. 1 goalie and the role Lundqvist has played as a mentor to the rookie. They also talk about the trade deadline and whether Chris Kreider or anybody else will be moved. Could the Rangers become buyers if they win the next few games? Are they in a legit playoff race or are those hopes out the window?

In “Ron Remembers,” Ron looks back at his times hanging out with Andy Warhol. Ron has talked a lot about Warhol getting him on the cover of Interview Magazine and how it led to him meeting Farrah Fawcett and many other celebrities. He looks back at a time roller-blading with Warhol and how Christie Brinkley got involved.

Stanley Cup champion Rangers goalie Mike Richter then joins the show. Richter breaks down Shesterkin’s strong start and how the style of goaltending has changed from when he played. The Rangers great talks about going up against the legendary Martin Brodeur and the Devils in 1994. He also looks back at good and bad memories from the 1994 team under coach Mike Keenan: Keenan could be hard on players, but it made them a better team.

Subscribe to the “Up In The Blue Seats” podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Ron Duguay is joined every Thursday by our Hall of Fame Rangers beat writer Larry Brooks along with special guests.

Devils crash back to earth in ugly loss to Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Devils were starting to get a little momentum recently, but Friday’s loss put a sudden stop to that.

Andrei Svechnikov scored on a perfectly executed rush in the second period to push his point streak to six games and help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New Jersey Devils 5-2.

Mirco Mueller scored in the first period and Joey Anderson added one in the third for the Devils, while Louis Domingue had 26 saves in a losing effort. New Jersey had won three of four coming in, including Thursday’s 4-1 home win against Detroit.

Interim Devils coach Alain Nasreddine said things began to get away in the second period when the team got “disconnected” and “couldn’t get to our game for some reason.”

“We had chances, they really capitalized on their chances,” Nasreddine said. “I think the scoring chances are pretty even … but the problem with us is the scoring chances that we gave up are massive. I know it sounds old now because I’ve been saying it for a while, but we just have to be better.”

Nino Niederreiter and Warren Foegele scored first-period goals for the Hurricanes, helping Carolina play from in front nearly all night as it jostles for wild-card playoff positioning. Martin Necas and Joel Edmundson added two more in the third period for a 5-1 lead, part of a relatively smooth night for the Hurricanes in their return from a four-game road swing.

Wayne Simmonds, big third period propel Devils

One good period and a few well-chosen words from interim…

“We’re in the final stretch here and we’ve got to put together a bunch of wins,” said defenseman Brett Pesce, who had two assists. “That’s the start we needed.”

Petr Mrazek finished with 35 saves for Carolina after losing his previous three starts. He had four stops during an early New Jersey power play and a pair of big saves in the final minutes with the Devils holding a two-man advantage.

Sebastian Aho assisted on Svechnikov’s goal, but was unable to find the back of the net, ending his six-game goal scoring streak.

The Hurricanes entered this game four points back of Philadelphia for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference playoff race with two games in hand. They went ahead for good when Foegele got between the circles and slipped the puck past Domingue at 11:23 of the first.

Then Svechnikov provided the highlight midway through the second. The Hurricanes won a face-off and pushed up ice, with Svechnikov leaving a short drop pass to a trailing Aho along the left boards. He cut toward the crease as Aho zipped the puck cross-ice to Teuvo Teravainen, who sent it right to Svechnikov on the left side for an easy putaway and a 3-1 lead.

“That’s a highlight-reel goal,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “You get those every so often. Youv’e got to be careful that you don’t try to do that too often because … when those plays happen, you want to do it again and again versus just keeping a little simpler and taking the shots. But those guys have a little more, I’d say, leeway on that because they obviously have pretty high skill level.”

Igor Shesterkin officially declared Rangers’ No. 1 goaltender

ST. PAUL, Minn. — There was no backtracking, no coach-speak, no walking around an answer. Instead, David Quinn doubled down on his earlier statement that “keeping people sharp is no longer a high priority of ours,” and unequivocally declared Igor Shesterkin the current No. 1 goalie of the Rangers three-headed netminding monster.

“Yes,” Quinn said when asked if he thinks Shesterkin is the clear-cut No. 1, before he qualified the statement to make it more about this exact moment in time. “Right now, that is the situation we’re in, because of [Shesterkin’s] play, for sure.”

Quinn was forced to turn to Alexandar Georgiev for his team’s 4-3 shootout win over the Wild on Thursday night, as Shesterkin was dealing with a minor ankle injury suffered during the 4-1 win at Winnipeg on Tuesday night. That just happened to be the sixth win in seven career NHL starts for the 24-year-old Russian.

Quinn called Shesterkin “day-to-day,” and didn’t rule him out for the second leg of this road back-to-back, Friday night at Columbus. The Blueshirts also play a Garden matinee Sunday against the powerhouse Bruins.

Henrik Lundqvist backed up yet again. The 37-year-old future Hall of Famer has started just two games since Shesterkin was called up on Jan. 6.

“I think when you get three goalies and you were in the situation we were in, you’re a little bit sensitive to everybody,” Quinn said. “You want to give everybody an opportunity and see how this thing unfolds. I thought everybody had an ample opportunity and everybody had a chance to state their case. I just felt that Igor made the most impact and was in a position to ride him for a little while.”

Shesterkin has lived up to all the hype that surrounded him in Russia, where he was putting up unfathomable numbers in the KHL — which had to be taken with a grain of salt, considering the lack of competitive balance in a league run by cutthroat oligarchs. But he finally came to North America this year and started the season with AHL Hartford, where his dominance continued, despite the smaller rink and different style of play.

The Rangers couldn’t keep him there for too long, so after they returned from their New Year’s trip to western Canada, Shesterkin was called up and the difficult situation of having three goalies on the roster began. Quinn has made it clear the situation is “not ideal,” but the club keeps trudging along with no easy answer in sight.

It was assumed general manager Jeff Gorton was shopping Georgiev, a 24-year-old Bulgarian who hasn’t proven to be a clear-cut No. 1 goalie in his first 69 games in the NHL. Georgiev did have his moments in making 23 saves against the Wild and could very well one day be a team’s top netminder. But with Lundqvist having one more year left on his contract, carrying an $8.5 million salary-cap hit, and with the clout he holds in the locker room — not to mention the fact he is still playing at a very high level — it seemed as if Georgiev was the expendable one.

Henrik Lundqvists Rangers prophecy is on brink of coming true

Regarding the Rangers, who face the perpetually out-of-the-playoffs, top-of-the-draft-selecting Sabres…

That might still be the case, but a trade might be better suited for the summer, with Georgiev set to be a restricted free agent.

In a league in which two goalies mostly sharing the net has become the norm, however, it is not out of the realm of possibility the Rangers will find an amicable solution to part ways with Lundqvist — either asking him to waive his no-trade clause or buying out the final year of his deal, which would create unwanted dead cap space for the next two seasons. Even with his 38th birthday coming on March 2, Lundqvist is still a good goalie and is invaluable to the Rangers.

So is Georgiev, which is why the club is in this position.

“We’ve got confidence in all three of our goalies,” Quinn said.

There is no longer a question, however, as to who is at the top of the pecking order — at least for now and into the foreseeable future.
