Donald Trump stoked his simmering feud with The New York Times at the weekend, accusing the stately newspaper of inventing a source for a story. More fake news, was the gist.

Just one problem: The source was in fact a White House official who conducted a briefing for reporters on condition he not be named, according to both the newspaper and reporters who attended.

Such arrangements are commonplace, allowing aides to fill in details about complex issues without overshadowing the president’s own words on the subject.

It seems no-one told Mr Trump.

In a tweet, he accused the newspaper of quoting an official “who doesn’t exist” as he disputed a line about a possible summit with North Korea, which read: “a senior White House official told reporters that even if the meeting were reinstated, holding it on June 12 would be impossible, given the lack of time and the amount of planning needed.”

Mr Trump was no doubt riled by the comments after he earlier said he thought the on-again-off-again June 12 date could bet met.

A transcript of the event showed a reporter asking why the Thursday briefing was not on the record only to be told that the president and secretary of state had both spoken publicly during the day and that it was designed to provide only “background context”.

Although Mr Trump accused the New York Times of inventing its source, he could perhaps have challenged the newspaper’s interpretation of the words and the conclusion that the June 12 date was "impossible" rather than unlikely.

"I think that the main point, I suppose, is that the ball is in North Korea’s court right now. There’s really not a lot of time," the official said, according to the transcript.

"There’s a certain amount of actual dialogue that needs to take place at the working level with your counterparts to ensure that the agenda is clear in the minds of those two leaders when they sit down to actually meet and talk and negotiate and hopefully make a deal. And June 12 is in 10 minutes."

All the talent and possibilities they have and those are the final two standing? Shows who the bosses want, we get. Sheamus and Reigns. Wow. Couldn’t have booked it worse if they wanted to lose viewers tomorrow night and the foreseeable future as fast as possible.

The matches were mostly entertaining if not especially memorable. The curse of the show was match endings seemingly : the traditional Survivors match (pretty good until New Day walks out, hen… well…), Charlotte/Paige, Ziggler/Breeze & the Reigns/Ambrose final were all marred by it. Only Reigns/Del Rio & Ambrose/Owens built to a satisfying payoff.

The “surprise” Sheamus win makes sense from a story perspective, but I can’t say it makes me interested in future directions, & it didn’t do Roman any favors. For a second it looked like they were doing a double-turn with him & Triple H…

Just thought I would provide some Feedback on Survivor Series. I gave the show a thumbs in the middle, not that bad, good in spots, but not really that great either. Better then a “B” show, but not by much. I would have to say the best match of the night would probably be the Taker/Kane match VS The Wyatts since it was a cool spectacle but mostly just big spots at the right time, and the worst match of the night would have to be the 5 on 5 elimination match during the main show. I missed the elimination match on the pre show.

Roman / Del Rio – I thought this was a pretty good match, my two choices for the winning the title when the tournament began was both of these guys, I think Alberto would be a great heel champ, and I think Roman would have also made for a great heel champ as well, but more on that later. Good win for Roman.

Ambrose / Owens – Was not all that surprised to see Ambrose win, even though I was pulling for Owens since I think he is one of the most talented guys on the roster right now. But they have been building on the friendship between Roman and Dean during the tournament and what would happen if they met in the finals, so I saw the Ambrose win coming. Ah well.

New Day / Sheamus / Barrett VS Lucha Dragons / Usos / Ryback – Match was entertaining and good for comedy because of the New Day, but also got my vote for worst match of the night because it was just a comedic throw away match. It’s hard to watch matches like this where it’s just built around the comedy segments. And I’m a fan of New Day and they have won me over with their comedy spots, but hard to take them seriously as a result and they are tag champs right now so it dilutes the title as a result.

Paige / Charlotte – Not a bad match for the Divas title, was very good in spots and very physical, but have seen better. I think the whole angle with Flair and her late brother really just ruined the match for me, so it was hard for me to get into this match as a result. Although WWE really retracted on the angle they used on Raw and tried to back track and utilize damage control, the match was really ruined in my opinion from that tasteless angle which still has me dumbfounded why they would go that route and mention Reid Flair the way they did. Just bad taste and was not necessary at all to get the match over. But good to see Charlotte retain since Paige is starting to get annoying in my opinion as they are making her character a little too whiney and complaining. Just stick to having good matches and get the ball back rolling on the Divas revolution.

Ziggler / Tyler – Didn’t really care who won this match since the whole feud has really been pointless. But good win for Breeze since it would be dumb to have him lose after just making his main roster debut. However having him with Summer Rae is not doing him any favors. Poor Summer just seems to be the career killer for everyone, lol.

Taker /Kane VS the Wyatt Family – I thought this was a very good match for what it was and who was involved. I knew Taker and Kane couldn’t really do much to carry the match that long in this latter stage of both their careers and the Wyatts would really have to step up and make it look good. I think it would have been better and really a no brainer to have a traditional 5 on 5 elimination match since it would make everyone look that much better, but this seemed to work out just fine too. Really cool entrance by Undertaker, was expecting more in general throughout the night in honor of the Taker since they were celebrating his 25 years since his debut in WWE in 1990 but this match served it’s purpose well. I thought a good angle they could have utilized if they went for a traditional elimination match would be to have mystery surprise partners for Taker and Kane, possibly Sting, Batista, and Brock as his partners would have been awesome. But that’s just me playing fantasy league booker, lol. But good match otherwise.

Roman / Dean – Not sure what to say about this match. I think Roman as a face is going nowhere fast. Evident by crowd starting to boo him. Was hoping Roman would turn heel during the match on Dean and win the title as a heel champion. I think Roman as a heel champion would be awesome. Face Roman not so much. When Roman did win the title, I automatically thought something was up since they still had plenty of time left on the show for something to happen, which I knew would not bode well for Roman. And of course that’s exactly what happened when Triple H came to the ring then Sheamus cashed in and won the title. Kind of lazy in my opinion. And Roman gets screwed out of the title again since WrestleMania. Face Roman is just not going to get over. Heel Roman will make a great champion. But Shemaus as champ? Wasn’t he just in a comedy filler mid match card? Well it was an entertaining show but not the greatest. They can only improve from this point. Go heel Roman!

WWE Survivor Series

Thumbs in the middle: Not that great of a show, it started good but lost steam down the line. Way too many video packages and outside the ring stuff. Between the end of the Ziggler vs Breeze match and the start of the main event there were 37 minutes with just ten of in-ring action for the Taker match, only to do a rushed final.

Best Match: Ambrose vs Owens

Worst Match: Tag Opener

1. Goldust, Neville, O’neill & Dudleys vs Dallas, Miz, Stardust & Ascension. A total throwaway match.

2. Reigns vs ADR. Good opener. Finally Del Rio had a good match. ***1/2

3. Ambrose vs Owens. Very good but these two can be better; given the result, it’s possible they’ll have a feud. ***3/4

4. Ryback, Lucha Dragons & Usos vs. Barrett, Sheamus & New Day. It started good but once the New Day walked away the match died. In fact, they never got the crowd fully back for the rest of the show. **3/4

5. Charlotte vs Paige. They really tried and did some cool spots but the crowd was dead. Maybe it was the New Day walk out effect, the Charlotte’s brother angle effect or that people just don’t care about the divas. Maybe a bit of all. ***

6. Breeze vs Ziggler. Too short to be something. **

7. Taker & Kane vs Wyatt & Harper. They put Harper there to take the bumps. Taker did his thing so it was fine. Hopefully this is the end of their feud. **1/2

8. Reigns vs Ambrose. What they did was good but way too rushed. It was clear that there was an angle coming. ***

9. Sheamus vs Reigns. In 2015 Sheamus is the WWE champion once again. Those title matches vs Ryback (given the result of the tag match) will be great. What’s next, Barrett turning on him? I just hope that this is not an excuse to do the dreaded Sheamus vs Daniel Bryan match at Mania (N/R)

I think they made a big mistake with the succesful cash in. Could sense that was coming for Triple H to sucker him with a handshake and when Reigns is a face who sees right through it, made him stand out. If he was able to beat Sheamus too, I have to think that would have really cemented him. “This guy survived a tourney, hunter, and a cash in? Wow”. Not like they have to protect the briefcase anymore since two people have failed. This would get the case off Sheamus and potentially also allow an opponent for TLC by The Authority sending Sheamus against Reigns. But no, now Reigns is champion for a moment now has to chase *again*. No matter how the storyline spins it most audience members will now see reigns as a guy who blew it *again*

Anyway this was another good event. At this point I forget the last PPV I didnt like. Had technical issues first 10-15 of the preshow, as a lot folks did apparently on Twitter. All three tournament matches were great. Im a sucker for Owens but thought Ambrose-Owens was the weakest of the three just slightly off but still good. Liked both elimination matches, The New Day one more. The trombone moment was priceless especially with Wade. The divas match should have started with Charlotte going balistic and there wasnt enough of that. More stiff than WWE womens matches but just lacking a little. Glad to see Breeze win after the tourney handling.

Think WWE was hoping the crowd would take over singing for Lilian as many other sports teams have done at times like these but they didnt get going.

So TLC will likely be the aforementioned Sheamus-Reigns match and guessing basically they “have” to have Sheamus retain which frankly sucks, makes Reigns keep choking. If theres some title held up or other wackiness its Bryan-Orton/Authority all over again.

Reigns may not be perfect right now but they had the chance to strap a triple rocket to the guy and see what happens ans they went the other way here. Too bad.

Best Match: Roman Reigns vs Alberto Del Rio

Worst match: Goldust, Dudleys, Titus O’Neal and Neville vs Acension, The Miz, Bo Dallas and Stardust

I enjoyed the show as a whole and am glad to have watched it. I am however disappointed in the finishing Money In The Bank angle. WWE had a chance to light a spark tonight with a great match between Reigns and Ambrose if they were given time but they went with booking that wasn’t really for me. I do hope they move toward Reigns winning the title from Sheamus at TLC or Rumble as I don’t see it as a Mania main event but they will probably want The Authority involved no matter what. They really need to move on from the booking of MITB surprise wins as it is played out after ten years. They could keep MITB and just get rid of the rule that it is any time and place.

All that being said the in-ring action was good tonight. The semi-finals were good. Charlotte and Paige had a much better match than I expected and was the best stuff from Charlote since she came to the main roster. I liked the main show elimination match as a showcase for The New Day, Xavier Woods is one of my favorites to watch right now.

I didn’t have a lot of interest in Undertaker and Kane, but did think that Luke Harper made the most of the showcase.

Best match: Ambrose/Owens or Reigns/Del Rio

Worst match: Reigns and Ambrose or that atrocious tag match between BOD and Wyatts.

I don’t know what I expected from this clueless company. The worst part is this show was good until the last two matches. They were both so bad that it just invalidated the rest of the show. If I didn’t enjoy the network as an entity and NXT so much I’d cancel my subscription tonight. I sure as hell have zero interest in watching Raw now. I mean, I was glad Sheamus cashed in but I don’t care about him as a champion, I don’t hate it like I hate Roman Reigns as a champion, but I really don’t care at all.

And I don’t mind Reigns as a worker, I usually enjoy his matches. The match with Del Rio was great. But once he’s in the Cena spot you know WWE is going to write the same shitty stories with Reigns that they do with Cena. That match with Ambrose should have been great, but it was completely devoid of any drama and suspense and the finish was flatter than Pepsi.

I like that guys like Owens, Neville, and Breeze are making main roster money but I selfishly wish they’d just stayed in NXT instead of being on Raw. No wonder Finn Balor says he doesn’t want to be on the main roster. I don’t blame him.

By the way I didn’t think it possible since I loved him as a kid but I absolutely hate the Undertaker now and can’t wait for him to retire already.

Almost gave it a thumbs in the middle due to the ending but I really did enjoy everything else on the show…but they Lex Lugered Reigns, he will never be the guy after this.

Overall: Thumbs up show. Going into the event WWE had two main objectives; crown a new champion and cement a #1 heel. When Sheamus cashed in the briefcase and defeated Reigns, he achieved the objectives and in doing so provided a needed change to the landscape of WWE. All of the tournament matches were meaningful, different and enjoyable. The Undertaker match was pure nostalgic fun. The rest of the card was take it or leave it. I would have left the WWE Divas title match.

Best Match: I would provide a slight edge to Ambrose/Owens over Reigns/Del Rio, though both matches were very good.

Worst Match: The Divas match was long and missable. They tried and failed.

Preshow Survivor Series Match: Neville, Dudley Boys, Titus and Goldust vs. The Ascension, Bo Dallas, Stardust, and The Miz. Entertaining addition to the Survivor Series pre show. I am glad to have Goldust back. The wrestlers looked like they were having a good time at the onset. The crowd was tame for the majority of the match and the heat segment did wane. Nonetheless, it was a crowd pleasing finish with the babyface team getting a strong victory. **

WWE World Championship Semifinal Match: Alberto Del Rio vs. Roman Reigns. Good match. Pedestrian and somewhat clunky beginning with some well timed and unexpected transitions going down the stretch. Crowd was only lukewarm for Reigns, but they appreciated the action and effort in the ring. If the plan is to make Reigns earn the belt with two long and hard fought matches. Step one was successful. ***

WWE World Championship Semifinal Match: Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens. Very good match. They went back and forth to start, settled into some formula heat during the middle, and took it home with an awesome closing sequence. The crowd is interested, but they don’t seem invested in cheering one wrestler and booing the other. ***1/2

WWE Divas Title Match: Charlotte vs. Paige. Disappointing contest. The action was okay at best and the story was inconsistent and difficult to follow. Many contrast the difference in presentation of women in NXT compared to WWE. Not enough emphasis is placed on the disparity of in ring quality between women in NXT and WWE. The fact that the same women who shined in the ring in NXT look confused and uncoordinated in WWE is baffling. *1/2

Tyler Breeze vs. Dolph Ziggler. The action was crisp, the crowd was cold. Call it the crowd, call it the spot on the card, call it whatever you want; the reaction and crowd response was absent. **

Survivor Series Match: Ryback, Lucha Dragons, and The Usos vs. The New Day, Shemus, and King Barrett. Bizarre layout for a heel vs. face Survivor Series match. Up to the point that the New Day left, the action was strong. Once the New Day left, the air was let out of the room. The most unlikeable character in the match, Sheamus, was the most valiant and courageous of the ten. The last five minutes felt like dead air. **

Brother of Destruction vs. Wyatt Family. Fun nostalgia match that served as another enjoyable pit stop on the Undertaker retirement tour. Taker looked good and Kane, Harper, and Wyatt fulfilled their respective roles sufficiently. An angle closing match that ended with an emphatic exclamation point that pleased the live crowd. ***

WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match: Roman Reigns vs. Dean Ambrose. Shorter than expected, but intense and competitive while it lasted. The match ended before they reached the peak, which made the finish less predictable. All of the after the bell shenanigans, from the show of respect, to the confetti, followed by the spear to Triple H, and concluding with the MITB cash in and Sheamus victory were all spot on. **3/4 for the match.

Definitely a THUMBS UP. A solid show all the way around.

Good tournament matches, a good backstage promo by Kevin Owens, a surprisingly good women’s match sans Sasha Banks, and a good surprise to close the show. I *swear* when I saw that confetti, so evocative of Daniel Bryan’s title victory where he immediately lost the belt, I knew that Sheamus would be cashing in. (I was less sure he would win, but I saw the cash in, especially with so much time left.) I’m not sure I understand Reigns being angry with HHH, or how this is going to play out in a way that makes sense. Also, I can’t wait until some heel or wise baby face gets intentionally counted out or disqualified at one of these unfair cash-ins.

BEST MATCH: I honestly think it was Reigns-Del Rio. Del Rio looked great, and worked well with Reigns.

WORST MATCH: Breeze-Ziggler was technically good, but lacked a bit of emotion for me. Still, I do like Prince Pretty. (He needs some work on promos though, as we saw in the Social Media Lounge.)

Italy’s new populist coalition was sworn in on Friday as Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, apologised for remarks suggesting that Italians in the south of the country were work-shy and corrupt.

The swearing-in took place in the Quirinale Palace, once the home of popes but now the residence of Italy’s president, Sergio Mattarella, who clashed with the populists during tortuous negotiations to form an administration after three months of post-election deadlock.

Western Europe’s first populist, Eurosceptic government plans to slash taxes, spend billions on increased social welfare measures and demand the reform of EU rules on budgets and migrants.

Giuseppe Conte, a law professor whom Italians had never heard of until 10 days ago, was sworn in as prime minister, along with 18 ministers, five of them women.

Mr Conte will face a stiff challenge in mediating the competing demands of Luigi Di Maio, the head of the anti-establishment Five Star Movement, and Matteo Salvini, who heads the hard-Right, anti-immigration League.

Mr Di Maio was sworn in as labour and economic development minister, where he hopes to deliver on an electoral promise of providing a €780 monthly income to Italy’s unemployed, as long as they seek work.

Mr Salvini was appointed interior minister, a key position that will enable him to spearhead his pledge to expel up to half a million undocumented migrants who have arrived in recent years from Libya.

He wants to reduce funding for migrant reception centres and steer it towards repatriating migrants whose asylum applications have been turned down.

“Five billion euros to look after migrants that live in Italy and receive breakfast, lunch and dinner is way too much, let’s see if we can cut it,” he said after the swearing-in ceremony.

Asked how long the coalition would last, he said: “At least 10 years”.

Both leaders have been appointed deputy prime minister.

The incoming coalition’s already fractious relationship with Brussels reached new lows when Mr Juncker, the president of the European Commission, said Italy should stop blaming the EU for its economic problems.

“Italians have to take care of the poor regions of Italy. That means more work, less corruption, seriousness,” he said on Thursday, just as the coalition deal was being hammered out.

The remarks prompted an angry rebuke from Mr Salvini.

"Italians corrupt and lazy?" he wrote on Facebook. "Shameful and racist words, with the next government we will see we get the rights and dignity of 60 million Italians respected. (They) expect collaboration, not insults from Europe".

A spokeswoman for the European Commission said Mr Juncker “deeply regrets” the comments, which she said had been interpreted in "a misleading way”.

Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, congratulated Mr Conte on his appointment as prime minister, but said the EU needed "unity and solidarity more than ever".

"Your appointment comes at a crucial time for Italy and the entire European Union," Mr Tusk said in a letter.

Welcome to this morning’s World Tag League coverage, the last show before the finals on 12/9. This card will determine who makes it to the finals.

The show is from the famed Aiichi Gym in Nagoya, a New Japan stronghold for decades.

The A block comes down to this. Kazuchika Okada & Yoshi-Hashi face Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma. Both teams have 3-2 records. Hiroshi Tanahashi & Michael Elgin are in first place with a 4-2 record. If Okada & Yoshi-Hashi win, then Tanahashi & Elgin go to the finals based on having beaten Okada & Yoshi-Hashi earlier. If Makabe & Honma win, which is expected, they go to the finals since they beat Tanahashi & Elgin a few days ago.

The B block has Katsuyori Shibata & Hirooki Goto and Tetsuya Naito & Evil both with 4-1 records. As coincidence would have it, they face off tonight and the winner goes to the finals.

The overall tournament winner is expected to face Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows at Wrestle Kingdom 10 at the Tokyo Dome.

Looks like a full house tonight. Crowd seems reasonably hot even though it’s December and cold buildings in the winter with people bundled up usually means less crowd heat in Japan.

MANABU NAKANISHI & MASCARA DORADA & RYUSUKE TAGUCHI & YOHEI KOMATSU VS. YUJI NAGATA & SHO TANAKA & TIGER MASK & CAPTAIN NEW JAPAN

About what you’d expect. Tiger Mask may have gotten hurt a little as he’s holding his upper chest. More comedy than usual, but when you’ve got Captain in, that’s all you can do. Komatsu and Tanaka were serious and good as usual Tiger Mask made Komatsu submit to a double armbar. Funny spot where Nagata kicked Nakanishi in the chest and he said, “Oh fuck.”

CHRISTOPHER DANIELS & FRANKIE KAZARIAN VS. JAY WHITE & DAVID FINLAY

Decent match. Daniels & Kazarian worked like the veterans and controlled the match, mostly working on Finlay is a solidly worked undercard style match. White made the hot tag, did a few things but fell victim to Celebrity Rehab and Kazarian pinned White.

HIROYOSHI TENZAN & SATOSHI KOJIMA VS. YUJIRO TAKAHASHI & CODY HALL

Yujiro has a woman with 22 inch heels on doing all kinds of splits and almost a strip tease in a small bikini. Kind of weird having this on a show where Maria is a big part of the act coming up later. Better than expected. Crowd was into Kojima & Tenzan’s trademark stuff and Hall has improved. There was a spot wher Tenzan clotheslined Kojima when Takahashi moved and they played up being mad at each other. They teased tension after as well but shook hands. Finish saw Kojima lay out Takahashi with a lariat and Tenzan used the Anaconda buster and Anaconda vise to get a submssion from Hall.

HIROSHI TANAHASHI & MICHAEL ELGIN & KUSHIDA VS. MICHAEL BENNETT & MATT TAVEN & GEDO

Good match, best thing on the hsow so far. The highlight was Elgin giving Taven and Bennett German suplexes building to a spot where he gave both German suplexes at the same time. Tanahashi was playing it safe here. After Kushida did a flip dive wiping out Bennett & Taven, Tanahashi used a Dragon screw and Texas cloverleaf for the submission on Gedo. Maria didn’t do much. One dancing spot to distract Tanahashi and that was about it. Kushida borught a little kid over the rail to meet Tanahashi after.

Intermission time. The rest of the show are four tag team tournament matches, the last two deciding who goes to the finals.

BAD LUCK FALE & TAMA TONGA VS. KAZUSHI SAKURABA & TORU YANO

Tanahashi is on commentary we can’t hear. Nothing at all to this. Short match with the only cool spot being Sakuraba gettingan armbar on Fale out of nowhere. Yano had is ribs all taped and didn’t do anything. Yano gave both guys low blows at the same time and then Sakuraba craled Tonga for the pin. Yujiro Takahashi ame out and took out Sakuraba and then they beat down three-on-one on Yano after, working over his ribs. and putting the boots to him. Then Tonga beat down Sakuraba and threw David Finlay around.

SHINSUKE NAKAMURA & TOMOHIRO ISHII VS. KARL ANDERSON & DOC GALLOWS

The idea here seemed to be to get Anderson & Gallows over since they’re defending the belts at the Dome, so they got to beat a legit team here. They laid out Nakamura with a Magic killer, and then went back and forth with Ishii until using the Magic killer on him for the pin Nakamura didn’t do a lot here but Ishii and Anderson were good. Nobody got their heat back or anything like that. There was a simple goal of the match and they did it

TOGI MAKABE & TOMOAKI HONMA VS. KAZUCHIKA OKADA & YOSHI-HASHI

Makabe & Honma won as they took out Okada, then Honma did a spear head-butt to the back of Yoshi-Hashi as he was getting near falls on Makabe Makabe did a Death Valley bomb on Yoshi-Hashi They did a Road Warriors style double impact but Honma, instead of a clothesline off the top, did a spear head-butt. Makabe then used the King Kong kneedrop off the top rope onto Yoshi-Hashi for the pin. Tanahashi was in tears at ringside, did a better job of selling it than anyone. So Makabe & Honma are in the finals against whoever wins the next match. Match was good, but not nearly as good as it should have been with the stakes. It’s notable they didn’t change from the original plans here.

Best match on the show but not a blow away match but very good. Naito & Evil are going to the finals. A lot of brawling in the crowd. The finish saw Naito tackle the ref so Bushi could blow green mist into Shibata’s face. Evil hit the STO on Shibata. Naito used a low blow and Destino to pin Goto. After the match, they beat down the ref and Bushi blew mist in his eyes.

More than 80 girls’ schools have closed and exams have been postponed after Islamic State militants in eastern Afghanistan said they would bomb them in retaliation for US air strikes.

Thousands of pupils were kept at home in Nangarhar province after the militants declared that "heavy blasts and thunderous attacks will target all those girl schools which disobey this warning".

Broadcasts on their propaganda radio warned officials to close the schools and told parents “not send their daughters to schools to pursue this secular infidel curriculum”.

All girls’ schools and many boys’ schools were closed in the city of Jalalabad and its neighbouring districts.

The eastern province has become a stronghold of the local affiliate of Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (Isil), since local Islamist militants began swearing allegiance to the movement in 2014.

The number of girls in education across the country was long touted as a sign of progress by the international coalition trying to rebuild Afghanistan.

Recent United Nations figures show the number of both boys and girls at school is starting to fall as security worsens.

Hayatullah Hayat, governor of Nangarhar, dismissed the warning by Isil, also known as Daesh, as propaganda.

He said: “Unfortunately, they want to disrupt the people’s understanding [about the prevailing situation] in order to achieve their goals."

Boris Becker’s creditors have been granted more time to pursue his assets, as government officials from the Central African Republic issued conflicting statements as to whether or not the former Wimbledon champion is one of the country’s diplomats.

Becker’s lawyers had claimed he had diplomatic immunity that would protect him from ongoing bankruptcy proceedings due to his recent appointment as the CAR’s Attache for Sports and Cultural Affairs in the European Union.

The CAR foreign minister said on Monday that he had never made the appointment. Charles Armel Doubane said his signature is required in order for a diplomat to be appointed.

“I never signed such documents,” he said. “The President never asked me to take the appropriate steps in the case of Boris Becker.”

However, he was swiftly contradicted by the CAR embassy in Brussels, who said Becker is one of its diplomats and has an office in Brussels to carry out his work as a sporting, cultural and humanitarian attache to the European Union.

CAR President Prof. Faustin Archange Touadera announced the appointment in April

“The Embassy sees no reason to comment on Mr Becker’s private insolvency. It does not affect the sincere efforts of Mr Boris Becker for our country,” the statement said, adding that Becker’s rights are covered by the Vienna Convention: “England has proved repeatedly that it adheres to diplomatic practices in exemplary fashion, respecting all diplomats and their rights.

“This will not be any different in the case of diplomat Becker.”

At a High Court hearing yesterday, Judge Sebastian Prentis said that he had seen a letter from the CAR stating that Becker has been issued with a diplomatic passport that expires in 2023.

Becker was declared bankrupt a year ago and the bankruptcy was due to be discharged today.

Both parties agreed that the discharge should be suspended.

Lawyers acting for the bankruptcy trustees claim that Becker has not provided “full and accurate” information about his assets, naming two properties in Germany, a property in west London, an interest in three Mercedes dealerships and various tennis trophies and memorabilia.

Becker’s barrister, Ben Emmerson QC, said his client may wish to apply for an injunction to block a sale of his trophies, due to be held at the end of July.

In a press release on Sunday, the embassy in Brussels stated that Becker “uses his international connections, especially in sports and culture. The embassy sees no reason to go along with Mr Becker’s private affairs. These do not interfere with Mr Becker’s sincere efforts for our country.”

Eight wrestlers for the top-ranked Gophers are still alive headed into the tournament’s final day, including five that will wrestle in the semifinals.

No. 1 Minnesota finished the first of two days at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas leading the team competition and advancing five wrestlers to tomorrow’s semifinals. As might be expected, the quintet that helped Minnesota rack up 85.5 points, which is 20 ahead of second-place Iowa State, is comprised of the team’s five senior All-Americans, all of whom put on strong performances during the tournament’s opening day.

All five scored bonus points in at least one of their three matches on the day. Three – No. 2 Chris Dardanes (133), No. 1 Dylan Ness (157) and No. 1 Scott Schiller (197) – scored bonus point in each of their three matches. Dardanes strung together a technical fall, a fall and a major decision; Ness began with two pins and then a major decision; and Schiller won three consecutive major decisions. No. 1 Logan Storley (174) opened with a pin and a major decision before outlasting No. 14 Davonte Mahones of Michigan for a 3-1 quarterfinal win in sudden victory overtime. For No. 3 Nick Dardanes (141), a major decision in his second match was sandwiched between a pair of victories by decision.

All 10 Gopher wrestlers won their opening round match, and seven of those won their second match to advance to the quarterfinals. Both Gophers who fell in the quarterfinals fought admirably against higher-seeded opponents. While No. 15 Nick Wanzek (165) fell to No. 7 Lucas Walsh of Indiana, 7-2, in a match without any controversy, the same can’t be said for No. 15 Brett Pfarr and his match with No. 1 Gabe Dean of Cornell. Tied 1-1, the match went to sudden victory overtime. In a scamble during the period’s final seconds, Dean was awarded a takedown but, after stepping aside and discussing what they had seen, the officials overturned that call, advancing the match to tiebreakers. Dean escaped Pfarr during the first tiebreaker, while Pfarr was unable to do the same in the second, dropping the match 2-1. Along with Wanzek and Pfarr, Michael Kroells (285) will wrestle tomorrow on the backside of the bracket with a chance to place in the competition.

The Revival and their “no flips, just fists” attitude is a constant reminder that the old-school aspect of pro wrestling isn’t dead. Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson have competed with the best NXT had to offer and captured the NXT Tag Team Titles two times before being called up to the main roster.
Dash and Dawson’s terrible luck when it comes to injuries has been well documented. For some reason, they can’t catch a break. They’re now a presence on Raw and challenging whoever they can to make some noise for themselves but it just hasn’t been able to translate into that next level push they desperately need.

Their old-school approach to pro wrestling means they studied the greats. Arn and Tully, Ricky and Robert, and Bret and Jim are among people they have honored with many hours of tape watching and note-taking. When it comes to being able to cut a ring in half and draw heat like a classic team few do it better than The Revival.
Bret Hart recently sent his niece, Natalya, a picture of himself in a store holding a battle pack of The Revival. Apparently, Dash and Dawson are The Hitman’s new favorite action figures. This fact made Scott Dawson comment how his life is now complete. It is certainly an awesome compliment to receive, to say the least.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The Augsburg College wrestling team claimed two individual champions and six wrestlers who placed in the top-five at the 2014 St. Cloud State Holiday Inn/Husky Open.

Defending 125-pound national champion Mike Fuenffinger (SR, Hibbing, Minn.), ranked No. 1 nationally in the latest Division III national rankings at 125, went 3-0 in route to claiming the 125 pound championship. He reached the final with 9-0 and 12-2 major decisions and defeated St. Cloud State’s Tim Prescott 9-4 to in the finals for his first individual title of the season.

Matt Hechsel (SR, Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked No. 10 nationally at 197 pounds, also claimed his first individual title of the season. Heschsel reached the final with a first round bye followed by 5-0 and 7-2 decisions. Heschsel secured his title with a 6-4 OT decision over unattached wrestler VJ Giulio.

Eric Hensel (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) went 4-1 to place third at 174 pounds, including claiming a pin of St. Cloud State’s Garret Miller in the third place match.

Chad Bartschenfeld (SR, Amery, Wis.), went 2-2 to place fourth, falling to two St. Cloud State wrestlers.

Will Keeter (SR, Twin Falls, Idaho/Twin Falls HS), ranked No. 10 nationally, claimed a fourth-place finish in a very competitive 140 pound weigh class. Keeter went 4-2 on the afternoon, claiming two pins before falling to Larry Bornstad of St. Cloud State 11-7 to finish fourth.

Marcus Hamer (SO, Kimball, Minn.), went 3-2, claiming three decisions, including a 5-4 decision over unattached Colin Ayers to claim fifth place.

Miles Hammerlund (SO, Delano, Minn./Delano HS) finished fifth at 184, advancing twice by injury default and claiming a 4-3 decision over teammate Sebastian Larson to get into the placing matches.
