LinkIQ: Your Essential Network+Cable Tester

In a 2021 Network Field Report that surveyed more than 350 IT professionals, more than 70% said that network configurations happen daily, several times a week, or weekly. Nearly 50% of respondents also said they spend at least half of their time on reactive network tasks like troubleshooting, mapping, and configuration—leaving little time for strategic technology planning and digital transformation.

With its new version 1.1 software capabilities, LinkIQ is smarter than ever.

Imagine if your IT team could speed up the time it takes to verify changes to the cable plant, ensure that new devices will perform as expected, and troubleshoot common network issues quickly—all without needing to be experts. When it hit the market last year, Fluke Networks’ LinkIQ™ made that a reality in one easy-to-use cable + network tester. And now we’ve made LinkIQ even smarter with the latest version 1.1 software release.

IP Ping Means Even Less Time Troubleshooting

One of the best features of LinkIQ is its ability to receive link layer discovery protocol (LLDP) or Cisco discovery protocol (CDP) from a switch, which allows a switch to discover connected devices and advertise its capabilities. This is ideal for identifying problems at the active equipment from the other end of the link, including which switch the link connects to, the switch’s supported speed and duplex settings, the switch port number, and virtual LAN (VLAN) assigned to the link. You can quickly and easily determine if a network issue is caused by a switch misconfiguration, or if a link was connected to the wrong switch port or assigned to the wrong VLAN—all without having to go back to the closet to check the switch information. If you need to definitively identify the connected switch port, LinkIQ even offers a Blink Port Light feature.

IP Ping expands the LinkIQ’s troubleshooting and connectivity testing capabilities

In version 1.1, we’ve expanded LinkIQ’s troubleshooting capabilities and connectivity testing with IP ping (ICMP echo/reply). When you configure a ping test, LinkIQ can determine if a specific gateway or domain name server (DNS)—on the network or internet—is operating and accessible, which is useful if a device is having trouble reaching a specific address. To check latency, ping also determines the maximum round trip time through the network. To conduct a ping test, you can set up the LinkIQ’s IP address (IPv4 or v6) manually or through Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), a network protocol that enables a server to automatically assign an IP address.

Multiple Language Support

LinkIQ’s user interface now supports 12 languages—English, German, French, Japanese, Spanish, Thai, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, Russian, Italian, Portuguese—to make it even easier for anyone to test, anywhere. The keyboard also supports extended alpha characters and symbols.

Expanded Network Testing

Gesture-based touchscreen interface and clear controls make LinkIQ the easiest tester for qualifying cable performance and verifying connectivity. With version 1.1, you can verify connectivity and response time to key network devices with just a touch: tap the Autotest button, and if LinkIQ recognizes the Remote ID at the other end, it knows you’re testing the cable. No need to understand complicated industry standards and performance parameters or decipher graphs. The cable test shows you what you need to know to make sure your cable passes wire map testing and can support the data rate throughput you need, up to 10 Gb/s—all displayed in an easy-to-read “speedometer” graphic.

If the cable doesn’t pass the wire map test, the graphical display of color-coded conductors makes it very easy to see exactly what went wrong—a short, an open, or a miswiring such as reversed, crossed, or split pairs. If the cabling is shielded, it will also show whether you’ve got continuity of the shield. The clear speed-dial graphic below the wire map makes it easy to see if the cable supports the data rate you chose, from 10 Mb/s to 10 Gb/s. And while you might not know (or need to know) all the ins and outs of testing performance parameters, LinkIQ will tell you what caused the failure—length, wire map, insertion loss, return loss, near-end cross talk, or delay skew—in case you need to delve further.

More Confidence in PoE Testing

LinkIQ 1.1 gives you even greater peace of mind in PoE testing by showing you the actual negotiated PoE class (0-8) and wattage available for a powered device (PD) that occurs at both the hardware and software levels, ensuring a device can both connect to the network and allow for dynamic allocation of power from the power sourcing equipment, such a PoE switch. LinkIQ goes further by simulating the load that the PD will place on the circuit, confirming that the power and voltage are there.

And LinkIQ is now certified by the Ethernet Alliance. This means that LinkIQ has been put through a series of rigorous lab tests to ensure it is fully compliant with every requirement of IEEE 802.3 PoE standards and will work properly with all IEEE-compliant devices. It joins Fluke Networks’ MicroScanner™ PoE as the only EA-certified PoE field testers.

And More

LinkIQ can generate analog or digital tones for use with Fluke Networks’ IntelliTone™ Probe or Pro3000™ Tone and Probe, allowing you to trace cables or detect cable faults (opens, shorts, and reversed pairs) in a wall or telecommunications room.

And with today’s increasingly complex networks where documentation is vital, LinkIQ can store up to 1,000 test results with descriptive names that can be numerically incremented automatically to save time when testing in sequence. Then LinkIQ can export the data to Fluke Networks’ LinkWare™ PC cable test management software, which ensures that everything works together, from storing and managing results to generating PDF reports.

Just when you thought we couldn’t make cable and network testing easier, we’ve boosted our LinkIQ with the Version 1.1. software release. Current owners can download the update here. The LinkIQ Cable+Network Tester with the new 1.1 software is available online or from Fluke Networks resellers worldwide. Questions? Contact us!

UI vs UX Design – Difference, Definitions, and Tasks of Designers

peptides for research purposes

Behind the success of a digital product are many people handling design, analytics, programming, and testing. Today we’ll take a closer look at one of the first steps in creating a digital product, which is UX and UI design. At this stage, the work mainly focuses on the client’s business goals and ensuring that the product develops in line with current trends. What’s the difference between User Interface and User Experience design?

What is UI design?

User Interface design is about designing all graphic elements, regardless of whether it’s for a website, a device control program, or a mobile application. UI design covers icons, widgets, modals, buttons, the look of the navigation, and all the elements that allow us to move around a user interface. The designer uses these elements to build a graphically consistent product.

The graphic consistency of any digital product is essential for several reasons. The first and most obvious one is the visual appeal of our product. However, not everything is about looks. The product must have a set of unchanging rules that determine how the buttons work, what animations the clients will see when they hover over a given element, or what icon they will click on. To sum up, User Interface design is about designing all the elements with which the user comes into direct contact.

The tasks of UI designer

Many people would say that it isn’t very complicated to design a few rectangles and arrange some photos. It’s hard to disagree with it from a technical point of view, but building a well-functioning and aesthetically pleasing interface requires having specialist knowledge in addition to a sense of style.

UI designers not only take care of the proper use of logos and typography, but they also make sure that the design is consistent with how the whole brand wants to present itself. For the product to be well-prepared and meet all business goals, user interface designers work closely with UX designers. Through their work, they “enliven” the interface in terms of graphics and create final graphic designs that are forwarded to developers.

As the work of UI designers forms the creative part of building a product, they can introduce innovative and unconventional ways of displaying information and interactions between the user and the product they create. Their work also includes creating micro animations, which are small animations for graphic elements, increasing their attractiveness and helping users navigate them.

What is UX design?

User Experience design is one of the most important elements in the process of creating a new product. UX designers take part in the initial phase of product design. They are responsible for defining goals, not only for the user but also for the business.

Designers define problems and hypotheses, observe users and take into account all the business goals of the client in order to design the best possible product, taking care to meet the expectations of the group which this product is aimed at.

The common mission of UX design is to serve the user and make digital products improve the quality of life for people all over the world.

What does a UX designer do?

In the first stage, UX designer deals with the analysis of the data that they receive from the client or order for the project. It’s also common to analyze the data from Google Analytics, which help to define who the target group visiting a given website is. This is very important because we’ll think differently about a product for middle-aged men and when our target group is young women. The data provide answers to many basic questions that allow proceeding with the project further.

UX designers very often also conduct design workshops with clients, which are invaluable in defining the goals and functions that a given product or website is to achieve. These are several-hour-long meetings with representatives of various departments of the company, during which exercises are conducted aimed at learning about the strengths and weaknesses of the project, its requirements, and business goals. The facilitator, which is the person conducting such workshops, doesn’t participate in them, but only leads the group in such a way that they develop the best model of functioning for their product.

Based on quantitative data (if the client has such data) and workshops, the UX designer makes further decisions about the next stages of research. There’s a lot of research to be conducted, and choosing its direction depends on the budget, the time that the UX designer can devote to it, and the specific nature of the industry in which they are currently operating. One of the tests is to invite several users and give them goals to achieve so that they have to go through a given application. During this time, the UX designer takes a closer look at the users and checks whether all the goals set by the client are achieved, or whether some elements require additional consideration and processing.

When all the necessary data is collected, the UX designer designs product mock-ups, which are initial screens with application features, but not representing the final design. Such screens focus on the layout, choosing the right style of buttons in a given area, and establishing the data hierarchy. Thus, the designer focuses on correctly guiding the user through the product, so that all previously set goals are achieved.

When creating a given product or website, the work on them is never really finished. If the client launches any type of digital product on the market, they must be aware that the design trends, device technology, and user behavior are constantly changing. Therefore, UX designers monitor and study user behavior within a “living organism.” One method is connecting user behavior monitoring programs. With these, you can later define problems and make the changes that’ll improve usability. Thanks to this, you can easily react to changes in the market and continue product development. This method is also more cost-efficient than simply leaving the product to fend for itself for three or four years. Otherwise, you’ll most likely have to design it from scratch.

What’s the difference between UI and UX?

We’ve already covered UI and UX design, but what are the differences between these areas? User Interface is the visual side of the design, while User Experience focuses on the user’s journey and on the product’s usability. UX design comes first because it’s at this level that the most important questions are answered, such as who the potential clients are, what their problems are, and how to solve them.

Source: FullStory

UX designer involvement in the process of changes to the website or application is invaluable at every stage of its development. Sometimes there’s no UI stage at all. Not all design tasks require the involvement of an interface designer. It may be enough to make changes that can be introduced using the existing design system – a document with a set of all principles and rules for using a given user interface.

UI vs UX – summary

A very frequently asked question is whether the UI is part of the UX. When UI designers think about the usefulness of their design, choose the colors so that the most important elements are clearly visible, and the typography is pleasing to the eye, in a sense they also think about UX. However, while the user interface may seem very aesthetically pleasing, it doesn’t always do the job right. Therefore, UX designers work closely with UI designers. When a team or a person with knowledge in both of these areas works on the tasks, you can be sure that your product will be well-designed aesthetically, functional, and will meet the business goals.

Scanning performance of air bearings

Stefan Vorndran • PI (Physik Instrumente) L.P.

Air bearings are common in scanning applications. Scanning involves moving either a work-piece or an optic at a constant velocity, while a reading or writing operation takes place. Such operations include printing and image-setting (writing) and imaging (reading). While the physical act of writing an image or capturing an image differ by application and industry, all such applications share a common requirement – maintaining a constant velocity.

In most applications, the image capture or creation operation takes place at a constant frequency, such as frames per second in a camera. As the optic and workpiece move relative to each other, the spatial separation between each frame must be constant in order not to distort or blur the image. This means that the relative velocity between the two must remain constant.

We will discuss several aspects of scanning performance – how it is specified and measured, what performance level is achievable, what can impact the performance, and why air bearings provide superior scanning performance.

Defining Scanning Performance

The two most common methods of defining and specifying scanning performance are based on either velocity or position. A velocity-based specification is often defined as a percentage error at a specific velocity. For example: 200 mm/ sec scan speed, 0.01% error.

A position-based specification is described in terms of position error at any point in time, also called following error. It means that the stage position cannot deviate from the planned motion trajectory by more than the error window during the entire scan. For example: 200 mm scan distance, 200 mm/sec scan speed, +-0.1 micron following error.

Following error is a common term in the servo-controls domain. It is a general term used to define the position error between the commanded trajectory and the actual trajectory. In this article, we use the term in this way, but in the specific case of errors seen during the constant velocity scan move. We ignore the following errors seen during a contoured move, where trajectory changes, and therefore accelerations, are commanded by the controller.

A number of manufacturers prefer to use the position-based specification for scanning performance, as the errors are more directly measured using laser interferometry tools.

Air bearings for increased scanning performance

Air bearings perform well when compared to other options for one main reason: air bearings have no friction. An air bearing has no physical contact between moving parts and oats on a cushion of air. Therefore, air bearings do not need to overcome static friction in order to produce motion, and do not need to overcome dynamic friction to maintain motion. With the minor exception of drag forces created by aerodynamic drag from the surrounding atmosphere and viscous drag created by the shearing of the air bearing film, an air bearing system behaves exactly as Newton’s three laws of motion predict.

Mechanical bearings still have to contend with friction and noise. All mechanical bearings exhibit some level of static and dynamic friction that must be overcome by the drive and control system. Friction levels can change with temperature, lubrication, preload, speed, payload and wear. This makes friction behave in unpredictable and non-linear ways.

Further, the friction levels can vary widely from unit to unit. Mechanical bearings, especially those with reciprocal elements, also suffer from noise. As rolling elements (balls or rollers) exit the bearing groove, recirculate in their carrier, and then re-enter the bearing groove, audible noise can be heard. This noise varies with speed, and affects the motion pro le. Both friction and noise make it impossible for the servo- controls to maintain ideal scanning performance.

Frictionless Motors

Air bearing stages designed for scanning can be driven by a direct-drive linear motor. Linear motors, like air bearings, have no contacting moving parts, and therefore do not suffer from noise and friction issues. Traditional mechanical drive mechanisms, such as screws, worms, belts, and gears, all suffer from the same weaknesses as mechanical bearings: friction and noise. By coupling non-contact air bearings with non-contact linear motors, air bearing stages create friction-free motion perfect for scanning.

Other Impacts on Scanning Performance

Not all air bearing motion systems are created equal. Yes, the use of an air bearing and linear motor are necessary to scanning, but other design decisions will impact system performance as well. These factors must be considered and tradeoffs made during system design to determine how to best meet scanning performance specifications. These factors include: payload; system stiffness; motor design; encoder selection, resolution, and signal type; servo-controls and drives selection; cable track design; electrical noise isolation and wiring design; and vibration isolation and control.

Scanning performance levels

The level of achievable scanning performance will vary from system to system. However, the following is performance data captured from PIglide air bearing stages. This set of data is taken from a model A-110

This set of data is taken from a model A-110 PIglide LC linear air bearing stage with a 2μm incremental optical sine/cosine analog encoder with a glass scale. This encoder was chosen for its signal-to-noise quality. The stage is operated with an ACS SPiiPlus EC motion controller. Following
errors are below +-20 nanome- ters at a scan speed of 2 mm/sec.
Over a small window of 20μm of travel, the following error is below
+-10 nanometers.

This set of data is taken from a model A-322 PIglide HS Planar XY air bearing stage with absolute optical encoder, 1nm
BISS output, and steel scale. The stage is operated with an ACS SPiiPlus EC motion controller. Following errors are below +-25 nanometers at a scan speed of 20 mm/sec, and below +-100 nanometers at a scan speed of 250 mm/sec.

It can be seen that following error does increase with scanning speed, but not at the same rate. In the plots above, the speed is increased 12.5x while the following error only increased 4x. Performance levels, such as this, are simply not possible with mechanical bearing technologies.

Shawn Mendes Says He Doesn’t Wash His Face, and Fans Are Freaking

MDC Connector

We all know that one person who claims to never think about skin care, goes to bed with makeup on, and has never even heard of a serum, yet still has perfect skin. Apparently, among his group of friends, Shawn Mendes is that person — and skin-care lovers are not having it.

As BuzzFeed reports, during an interview, in response to a question about his skin-care routine, Mendes said, "I'm not lying when I tell you guys that I don't wash my face! I meditate a lot. I think skin is very based on how you're feeling. You could rub dirt on your face, and if you're happy, you won't break out!" I guess that's what happens when you're a pop star who's never seen a pack of Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes at the cash register.

In the words of Kris Jenner, this is a case for the American Academy of Dermatology. Mendes isn't totally wrong; stress and other emotional factors can affect how your skin looks. Still, we wouldn't be doing our job if we didn't remind you not to rub dirt on your face. (Unless we're talking clay masks.)

Naturally, Mendes' fans are losing their minds over the thought of the singer moving through life without so much as a single face wipe. A few of the reactions are literally just screaming at him to wash his face:
