FP1 saw Mercedes set the pace on the supersoft tyre with Nico Rosberg three quarters of a second clear of team-mate Lewis Hamilton, with the triple world champion spinning in low grip conditions. The gap to Ferrari was over a second but neither Sebastian Vettel nor Kimi Raikkonen ran the supersoft compound.

Vettel did struggle with the conditions early on, however, with the German spinning twice – once at Turn 15 and again at the penultimate corner. Jenson Button, Daniil Kvyat and Jolyon Palmer also spun in the opening session as grip levels were low at the start of the race weekend.

Red Bull ran its Aeroscreen cockpit protection concept during Daniel Ricciardo’s installation lap to test visibility, with the Australian later going on to set the sixth fastest time behind Felipe Massa.
It is just over six months since Formula 1 was last racing in Russia, with the grand prix taking an earlier slot on the calendar this season having been the 17th race in 2015.
