LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Katie Yudin (Liverpool HS / Liverpool, N.Y.), Sam Berghoff (Whitney Young / Chicago, Ill.), Reagan Watkins (Loveless Academic Magnet Program / Montgomery, Ala.), Katelyn Boles (Pollok Central / Pollok, Texas) and Cassidy Young (Paradise Honors / Surprise, Az.) were named the MaxPreps/NFCA National High School Players of the Week, respectively, announced on Monday for games played April 6-12.
East
In four games for the Warriors, Yudin was nearly perfect at the dish going 13-for-14 (.929) and also went 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA in the circle. She recorded two doubles, two triples a 1.357 slugging percentage and .933 on base percentage. Yudin, a junior, registered four multiple-hit contests, including two 4-for-4 outings against Carlisle County (2B, RBI, R) and Ballard Memorial (2B, 3B, 3R). She also went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI against North. In the circle, she earned a pair of complete-game victories, including a one-hitter (1 R, 0 ER) with seven strikeouts against Carlisle. Yudin also struck out six and allowed an earned run on four hits in the six-inning victory over Ballard.
North
Berghoff, a senior captain, also put in a near perfect performance last week for the Dolphins. She was 9-for-10, reached base safely in 13-of-14 plate appearances (.929 OBP) and slugged an astronomical 2.100 with two doubles, two triples and two long balls. She also scored 11 out of the 13 times she reached base and knocked in eight runs. In a doubleheader against Tri County Area, Berghoff was 6-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, six RBI and nine runs scored. She scored a five times and recorded four RBI in the opener. Against Andrew, she doubled twice, homered, scored twice and knocked in two runs.
South
Watkins was 5-0 with 33 strikeouts and did not allow a run in five appearances (17 IP) and also .600 (9-for-15) with four doubles, a homer and 14 RBI for the Golden Tigers. She opened the week with a two-hit shutout of Elmore County in which struck out 12 and did not issue a walk. Over the course of her other four appearances (11 IP), she allowed just two hits, struck out 21 and walked five. Watkins finished the week with her opponents batting just .073 against her. At the plate, she went 3-for-4 with a double, home runs, five RBI and two runs scored versus Elmore Country. Watkins also knocked in three runs in wins over Charles Henderson and Zion Chapel.
South Central
Boles, a senior right-hander, tossed a perfect game last week for the Bulldogs and finished the week 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 13 innings of work. In the perfect game, she struck out eight Newton High School batters as Pollok went on to twin 14-0. Boles continued her dominance and was the hero on Friday against Garrison. She twirled a two-hit complete-game shutout and hit the walk-off two-run home run in a 2-0 eight-inning victory, Boles allowed just two singles, struck out 13 and did not walk or hit a batter to help the Bulldogs improve to 18-5.
West
Young batted .714 (10-for-14) and slugged a whopping 1.643 with 14 RBI, 10 runs scored and a .867 on base percentage to lead Paradise Honors to a 3-0 week. The sophomore captain recorded three doubles, two triples and two home runs. She knocked in a season-high seven runs by going 4-for-5 with a double and home run against Tempe Prep. Young homered, doubled, knocked in three and scored three times versus Chandler Prep. She capped off her dominant weekend by going 4-for-4 with a double, two triples and four RBI against Ajo.
