San Salvador, El Salvador — A strong earthquake hit off the coast of El Salvador early Thursday, sending frightened residents running out of their homes in the predawn hours. Authorities said a small tsunami was possible, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.
“Monitoring of the entire country reflects that there has not been grave or widespread damage,” El Salvador’s Civil Defense agency said. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.6. Its epicenter was about 17 miles south-southeast of La Libertad, a suburb of the regional capital, Santa Tecla, and it was recorded at a depth of 40 miles.
Via Twitter, El Salvador’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources warned people to stay away from the Pacific Ocean for several hours. The ministry said sea-level rises of up to about 11 inches were possible along the length of El Salvador’s coast. It reported that seven aftershocks of between magnitude 4.1 and 5.0 were recorded. The earthquake was felt strongly in the capital, San Salvador. People left their homes with flashlights, and power was knocked out in at least some areas.Firefighters said they were monitoring various areas but did not report any damage or injuries. Opposition to President Donald Trump’s Saudi Arabia policy and use of executive power is building in Congress, where senators have introduced more legislation aimed at blocking the sale of weapons to the kingdom.
Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, a Democrat, and Sen. Todd Young of Indiana, a Republican, said in a statement Sunday they hope to force a vote on U.S. security assistance to Saudi Arabia, including arms sales, after a review of the kingdom’s human rights record.Anger has been mounting in Congress for months over the Trump administration’s close ties to the Saudis, fueled by high civilian casualties in the Saudi-led war in Yemen — a military campaign the U.S. is assisting — and the killing of U.S.-based columnist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi agents. Tensions were further inflamed when Trump used an emergency declaration in May to sell the kingdom weapons that Congress had previously placed on hold.
The bill the senators are introducing Monday draws on a provision in the Foreign Assistance Act that allows for congressional review. The act allows Congress to vote to request information about a country’s human rights practices. After receiving the information, Congress can then vote on ending or restricting security assistance.”Congress needs to change how we do business with the Kingdom. The process we are setting in motion will allow Congress to weigh in on the totality of our security relationship with Saudi Arabia, not just one arms sale, and restore Congress’s role in foreign policy making,” Murphy said in a statement. This move follows the introduction of 22 bipartisan resolutions on Wednesday that aim to block the $8.1 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates that bypassed congressional review last month.”Our arms sales to Saudi Arabia demand Congressional oversight. This bipartisan resolution simply asks the Secretary of State to report on some basic questions before moving forward with them,” said Young, who like Murphy has long been an opponent of U.S. involvement in the war in Yemen.Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the sales were necessary to counter “the malign influence of the government of Iran throughout the Middle East region.” Citing unspecified intelligence, U.S. officials have said the threat from Iran has increased in recent weeks. Some of the weapons could be delivered to Saudi Arabia later this year, while other arms will not ship for another year or more. The sale includes precision guided munitions, other bombs and ammunition and aircraft maintenance support. It is unclear if Murphy and Young’s resolution would pass the Republican-controlled Senate before moving on to the House.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren visited the nation’s largest center for detaining immigrant children on Wednesday morning. Other candidates including Amy Klobuchar, Julian Castro, Kirsten Gillibrand and Kamala Harris said they are planning to visit the center in Homestead, Florida.
Miami Herald reporter Monique O. Madan joined CBSN’s “Local Matters” on Wednesday and gave an in-depth account of the conditions migrant children face at the South Florida detention center. “You have people from all over the country coming down and camping out in front of the center,” Madan told CBSN. “There have been dozens and dozens and hundreds of people that have come to say ‘We don’t want this.’ We don’t want what they are calling ‘a prison for children in our own backyard.'”
Homestead is not licensed by Florida authorities for child care because it is on federal land, and is not subject to state inspections. Madan told CBS the facility is run by a for-profit company that has overseen deplorable living conditions for the migrant children. “What we have learned over the course of a month or two, detailed in court records over the last month, is that conditions inside—kid’s are cutting themselves,” Madan said. “They can’t hug each other, they’re crying themselves to sleep, they feel alone, they don’t have the resources, they have two calls a week to their parents, if they answer the phone.” In recent months, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has been warning that it is running out of bed space and funds to properly take care of migrant children. The agency is asking for $2.88 billion in emergency funding to increase capacity in children shelters.A tragic image from the southern border revealed the grim reality facing many Central American migrants who make the dangerous journey. The photo shows a young father and his daughter who died trying to cross the Rio Grande in south Texas. They were found in shallow water, a few hundred yards from where they tried to cross. This follows outrage over U.S. officials returning more than 100 migrant children to a facility where they reportedly lived in inhumane conditions.”It’s a powerful image illustrating what’s happening at the border and what people are going through,” Madan told CBSN. “They’re losing their lives to get here—if they do make it, they’re separated from their children.”Madan added, “From what I was told earlier this morning at Homestead, it’s either you die trying to get here or you’re separated from your kids. Which one is worse?” Last week, President Trump announced immigration officials will be removing “millions” of illegal immigrants in raids throughout the country. Madan discussed the psychological effects the planned raids have had on South Florida communities.
“What we do know is people are trying to hide in their homes, trying to get in contact with attorneys, they’re learning their rights,” Madan said. “They’re afraid. I’ve spoken to people to people who have sold their stuff, their cars because they’re afraid. People are trying to figure out, ‘OK, if I’m deported, what’s going to happen to my children, my U.S. citizen children?'””That’s the atmosphere here in South Florida: it’s fear,” she said. “There’s a lot of fear.”
