F1’s new era underlines driver talent – Abiteboul

Renault’s Cyril Abiteboul believes Formula 1’s faster new-spec cars are highlighting drivers’ skills and their contribution to performance this season.

The faster, wider and physically demanding 2017 cars do indeed not only showcase a driver’s talent but also in some cases the stark difference between team mates.

“The contrast between the drivers is striking,” Abiteboul told French news agency AFP.

“It highlights the important role played by the driver in a sport where technology is central. It is not just about the engine and the car — much is determined by the driver.

“So first of all there is this competition between drivers and Nico (Hulkenberg) eminds us of that.”

At Renault, Hulkenberg has raced clear of team mate Jolyon Palmer since the season got underway, putting the Brit under pressure to deliver a result or risk being dropped by the Enstone-based team.

Abiteboul  on the other hand has stressed the importance of Hulkenberg’s contribution

“Nico has an unusual role in the team,” said the Renault Sport F1 boss.

“He gives us the direction for development, and the priorities for changes to the car.

“We know what to do, but he helps us to highlight the key points and show what is more and less important.”
