As noted, Elias has been removed from the King of the Ring tournament after suffering what is believed to be an ankle injury. WWE has now confirmed that Shane McMahon will take his place in the semifinal round match, facing Chad Gable. The winner will advance to WWE Clash of Champions this Sunday to face Baron Corbin in the finals.
PWInsider.com is reporting that the call to run with Shane McMahon as a replacement was made by Vince McMahon earlier today. There was at one point a pitch made to have a battle royale take place on Smackdown Live, with the winner taking Elias’ place in the tournament, but the call was ultimately made to have Shane take the spot instead.
